Chương 2

Not the court version.
The laboratory version.
The first page looked identical.
The second page did not.
Claire sat down slowly.
There was a reference number in the lower corner that had been changed.
Only one digit.
Most people would never notice.
She noticed because she had spent years studying mistakes people assumed nobody could see.
Her heartbeat changed.
She pulled up the digital file from her computer and compared the two versions.
The official document submitted in court showed a laboratory processing code ending in 4821.
The copy in her hand ended in 4827.
Different samples.
Different records.
Different chain of custody.
Claire stared at the page for several minutes.
The report entered into evidence was not the report she had originally reviewed.
Someone had replaced it.
The discovery did not make her feel victorious.
It made her feel cold.
Because if she was right, someone had not simply lied about Daniel's identity.
Someone had created a false record carefully enough to survive legal review.
She reached for her phone.
Her first instinct was to call Daniel.
Her thumb hovered over his name.
Then she remembered his face in the hallway.
The disappointment.
The exhaustion.
The way he had looked at her like she had become another person making his life harder.
She put the phone down.
A knock came from the open doorway.
Claire looked up quickly.
Her coworker Maya Ortiz stood there holding a paper bag.
"You left your lunch in the refrigerator," Maya said.
Claire blinked.
"What?"
"I was going to throw it away, but then I remembered you once got angry at me for throwing away a yogurt that was apparently still alive."
Despite herself, Claire almost smiled.
"It was homemade."
"It was dangerous."
Maya stepped inside and noticed the papers on the desk.
Her expression changed.
"You look like someone who found a body."
"Something worse."
Maya waited.
She was good at waiting.
It was one of the reasons Claire trusted her.
Maya never rushed into silence just to fill it.
Claire handed her the copies.
Maya read the pages slowly.
"You are sure?"
"Yes."
"Could it be a filing mistake?"
"No."
"Could it be someone at the lab?"
"Maybe."
"Could it be someone who wanted the result to look different?"
Claire looked back at the report.
"That's what scares me."
Maya placed the papers down carefully.
"Then what are you going to do?"
Claire looked at her phone again.
At Daniel's name.
At the number she had known since they were teenagers.
"I don't know."
That answer bothered her more than anything else.
Claire Bennett had built her reputation on knowing.
Knowing what documents were real.
Knowing what evidence meant.
Knowing when something did not belong.
But now the one thing she knew for certain was that the truth had become dangerous.
The next morning, before she could decide whether to tell Daniel, her attorney called and asked her to come back to court immediately.
Richard Vale's legal team had filed a motion accusing her of tampering with evidence and interfering with a family trust proceeding.
Claire listened without speaking as the attorney explained that the accusation was not yet a finding, but it was enough to damage her credibility.
Enough to make future testimony harder.
Enough to make people wonder whether she had manipulated the evidence because she wanted a different outcome.
When the call ended, another message appeared on her phone.
It was from an unknown number.
There was only one sentence.
Stop looking at the report if you want your brother to stay safe.
Claire read it three times.
Then she looked toward the window of her office, where the city moved below her as if nothing had changed.
Her hands were shaking when she picked up the envelope again.
Inside, beneath the altered DNA report, was something she had not noticed the night before.
A handwritten note folded into the corner.
The handwriting belonged to someone who knew her family.
And it contained only three words.
Ask about Margaret.
Claire stared at the name until the letters stopped looking like a name and became a warning.
Margaret Vale had been Richard Vale's first wife, the woman who disappeared from public life nearly twenty years earlier after a bitter divorce that the newspapers described as a private family matter.
Claire had never met her.
She had only known her as a photograph in the Vale family archives, a smiling woman standing beside Richard at charity events before the smile vanished from every later article.
Daniel rarely spoke about her.
When he did, he always changed the subject before anyone could ask another question.
Claire pulled open the old cabinet beside her desk and searched through the files she kept from previous investigations.
She was not supposed to have anything related to the Vale family outside the case materials, but years of working with disputed documents had taught her that people rarely kept only what they admitted mattered.
Near the back of a folder filled with newspaper clippings, she found a photograph she had forgotten about.
It was from a fundraising event fifteen years earlier.
Richard stood at the center of the image, surrounded by executives and politicians.
Margaret stood several feet away from him, not smiling.
Her hand rested on Daniel's shoulder.
Claire looked closer.
There was something about the way Margaret held him.
Not like someone posing for a family picture.
Like someone trying to protect him from something outside the frame.
Her phone rang before she could think about it further.
The screen showed her attorney's name.
"Claire, where are you?"
"At my office."
"Leave."
The urgency in his voice made her sit straighter.
"What happened?"
"The motion from Vale's attorneys got worse."
She closed her eyes.
"How worse?"
"They are claiming you had a personal connection to Daniel that compromised your examination."
Claire looked toward the photograph.
"That's ridiculous."
"It doesn't matter if it's ridiculous."
May you like
His voice became quieter.
"It matters whether they can make someone else believe it."
