Chương 5

Instead, he started with small things.

Breakfast at the kitchen table.

Helping with homework.

Listening to stories about school.

Learning which cartoons Ethan liked and which jokes made him laugh.

The first time Ethan called him Dad happened by accident.

It was a rainy evening.

David was helping him build a model airplane in the family room while Clara watched from across the room.

The small pieces were scattered everywhere.

Ethan struggled to attach one of the wings.

“Can you help me, Dad?”

The room became completely silent.

Ethan froze.

His eyes widened as he realized what he had said.

David stopped moving.

For a moment, he looked almost afraid.

Then he smiled gently.

“You can call me whatever feels right.”

Ethan looked down at the airplane.

“I meant it.”

David swallowed hard.

“I know.”

Clara turned away for a moment because she did not want them to see the tears forming in her eyes.

She had imagined many moments in her life.

She had imagined anger.

She had imagined confrontation.

She had imagined finally proving the truth.

But she had never imagined witnessing her son discover a father.

Meanwhile, the investigation into Margaret and Victor Hale continued.

The documents David uncovered revealed a much larger plan than anyone expected.

They had not only separated Clara from David.

They had manipulated company decisions.

They had hidden financial information.

They had used fear and reputation to control everyone around them.

The Sterling board of directors demanded answers.

Employees who once admired Margaret began distancing themselves.

People who had ignored Clara’s warnings now suddenly claimed they had always suspected something was wrong.

Clara noticed.

She noticed how quickly people changed when the powerful person lost control.

One afternoon, David found her standing alone outside the mansion near the garden.

The same garden where she once cried after leaving.

“You still hate this place,” he said.

Clara looked at the flowers.

“I do not hate it.”

She paused.

“I hate what it represented.”

David stood beside her.

“What did it represent?”

“A place where everyone had a voice except me.”

The words stayed with him.

“I am sorry.”

Clara looked at him.

“You say that a lot.”

“Because I mean it every time.”

She looked away.

“I believe you now.”

That surprised him.

“But believing you does not mean everything disappears.”

“I know.”

She nodded slowly.

“That is the difference.”

David looked at her.

“What is?”

“Before, you wanted forgiveness before you understood the damage.”

She took a breath.

“Now you understand the damage.”

He accepted the truth of her words.

“I should have listened.”

“Yes.”

“I should have protected you.”

“Yes.”

“I should have fought harder.”

Clara looked at him.

“Yes.”

There was no cruelty in her answer.

Only honesty.

And for the first time, David realized honesty was not something to fear.

It was something that allowed people to heal.

A few days later, David decided to take Ethan somewhere important.

He brought Clara with them.

They drove to a quiet lake outside the city.

The same place where the old photograph had been taken years earlier.

Ethan ran toward the water while David and Clara walked behind him.

“You remembered this place,” Clara said.

“I remembered everything about you.”

She looked at him.

“Then why did you believe I left?”

David looked down.

“Because believing the lie was easier than accepting that I failed you.”

Clara was quiet.

The answer hurt.

But it was the truth.

They watched Ethan skip stones across the water.

“He looks like you,” Clara said softly.

David smiled.

“He has your stubbornness.”

She almost laughed.

“Definitely.”

For a moment, they felt like the family they could have been.

Then David’s phone rang.

His expression changed when he saw the name.

“What happened?”

The voice on the other end spoke quickly.

David’s face became serious.

Clara noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

David ended the call.

“They found something connected to Victor.”

“What?”

“A hidden account.”

Clara’s expression changed.

“Does it involve Margaret?”

David nodded.

“Possibly.”

The discovery led them back to the beginning.

Victor had created a backup plan.

He had stored evidence that could damage several powerful people, including members of the Sterling family.

David knew immediately why.

Victor wanted protection.

He wanted leverage.

He wanted everyone afraid of exposing him.

That evening, David sat in his office reviewing the files.

Clara entered quietly.

“You are going after him.”

David looked up.

“Yes.”

“I know that look.”

“What look?”

“The one you had before you built your company.”

David smiled slightly.

“You remember.”

“I remember everything.”

He looked at her.

“Are you worried?”

“Yes.”

The answer surprised him.

“About what?”

“That you will become so focused on revenge that you forget what matters.”

David looked at the papers on his desk.

Then at the photo of Ethan beside the window.

“I am not doing this for revenge.”

“Then why?”

“Because my son deserves to grow up knowing the truth.”

Clara nodded.

“That is different.”

David stood.

“I spent years letting other people control my choices.”

He placed the documents away.

The next morning, Victor Hale appeared outside the Sterling headquarters.

He walked confidently through the entrance, believing he still had control.

But this time, nobody stepped aside in fear.

David waited for him inside the conference room.

Clara stood beside him.

Ethan was safely at school, far away from the confrontation.

Victor smiled when he entered.

“I wondered when you would finally come.”

David looked at him calmly.

“You knew.”

Victor did not deny it.

“I knew enough.”

Clara felt anger rise inside her.

“You ruined my life.”

Victor looked at her.

“No.”

He smiled coldly.

“You allowed people to ruin it.”

David stepped forward.

“That ends today.”

Victor laughed.

“You think you can destroy me?”

David placed a folder on the table.

“No.”

He looked directly at him.

“I think the truth already did.”

For the first time, Victor’s confidence disappeared.

May you like

Because he understood something Margaret never did.

The people he manipulated were no longer divided.
