Chương 8

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

Not like a movie.

Just enough.

Enough for me to know.

Enough for everyone close enough to see.

Richard took a step back.

Tyler looked confused.

“What?”

Mason shook his head.

“That’s not what you think.”

I almost laughed.

Because everyone who was hiding something always said that.

“It never is.”

“Rachel.”

“Was she there?”

He looked away.

That was all I needed.

My hand moved protectively over Lily.

The baby who had arrived into a world where her father was already building a life outside ours.

“What was happening?” I asked.

Mason's voice dropped.

“Nothing.”

I closed my eyes.

For a second, I was back on the mountain.

Not because of the snow.

Because of the feeling.

That moment when I realized I was alone.

The terrible understanding that the person who should have stayed was the person leaving.

I opened my eyes.

“Then why are you afraid?”

He didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

Not anymore.

The ballroom doors opened.

A man in a gray coat stepped inside.

He looked around until he found Mason.

Then he walked toward us.

“Mason Whitmore?”

Everyone turned.

Mason went completely still.

The man held up an envelope.

“I was told you would be here.”

Mason stared at it.

“Who sent you?”

The man looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Mason.

“Your attorney.”

Nobody spoke.

The man extended the envelope.

“And you should probably read this before anyone else does.”

Mason stared at the envelope.

He didn't reach for it.

That was the first thing everyone noticed.

Not the words on the envelope.

Not the man holding it.

Not even the fact that an attorney had interrupted his wedding.

It was the hesitation.

Mason Whitmore, the man who always had an answer, stood completely still.

The attorney lowered his hand slightly.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

Mason blinked.

Then he took the envelope.

His fingers were steady.

Almost.

A small tremor moved through his hand before he hid it by turning the paper over.

“What is this?” Richard asked.

The attorney looked at him.

“I’m sorry, but I can only discuss that with Mr. Whitmore.”

Mason looked around the room.

The guests who remained were no longer pretending they weren't watching.

The wedding had become something else.

A public unraveling.

A room full of witnesses.

“Can we go somewhere private?” Mason asked.

The attorney didn't move.

“I was instructed to deliver it here if I couldn't reach you before the ceremony.”

Mason looked at him.

“Who instructed you?”

The attorney paused.

“Your legal counsel.”

A strange expression crossed Mason's face.

Almost disbelief.

“You contacted my attorney?”

The attorney shook his head.

“No.”

That answer changed everything.

Mason looked down at the envelope again.

I watched him carefully.

Because suddenly I wasn't the only person in the room who knew Mason had been hiding something.

The envelope had not come from me.

The attorney had not come because I asked him to.

Whatever was inside existed before tonight.

Before I arrived.

Before Claire walked away.

Mason opened it.

He pulled out several pages.

For a few seconds, his eyes moved quickly.

Then slowly.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

I had seen Mason angry.

I had seen him defensive.

I had seen him annoyed.

I had never seen him look afraid.

Not like that.

“What is it?” Tyler asked.

Mason folded the papers immediately.

“Nothing.”

Nobody even reacted this time.

The word had lost all meaning.

Richard stepped closer.

“Stop saying that.”

Mason looked at him.

“I said I’ll handle it.”

“You keep saying that too.”

His father’s voice was quieter now.

“That is the problem.”

Mason looked away.

The attorney cleared his throat.

“I should let you know the documents are time sensitive.”

Mason looked back.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you need to respond within the stated period.”

“Respond to what?”

The attorney glanced at the papers in Mason’s hand.

“I believe you already know.”

Mason looked like he wanted to argue.

But he didn't.

That scared me more than if he had.

Because Mason argued when he believed he could win.

Silence was what happened when he knew the ground beneath him was unstable.

I stepped closer.

“What was in the envelope?”

His eyes moved to mine.

For a second, I saw the old Mason.

The one who knew exactly how to make me question myself.

The one who would soften his voice and make me feel guilty for asking.

“Rachel, please.”

I felt my stomach turn.

Not because of the request.

Because I recognized it.

He wasn't asking me to understand.

He was asking me to stop.

“No.”

His face tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Then explain.”

“I can’t.”

The answer came too quickly.

The room went silent.

Mason realized what he had admitted.

He tried to fix it.

“I mean, this isn't something we should discuss here.”

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that whenever the truth gets close.”

He looked down.

The attorney stepped away slightly.

Professional distance.

But even he seemed uncomfortable.

The message on my phone still sat unanswered.

The photograph still existed.

The question still waited.

Why was Lauren at the hospital the night Lily was born?

I looked at Mason.

“Who is Lauren?”

His expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

“She was a coworker.”

“A coworker who was at the hospital?”

“She came by.”

“Why?”

He didn't answer.

I nodded slowly.

Because there it was.

Another silence.

Another missing piece.

“How long?”

Mason frowned.

“What?”

“How long were you seeing her?”

“I wasn't seeing her.”

“You just said she came by.”

“She was a friend.”

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the explanation was so familiar.

A friend.

A coworker.

Someone to talk to.

The vocabulary changed.

The behavior didn't.

“Was Claire the reason?” I asked.

Mason looked hurt.

That was almost impressive.

He could still look hurt while standing inside the damage he created.

“No.”

May you like

“Then what was?”

His jaw tightened.
