Chương 2

Her voice trembled.
“I thought I was the reason he left.”
Daniel's eyes filled with regret.
“You were never the reason.”
“But you let me believe that.”
The room became silent again.
Emily turned around slowly.
She was not screaming.
She was not breaking things.
She was simply looking at the people who had hurt her in the quietest way possible.
The pain in her eyes was harder to watch than anger.
Daniel took a deep breath.
“There is more.”
Emily closed her eyes for a moment.
She almost laughed because she could not believe there was still something worse.
“What else could there possibly be?”
Daniel reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an old envelope.
The paper was worn and yellow from years of being hidden away.
Emily immediately recognized the handwriting.
It belonged to her father.
Her hands started shaking before she even touched it.
“Why do you have this?” she asked.
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because he gave it to me before he disappeared.”
Emily stared at him.
The person she trusted most had been holding onto a final message from the person she missed most.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
Daniel struggled to answer.
“Because he asked me not to.”
Emily looked confused.
“Why?”
Daniel slowly handed her the envelope.
“Because he said you would only understand when the time was right.”
Emily held the letter carefully.
For a moment, she did not open it.
She was afraid of what another truth might do to her.
The cabin remained frozen around her.
The baby began to cry softly, reminding everyone that life continued even during moments when everything changed.
Emily finally broke the seal.
The paper inside contained only a few paragraphs.
Her eyes moved across the first line, and tears immediately appeared.
My dear Emily, if you are reading this, it means I was not brave enough to tell you myself.
She stopped reading.
Her hand covered her mouth.
Daniel watched her silently.
The anger inside Emily was still there.
The betrayal was still there.
But beneath everything was the painful realization that the father she thought abandoned her had been trying to reach her in his own way.
She continued reading.
Every sentence revealed another piece of a story she had never been allowed to know.
A story about mistakes, fear, love, and choices that had affected an entire family.
The fireplace continued burning.
The snow continued falling.
But inside that cabin, nothing would ever return to the way it was before.
The letter trembled between Emily’s fingers as she forced herself to keep reading.
My dear Emily, if you are reading this, it means I was not brave enough to tell you myself.
Her vision blurred, but she refused to wipe away the tears because she did not want anyone in the room to see how deeply the words affected her.
I never stopped loving you.
Those five words felt heavier than anything else written on the page.
Emily pressed her lips together, trying to control the emotions rising inside her.
For years, she had carried a wound created by the belief that her father had simply chosen to leave.
She had built an entire version of her life around that pain.
Now every memory was being rewritten.
She continued reading slowly.
I made mistakes that hurt people I loved, and I spent too much time believing I could fix everything by staying away.
The truth is that leaving was never because of you.
It was because I was afraid you would see the worst parts of me and never forgive them.
Emily lowered the letter for a moment.
She looked toward Daniel.
He stood near the fireplace with his hands at his sides, looking older than she remembered.
The secret he carried had clearly weighed on him for years.
“What did he mean?” Emily asked.
Daniel looked at the floor before answering.
“He made choices before you were born that he regretted for the rest of his life.”
Emily tightened her grip on the letter.
“Choices involving that woman?”
Daniel hesitated.
The hesitation told her enough.
Rachel stepped forward carefully.
“Emily, there are things you need to hear from all of us.”
Emily laughed quietly, but there was no happiness in the sound.
“That is what everyone keeps saying.”
She looked around the cabin.
“Things I need to hear.”
Her eyes moved from one person to another.
“But nobody ever thought I needed the truth.”
Nobody interrupted.
The silence became its own confession.
Emily returned her attention to the letter.
The next lines were written with a different kind of emotion.
I met someone before I understood what I wanted from life.
I hurt your mother, and I hurt myself.
I spent years trying to make things right, but some damage cannot be erased.
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
Her mother had always told her that her father left because he was incapable of commitment.
She had never mentioned another woman.
She had never mentioned a child.
The photograph on the phone suddenly felt different.
It was no longer just evidence of a hidden family.
It was proof that there had been an entire chapter of her father’s life that everyone had buried.
“I want to meet her,” Emily said.
Daniel immediately looked up.
“Emily.”
“I want to meet her.”
Her voice was stronger this time.
She was not asking for permission.
She was demanding the truth she should have been given years ago.
Daniel slowly nodded.
“She is not far away.”
The answer surprised her.
“What?”
“She lives two hours from here.”
Emily stared at him.
“You knew where she was this whole time?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The disappointment on Emily’s face was impossible to hide.
She turned away from him.
The person she trusted most had not just hidden information.
He had protected a lie.
A sudden noise came from the hallway.
May you like
Everyone turned.
An older man stood near the cabin entrance, holding a small bag in one hand.
