Chương 5

“I have heard it before.”

Claire closed her eyes.

She knew the moment had finally arrived.

“Where?” Daniel asked.

Maya looked down.

“My mother used to mention that name when I was younger.”

The room became silent.

Evelyn stared at her.

“Your mother?”

Maya nodded slowly.

“She would talk about someone named Laura whenever she was upset.”

“She always said Laura knew the truth about what happened.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Then why have none of us heard this before?”

Because the answer was painful.

Because some stories were buried so deeply that people convinced themselves they were protecting others by keeping them hidden.

Evelyn looked at the photograph again.

“Laura was my closest friend many years ago.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Your friend?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She was there during the hardest moment of my life.”

Daniel stepped back slightly.

He felt as if the entire history of his family was being rewritten in front of him.

Maya touched the edge of the blanket nervously.

“So why was she with me in this picture?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“That is the question I have been asking myself since I saw it.”

The photograph showed Maya much younger, standing outside a building she did not recognize.

Laura stood beside her with a protective expression.

Not like a stranger.

Like someone who cared deeply.

Maya looked at the image again.

A strange feeling passed through her.

She remembered fragments.

A voice comforting her when she was afraid.

A woman holding her hand.

A promise that everything would be okay.

But the memories were unclear.

They existed like pieces of a dream.

“I remember her,” Maya whispered.

Everyone turned toward her.

“You do?”

Maya nodded slowly.

“But I thought it was someone I imagined.”

Her voice became softer.

“When I was little, I used to remember a woman who would visit me.”

“She would tell me stories.”

“She would tell me that one day everything would make sense.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with emotion.

Because she understood something now.

The person Maya had been trying to forget was the person who had carried the truth all along.

“Laura knew about everything,” Evelyn said.

Daniel looked at her.

“Everything?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She knew the reason behind the decisions that changed our family.”

Maya looked frightened.

“Then why did nobody tell me?”

Evelyn lowered her gaze.

“Because Laura disappeared before she could.”

The answer shocked everyone.

Daniel frowned.

“Disappeared?”

Evelyn nodded.

“After everything happened, she left without explaining where she was going.”

Maya’s breathing became heavier.

“You mean she left me?”

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became firm.

“She would never have abandoned you.”

Maya looked confused.

“Then why?”

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Because she was trying to protect you.”

The hospital room fell silent again.

The pattern was becoming clear.

Every person involved had made decisions based on fear.

Every person had believed silence was the only way to protect someone.

And every silence had created another wound.

Daniel walked toward Maya.

“Do you remember anything else?”

Maya closed her eyes.

She searched through memories she had avoided for years.

“I remember a hospital.”

Evelyn looked surprised.

“What hospital?”

Maya opened her eyes.

“This one.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked around the room.

The same white walls.

The same hallway outside.

The same place where the truth was finally coming together.

“You were here before?” he asked.

Maya shook her head.

“I do not know.”

“But something about this place feels familiar.”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“Maybe that is why everything happened here.”

Evelyn looked unsettled.

She had never considered that.

She had believed this hospital was only the place where a new life began.

She had not realized it was also connected to an old story.

Maya slowly touched the photograph again.

“Who was Laura to me?”

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation frightened everyone more than the answer.

Because they knew whatever came next would change everything.

“She was someone who loved you,” Evelyn said.

Maya waited.

“But she was also the person who knew who your real family was.”

Daniel stared at Evelyn.

“What are you saying?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I am saying there are parts of Maya’s past that even Maya does not know.”

Maya’s face went pale.

“No.”

The word came out almost like a whisper.

“I cannot do this again.”

Daniel immediately moved closer.

“Maya.”

She shook her head.

“I spent my entire life discovering that people were hiding things from me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I do not know who I am anymore.”

Daniel held her hand.

“You are still you.”

“But what if everything I know is wrong?”

Daniel looked at her carefully.

“Then we find the truth together.”

For the first time, nobody argued.

Nobody accused.

Nobody tried to control the outcome.

They simply stood together in the uncertainty.

Evelyn placed the photograph back on the table.

“There is one more thing you need to see.”

Maya looked at her.

Evelyn reached into the envelope and pulled out another folded paper.

It was older than the others.

The edges were damaged.

The handwriting on the front was faded.

But the name written there was clear.

Maya saw it immediately.

Her entire expression changed.

Because the letter was addressed to her.

Not the Maya she was today.

But the little girl she used to be.

And the first sentence inside revealed that Laura had known the secret would eventually come out.

A natural next step is to continue with the next segment and reveal the contents of Laura’s letter.

Maya stared at the old letter resting on the hospital bed, unable to move her hands toward it.

The name written across the front felt familiar and distant at the same time.

It belonged to a version of herself she barely remembered.

A child who had lived through moments her adult mind had tried to bury.

Daniel stayed beside her, holding her hand firmly.

May you like

“You do not have to read it alone,” he said softly.

Maya looked at him, tears gathering in her eyes.
