Chương 2

The door was only a few feet away.

The entire room watched as Emily reached for the handle.

Then she paused.

For one final moment, Daniel hoped she would turn around.

She did.

Their eyes met across the room.

There was sadness there.

There was love there.

But there was also something stronger.

Respect for herself.

“I hope someday you understand what you lost,” Emily said.

Then she opened the door.

Daniel took a breath, but the words disappeared before they reached his lips.

Emily stepped into the hallway and walked away.

The door slowly closed behind her.

Inside the conference room, nobody moved.

Daniel remained standing, staring at the place where she had disappeared.

The video screens continued showing silent faces from around the world.

The meeting had ended without anyone saying the official words.

Because everyone already knew.

Something far more important than a business deal had just collapsed.

And everyone who witnessed it would remember the moment Emily Carter chose herself.

For several minutes after the door closed, Daniel Whitmore remained standing in the center of the conference room as if his body had forgotten how to move.

The polished floor beneath him reflected the empty space where Emily had been standing, and that emptiness felt louder than the voices from the screens behind him.

One by one, the faces on the video wall disappeared as executives quietly ended their connections.

No one wanted to be the first person to speak.

No one wanted to pretend they had not witnessed the most personal moment of Daniel’s life.

The final screen went dark, leaving only the reflection of the room and the three people who remained.

Daniel slowly lowered himself back into his chair.

His eyes stayed fixed on the closed door.

Sophia stood several feet away, watching him carefully.

She had seen Daniel handle hostile negotiations, angry investors, and impossible deadlines.

She had seen him walk into rooms full of powerful people and make everyone believe he was always in control.

But she had never seen him look defeated.

“Daniel,” Sophia said quietly.

He did not respond.

His hands rested on the table, and his fingers moved slightly as though he was trying to hold onto something that was no longer there.

“Daniel, you need to say something.”

He finally looked up.

“What am I supposed to say?”

Sophia looked away.

For the first time, she did not have an answer.

Because the problem was not finding the right words.

The problem was that the right words should have been spoken before Emily walked away.

Daniel leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

He could still hear Emily’s voice.

I believe what I saw.

Those five words repeated in his mind over and over.

He had spent the entire morning preparing for the conference.

He had reviewed numbers, presentations, and strategies.

He had prepared answers for every possible business question.

But he had not prepared for the one question Emily had asked without saying a word.

Could she still trust him?

Sophia slowly gathered her purse from the table.

“I should go.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Wait.”

She stopped.

The room became quiet again.

Daniel looked at her, but his expression was different now.

There was no anger.

There was no accusation.

Only exhaustion.

“Were you ever going to tell me?”

Sophia’s face tightened.

She knew exactly what he meant.

The secret they had both avoided discussing.

The reason Emily had walked into that conference room with a broken expression.

The reason the entire situation had exploded in front of everyone.

Sophia lowered her eyes.

“I tried.”

Daniel laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“When?”

She looked back at him.

“When you refused to listen.”

The words struck him because he knew they were true.

For weeks, Daniel had convinced himself that ignoring the problem would make it disappear.

He had told himself he was protecting Emily.

He had told himself he was protecting the company.

But deep down, he knew he was protecting himself.

He was afraid of what would happen if everything came into the light.

Sophia walked closer but stopped before reaching him.

“You thought you could control how everyone saw you.”

Daniel remained silent.

“You thought if you explained it the right way, people would understand.”

His jaw tightened.

“But Emily didn’t need a perfect explanation.”

Sophia’s voice softened.

“She needed honesty.”

Daniel looked down at the table.

The same table where Emily had placed her handbag earlier.

The same table where she had stood while everyone watched her heart break.

“I never wanted to hurt her.”

Sophia nodded slowly.

“I know.”

Daniel looked up.

“But that doesn’t change what happened.”

The honesty in Sophia’s voice hurt more than anger would have.

Because anger could be dismissed.

Truth could not.

Daniel stood and walked toward the window overlooking the city.

The glass reflected his own face back at him.

A man who looked successful from the outside.

A man who had built an empire.

A man who had somehow destroyed the one relationship that mattered most.

“I thought I had more time.”

Sophia crossed her arms.

“Everyone thinks they have more time.”

Daniel stared at the streets below.

People moved through the city without knowing that his entire world had changed.

Cars passed.

Buildings stood tall.

The city continued as if nothing had happened.

But inside that conference room, everything was different.

A phone on the table suddenly vibrated.

Daniel looked at it.

Emily’s name appeared on the screen.

His heart stopped for a moment.

He reached toward it immediately.

Then he froze.

His hand hovered above the phone.

For the first time, he wondered if answering was the selfish choice.

The call ended.

A few seconds later, a message appeared.

Sophia watched his face change.

“What did she say?”

Daniel picked up the phone.

His eyes moved across the screen slowly.

“She wants her things sent to the apartment.”

May you like

Sophia exhaled quietly.

Daniel stared at the message.
