Chương 4

He opened his laptop.

"There were conversations with an investment group."

"Which group?"

He hesitated.

"Prescott Capital."

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Prescott Capital was Aaron's private investment company.

Technically separate from Prescott Group.

But the separation existed mostly on paper.

"What was he moving?"

"Nothing has been moved."

"Yet."

Daniel did not correct me.

That told me enough.

"How long have you known about this?"

"Three weeks."

I looked at him.

"Three weeks."

"Alyssa, it was preliminary."

"Was I informed?"

He stayed quiet.

That was his answer.

I turned toward the window.

Three weeks.

Three weeks of meetings.

Three weeks of conversations.

Three weeks where Aaron was making decisions about the future of something I had helped create without thinking I deserved to be in the room.

I had spent years believing marriage meant partnership.

Aaron had spent years proving he saw it as permission.

"Why are you showing me this now?" Daniel asked.

I looked back at him.

"Because today was the first time Aaron publicly reminded me that he thinks I have no place beside him."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

He understood more than he wanted to admit.

The truth was rarely discovered in one dramatic moment.

Usually, it was built from hundreds of small moments people ignored.

The forgotten anniversary.

The interrupted conversation.

The assumption that one person would always forgive.

"Did you come here to take control?" Daniel asked.

The question was direct.

I appreciated that.

"No."

"Then what?"

I looked at the folder.

"I came here to make sure nobody confuses my silence with surrender."

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Several people.

The door opened before anyone knocked.

Aaron walked in.

The confidence was back.

The CEO mask.

Perfectly fitted.

Behind him was Evelyn.

And behind them was Jasmine.

The same three people who had watched me leave the plane.

The difference was that now they were walking into my territory.

Aaron stopped when he saw Daniel's laptop open.

His eyes moved to the folder on the table.

For the first time since I had known him, I saw real fear cross his face.

It disappeared quickly.

But it was there.

"What is this?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Jasmine looked uncomfortable.

Evelyn looked angry.

Aaron looked at me.

Not Daniel.

Not the documents.

Me.

"Alyssa."

His voice was lower now.

"What are you doing?"

I almost smiled.

Because that was the same question he had asked when I stood in front of the jet.

What are you doing?

As if my reaction was the problem.

Not what caused it.

"I'm reviewing company documents."

"With my lawyer?"

Daniel interrupted.

"Actually, Aaron, Daniel is corporate counsel."

Aaron's jaw tightened.

"You know what I mean."

Daniel closed his laptop.

"No, I don't think I do."

That surprised everyone.

Daniel had always been careful around Aaron.

Not fearful.

But careful.

The difference mattered.

Aaron stepped farther into the room.

"Can I speak with my wife alone?"

I looked at Jasmine.

She immediately looked away.

Interesting.

Even now, she understood she was part of the problem.

She just did not want to carry the weight of it.

"No," I said.

Aaron blinked.

"What?"

"No."

The word sounded strange coming from me.

Simple.

Small.

But powerful.

His face hardened.

"This is between us."

"No."

I repeated it.

"This became bigger than us when you decided my contribution to your company was something you could erase."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Alyssa, don't exaggerate."

I turned to her.

That was the first time I noticed something.

Evelyn was not angry because I was wrong.

She was angry because she could no longer control the story.

"You knew," I said.

Her expression changed.

"Knew what?"

"Everything."

Silence.

Aaron looked at his mother.

Just for a second.

But that second was enough.

Because I saw something I had not expected.

Confusion.

Real confusion.

He did not know how much Evelyn knew.

Interesting.

"You never told him?" I asked.

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

"This is not the place."

"No."

I picked up the folder.

"This is exactly the place."

Aaron stared at me.

"What are you talking about?"

I opened the first page.

"The first funding agreement."

His expression shifted.

"What about it?"

I looked at him.

"The investment that saved your company."

He laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he did not understand.

"My first investors saved the company."

I nodded slowly.

"There it is."

"There what is?"

"The story."

I placed the document on the table.

"The one you have repeated so many times that you started believing it."

Aaron looked down.

Daniel watched him carefully.

The room became quiet.

"The first major investment into Prescott Group came from my family trust," I said.

Aaron's face went still.

"No."

The word came quickly.

Too quickly.

Like his mind rejected the possibility before hearing the explanation.

"That isn't true."

"It is."

"No."

He looked at Daniel.

"Tell her this isn't what she thinks."

Daniel did not answer.

That silence hurt Aaron more than my words.

Because Daniel's silence meant the evidence existed.

"Aaron," I said softly.

"Seven years ago, when your company was three weeks away from missing payroll, who do you think signed the emergency transfer?"

His eyes returned to mine.

The room felt smaller.

"You told me it was handled."

"I told you the company was safe."

"You said investors believed in me."

"They did."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

I looked at him.

That question was almost painful.

Because hidden inside it was something human.

For one moment, I saw the man from the apartment floor.

The man who was scared.

The man who needed help.

"I thought you would know," I said.

Aaron's expression changed.

"What?"

"I thought you knew."

The silence that followed was heavier than anger.

Because maybe that was the cruelest part.

I had assumed he understood.

He had assumed he was entitled.

Somewhere between those two beliefs, our marriage disappeared.

Jasmine quietly stepped backward.

May you like

Evelyn looked away.

Daniel closed the folder.
