Chương 7

The legal process continued slowly.
Slower than either of them wanted.
The lawyers spoke in careful sentences.
The accountants reviewed numbers.
The paperwork moved between offices.
The marriage that had once been filled with conversations now existed mostly through documents.
There was something strangely fitting about that.
For years, they had avoided saying the important things.
Now strangers were writing them down.
One afternoon, Audrey met with Melissa again.
The meeting was shorter than usual.
That worried Audrey.
“What happened?”
Melissa placed a folder on the table.
“Something unexpected.”
Audrey opened it.
Inside were records from Robert’s business accounts.
She scanned the pages.
“What am I looking at?”
“Something your husband discovered.”
Audrey looked up.
“My husband?”
Melissa noticed the reaction.
“He brought this to us.”
Audrey looked back at the papers.
There were transfers.
Payments.
Several transactions she had never seen before.
“What are these?”
Melissa folded her hands.
“That is what we are trying to determine.”
Audrey felt the old instinct return.
The instinct to immediately solve everything.
To organize.
To fix.
But she stopped herself.
“What does Robert say?”
“He says he found inconsistencies while reviewing his own company records.”
Audrey frowned.
“Why would he show me this?”
Melissa leaned back.
“That is the question.”
For years, Audrey had trusted Robert’s intelligence.
She had never doubted that he was capable.
What she had doubted was whether he cared enough to use that ability for the right reasons.
Now she was facing something she did not expect.
A version of Robert she did not fully recognize.
Not the man from the gate.
Not the man from the marriage.
Someone somewhere between those two people.
That evening, Robert sat in his office long after everyone else had left.
The building was almost empty.
The cleaning staff had already passed through his floor.
The lights in nearby offices were dark.
He used to love being the last person there.
He told himself it showed dedication.
Now he wondered if it had simply made it easier not to notice what was happening around him.
The records bothered him.
Not because they threatened him.
Because they reminded him of something.
Audrey had warned him before.
Not about the affair.
About the business.
She had mentioned unusual expenses.
She had asked why certain accounts were structured differently.
He had smiled and told her she worried too much.
He had kissed her forehead.
He had called her careful.
As if careful was a weakness.
Now he was sitting in the same office realizing that her caution had been the thing protecting him.
His assistant Mark appeared at the doorway.
“You’re still here.”
Robert looked up.
“So are you.”
Mark held up a folder.
“I forgot this.”
He stepped inside.
Then noticed the papers on the desk.
“Is that what I think it is?”
Robert closed the folder.
“What do you think it is?”
Mark hesitated.
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“Whether you want the honest answer.”
Robert almost smiled.
That sounded like something Audrey would say.
“Give me the honest answer.”
Mark looked at the folder.
“I think it is the first time in years you are looking at something without assuming you already know the answer.”
Robert looked away.
The comment irritated him.
Mostly because it was accurate.
“What if I missed something?”
Mark shrugged.
“Then you missed something.”
“That simple?”
“No.”
Mark walked toward the door.
“But ignoring it won’t make it less true.”
After he left, Robert opened the folder again.
This time, he did not look for a way to protect himself.
He looked for what he had failed to see.
The following week, Robert asked Audrey to meet.
She almost refused.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she knew herself.
She knew how easily old habits could return.
They met at a small restaurant near the coast.
Not the expensive places they used to visit.
Not somewhere designed to impress.
Just a quiet place with wooden tables and people talking softly around them.
Robert arrived early.
Audrey noticed.
He always arrived exactly on time before.
Never early.
Being early meant waiting.
Waiting meant someone else controlled the moment.
She sat down across from him.
“What did you find?”
Robert did not waste time.
That was another difference.
“I found evidence that someone has been moving money through accounts connected to the company.”
Audrey looked at him.
“Someone?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“You have suspicions.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Robert looked down.
“My chief financial officer.”
Audrey said nothing.
The name did not surprise her.
She had met him several times.
He was charming.
Confident.
Always prepared.
The kind of person people trusted because he looked like he trusted himself.
“Why are you telling me?”
Robert took a breath.
“Because some of the records I found were from a period when you were still involved in reviewing finances.”
Audrey understood immediately.
“They could try to blame me.”
“Yes.”
The answer was honest.
That mattered.
She looked out toward the ocean.
A family walked along the beach.
A child chased birds near the water.
Normal life.
She wondered how many people around them were carrying problems nobody could see.
“What do you need from me?”
Robert looked surprised.
“I don’t know.”
It was probably the most honest thing he had said to her in years.
Audrey looked back.
“That is new.”
A small smile appeared on his face.
“Yeah.”
The moment disappeared quickly.
But she noticed it.
Not because she wanted it back.
Because she remembered when it used to be common.
“I need the old financial records,” Audrey said.
Robert nodded.
“I can get them.”
“No.”
She looked directly at him.
“You cannot just get them.”
He stopped.
“This is what you still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“You think having access means having control.”
The words were not angry.
They were practical.
“You need to follow the process.”
Robert nodded slowly.
A year ago, he would have argued.
He would have explained why he knew better.

Now he simply said, “Okay.”
Audrey noticed that too.
