Chương 3
Jenna felt her fingers tighten around the paper.
Eleanor’s words were not just a message.
They were a final reminder that someone had always believed in her.
Her mother wiped a small tear from her face but quickly turned away.
Richard looked uncomfortable.
Lauren stood completely still.
Jenna continued reading.
“I left this house to Jenna because she was the only person who cared about preserving what this home represented.”
“Not the walls.”
“Not the money.”
“Not the status.”
“The memories.”
Lauren shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“She always said this house belonged to the family.”
Rebecca looked at her.
“She did.”
“But she also knew what happens when people confuse ownership with love.”
Lauren’s eyes moved toward the empty wine bottle.
For the first time, she seemed to understand how everything looked from the outside.
Jenna folded the letter slowly.
“I never wanted this.”
Richard looked at her.
“Then why keep fighting for it?”
Jenna answered without hesitation.
“Because Grandma asked me to protect it.”
She looked around the room.
“And because I wanted to believe my family would choose each other over a piece of property.”
Nobody answered.
The sound of a car engine outside faded into the distance.
The night became quiet again.
Rebecca picked up another envelope.
“There is one more thing Eleanor wanted you all to know.”
Lauren looked nervous.
“What now?”
Rebecca placed the envelope on the table.
“This is not about the house.”
She looked at Jenna’s parents.
“This is about what happened before Eleanor changed the will.”
Richard’s face became tense.
“What are you saying?”
Rebecca did not answer immediately.
She opened the envelope and removed several printed pages.
Jenna watched her father’s expression carefully.
Something about his reaction felt different.
This was not confusion.
This was fear.
Rebecca placed the papers beside the estate documents.
“These are financial records.”
Jenna’s mother leaned forward.
“Why would Eleanor have those?”
Rebecca looked at her.
“Because she discovered someone had been hiding information from her.”
The room went completely still.
Lauren looked at her parents.
“What information?”
Rebecca turned the pages toward them.
“She found out that money had been taken from her accounts without permission.”
Jenna felt a sudden chill.
Her grandmother had suspected something.
She had known.
Richard immediately shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Is it?”
His silence answered before his words could.
Lauren stepped away from the table.
“Dad?”
Richard looked down.
His hands trembled slightly.
Jenna watched the man who had spent years judging her struggle to find an explanation.
The power in the room had completely shifted.
For the first time, everyone was waiting for him to speak.
And for the first time, Richard had nowhere to hide.
Richard had nowhere to hide.
For several seconds, he stood beside the dining table without moving.
The papers in front of him seemed heavier than they should have been.
Lauren stared at her father, waiting for an answer.
Her anger toward Jenna had disappeared.
Now she was trying to understand the fear on the face of the man who always seemed certain of himself.
Richard finally looked at Rebecca.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Rebecca remained calm.
“No.”
“It is a discovery.”
Jenna watched her father carefully.
She had spent years seeing him as the strongest person in the family.
He was the one who made decisions.
He was the one who ended arguments.
He was the one everyone listened to.
But now his voice sounded smaller.
“What exactly are you accusing me of?”
Rebecca opened another page.
“I am not accusing you of anything.”
“I am showing everyone what Eleanor discovered.”
Richard reached for the papers.
Rebecca allowed him to take them.
His eyes moved across the records.
Each line seemed to make his expression more uncomfortable.
Jenna looked at the documents from where she stood.
She did not understand every detail, but she understood the reaction.
Something important had been hidden.
Her mother moved closer to Richard.
“What is this?”
Richard did not answer.
“Richard.”
He looked at her.
“It’s complicated.”
Lauren immediately stepped forward.
“Complicated how?”
Nobody responded.
The silence became an answer by itself.
Jenna felt a deep sadness replace the anger she had carried for years.
She had wanted the truth.
She had wanted justice.
But she had never wanted to see her family collapse.
Rebecca noticed Jenna’s expression.
“Eleanor did not want revenge.”
Jenna looked at her.
“She wanted honesty.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That was always her priority.”
Richard placed the papers down.
“You don’t understand the situation.”
Rebecca looked directly at him.
“Then explain it.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Lauren looked between them.
“Dad.”
Her voice changed.
It was no longer demanding.
It was uncertain.
“Tell me what happened.”
Richard sat down slowly.
The confident man who had controlled every family conversation was suddenly exhausted.
“I made mistakes.”
Jenna’s mother looked shocked.
“What kind of mistakes?”
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Years ago, when the business struggled, I borrowed money.”
Lauren frowned.
“From Grandma?”
Richard did not answer.
That was enough.
Jenna closed her eyes for a moment.
She remembered Eleanor mentioning financial worries.
She remembered being told not to ask too many questions.
She remembered how quickly everyone changed the subject whenever money came up.
“How much?” Jenna asked quietly.
Richard looked at her.
“I paid it back.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No, you didn’t.”
Richard looked at her sharply.
“You don’t know everything.”
“I know enough.”
Rebecca placed another document on the table.
“Eleanor knew about the withdrawals.”
Richard became silent.
“She also knew some payments were hidden through different accounts.”
Lauren looked horrified.
“Dad, did you steal from her?”
Richard immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“I was trying to protect the family.”
Jenna looked at him.
“By hiding it?”
Richard looked away.
The answer hurt more because he could not deny it.
Her mother slowly sat down.
“This entire time?”
Richard lowered his voice.
May you like
“I thought I could fix it.”
Rebecca sighed.
