Chương 2

Evelyn held onto it.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

It was such a small thing.

A folder.

A piece of paper.

But Daniel felt the entire history between them sitting there.

Every time she had hidden information.

Every time she had said she was protecting him.

Every time he had accepted that answer because fighting her was exhausting.

She released the folder.

Inside were printed records from the mansion security system.

Daniel scanned the pages.

Most entries meant nothing.

Employees.

Deliveries.

Maintenance.

Then he saw his name.

His access code.

A timestamp from the previous night.

Daniel stared at it.

“I was not here.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“I was not here.”

“I know.”

He looked up.

“You know?”

The room became quiet.

The security employee looked at the floor.

Daniel felt something cold move through his chest.

Not fear exactly.

Something worse.

The feeling of realizing a person you trusted had been living beside a truth you were never allowed to see.

“You knew someone used my code.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“And you did not tell me?”

Evelyn folded her arms.

“I was trying to find out why.”

“That is not your decision to make.”

“It became my decision when your daughter was involved.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

The baby had fallen asleep.

That almost made everything harder.

A sleeping child made the world feel normal.

And nothing about this was normal.

“Who has access to my code?”

“I do not know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to understand that knowing someone entered this house is different from knowing who they are.”

Daniel looked back at the report.

There was another detail.

A note printed at the bottom.

Security override requested.

He pointed at it.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Mom.”

Her eyes moved toward the staircase.

“Daniel, listen to me carefully.”

The seriousness in her voice stopped him.

“You need to take Emma and leave.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever entered this house yesterday was not looking for money.”

Daniel waited.

“What were they looking for?”

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

The old confidence returned, but now it looked forced.

“I do not know.”

“You just said they were not looking for money.”

“I know what they were not looking for.”

“That is not good enough.”

A car door closed outside.

The sound was distant but clear.

Evelyn turned toward the windows.

The color drained from her face.

Daniel noticed.

He moved toward the entrance.

“Who is here?”

“Do not open that door.”

“Mom.”

“Daniel.”

Her voice stopped him.

Not because she sounded powerful.

Because she sounded afraid.

The doorbell rang once.

Then again.

Daniel stood in the center of the mansion holding his daughter while his mother stared at the person waiting outside.

For the first time in his life, Evelyn Mercer looked like someone who had no idea what would happen next.

And when the third ring came, Daniel understood the night had not been about discovering what happened to Emma.

It had been about discovering why someone wanted him to find her.

The third ring echoed through the entrance hall, and Daniel's arms tightened around Emma before he even realized he was moving.

Evelyn stepped between him and the door.

"Do not."

Daniel stared at her.

"You have spent my entire life telling me what not to do."

"This time you should listen."

"Why?"

Her silence lasted too long.

That was the answer he hated most.

The door opened before either of them reached it.

A woman stood outside beneath the covered entrance, her dark coat soaked at the shoulders and her hair pulled back as if she had been running her hands through it all night.

Daniel did not recognize her.

Evelyn did.

The woman's eyes moved past her and landed on the baby.

"Is that Emma?"

Daniel felt something in his stomach drop.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at Evelyn first.

Not him.

That small choice told Daniel more than an introduction would have.

"I am someone who tried to warn her."

Evelyn's face hardened.

"You need to leave."

The woman gave a tired laugh that contained no humor.

"That is still your first response."

Daniel looked between them.

"Mom."

Evelyn did not move.

"Daniel, take Emma upstairs."

"No."

The answer surprised even him.

For years, he had learned to step back when Evelyn used that voice.

He had learned that arguments with her ended with him feeling exhausted and somehow guilty for starting them.

Not tonight.

Not while he was holding the child they had both failed to protect.

"Tell me who she is."

Evelyn looked at the woman.

The woman looked at Daniel.

"My name is Rachel Cole."

The name meant nothing to him.

Then Evelyn spoke.

"She used to work for the family."

Rachel's expression changed.

"That is what you call it?"

Daniel noticed the way his mother avoided looking at her.

Not anger.

Not disgust.

Something closer to shame.

"Work for the family doing what?" Daniel asked.

Rachel took a step inside when Evelyn did not stop her.

"I handled private records."

"Private records?"

"Your family's financial archives."

Daniel frowned.

"Why would someone from financial archives come here tonight?"

Rachel looked at Emma.

"Because someone accessed files they were never supposed to see."

The room became smaller.

Daniel glanced down at the security report still sitting on the table.

"Yesterday."

Rachel nodded.

"Yes."

Evelyn finally spoke.

"Rachel."

It was the first time Daniel had heard fear in his mother's voice without it being hidden behind control.

Rachel swallowed.

"You promised me you would tell him."

"I was trying to protect him."

"You always say that."

The sentence landed harder than a scream.

Daniel watched his mother's expression shift.

Just slightly.

Enough.

"What did you find?" Daniel asked.

Rachel looked at him.

"Not what I found."

She paused.

"What someone found."

Daniel waited.

Rachel looked toward the staircase.

"Your father kept a private archive before he died."

May you like

Daniel's face changed.

His father had been gone for eight years.
