Chương 7

She looked at the screen.

The listing belonged to a legitimate real estate company.

The price was different.

The contact information was different.

Most importantly, the property was not available.

It had been sold months earlier.

"How did Michael get the pictures?" Mark asked.

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

He did not create the dream.

He borrowed someone else's.

Deputy Reeves took a picture of the screen.

"This is important."

Clara looked at him.

"Can we get him?"

Reeves did not make promises.

"We can try."

The answer was honest.

It was also frustrating.

Clara turned away.

The sun was beginning to lower.

The afternoon they had planned around swimming and dinner had become an investigation.

A few beachgoers walked past the property without noticing anything unusual.

One woman carried a towel over her shoulder.

A man dragged a cooler behind him.

Life continued around them.

Clara found herself envying strangers who had nothing to do with her disaster.

Rachel quietly picked up her phone.

"I should give you the recording."

Clara looked at her.

"Why didn't you earlier?"

Rachel swallowed.

"Because I was scared."

"Of what?"

Rachel looked down.

"That you would think I was involved."

The answer surprised Clara.

She had been so focused on her own humiliation that she had not considered anyone else's fear.

"Rachel."

"I know it sounds stupid."

"It doesn't."

Rachel looked at her.

"I saw you so excited.

You were happier than I had seen you in years.

I didn't want to be the person who ruined that."

Clara felt something shift.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But understanding.

Everyone around her had been reacting to the same thing.

The image of a perfect weekend collapsing.

The difference was that Clara had been standing in the center of it.

Deputy Reeves walked toward the porch.

"I need everyone to write down everything they remember while it's fresh."

Clara looked at him.

"Everyone?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because memories change."

He glanced at the group.

"Especially when people are stressed."

Nobody argued.

They moved slowly back toward the porch.

Not into the house.

Not yet.

They sat outside with their phones and pieces of paper.

The beach house remained behind them, silent and closed.

Clara looked at the door.

For the first time, she wondered who had stood there before her.

Who had taken those pictures.

Who had prepared the messages.

Who had built a fake future and handed it to her.

And somewhere beyond the shoreline, someone who knew her name was waiting to see whether she would disappear quietly or start looking for the truth.

And somewhere beyond the shoreline, someone who knew her name was waiting to see whether she would disappear quietly or start looking for the truth.

Clara wrote that sentence down in her notes without realizing she had done it.

Not those exact words.

Just the facts.

A person named Michael Foster contacted her.

A person named Michael Foster knew details about her trip.

A person named Michael Foster appeared to have information about the property that nobody else should have had.

She stared at the list.

Facts felt safer than feelings.

For most of her life, Clara had survived difficult moments by organizing them.

When her marriage ended, she created folders.

When her father became sick, she created schedules.

When her business department went through layoffs, she created plans before anyone else knew what was happening.

She did not always solve problems.

But she made them smaller.

This problem refused to become smaller.

Deputy Reeves collected everyone's notes after they finished.

He read quietly.

Nobody spoke while he reviewed the pages.

Mark sat beside Clara but did not touch her.

Thomas leaned back in the chair with his arms folded.

Rachel watched the road.

Everyone seemed afraid of saying the wrong thing.

Finally, Reeves looked up.

"Some things stand out."

Clara waited.

"First, Michael knew information he should not have had unless he had access to your personal details."

She nodded.

"Second, the person who created the fake listing appears to have used real property information."

"So he copied it."

"Possibly."

"Why?"

Reeves looked at her.

"Because real information makes fake things easier to believe."

The answer was simple.

That was why it worked.

Michael had not invented a fantasy.

He had taken reality and changed one important part.

Ownership.

Clara looked toward the house.

"He knew I would believe it because it looked real."

"Yes."

The confirmation hurt.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it meant she was not just unlucky.

She had been targeted by someone who understood how people made decisions.

"What happens to the money?" she asked.

Reeves was quiet for a moment.

"We need to trace it."

"Can you?"

"We can try."

Again.

That phrase.

Try.

She hated how many things in life depended on that word.

Her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Clara looked down.

The name on the screen made her stomach drop.

Emily.

She let it ring once.

Twice.

On the third ring, she answered.

"Hi."

Her daughter's voice immediately changed.

"Mom?"

Clara closed her eyes.

Emily knew.

She could always tell.

Even from thousands of miles away, she could hear when Clara was pretending.

"What happened?"

Clara looked at Thomas.

He looked away.

The guilt was enough of an answer.

"You told her?" Clara whispered.

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

Emily heard.

"Told me what?"

Clara stood and walked a few steps away.

She did not want everyone watching.

She did not want her daughter to hear the ocean behind her and imagine the disaster attached to it.

"I had a problem with the house."

"What kind of problem?"

Clara looked at the beach.

"I may have been scammed."

Silence.

Not a dramatic silence.

A real one.

The kind where someone on the other end is trying to place new information into an old understanding of the world.

"Mom."

"I know."

"No, I don't think you do."

May you like

The sharpness in Emily's voice surprised her.

"You bought a house without seeing it?"
