Chương 3

Claire looked at her brother.
"You don't understand."
"Then help me."
"I have been trying to help you."
Daniel's expression changed.
"By letting them blame her?"
Claire's eyes flashed.
"By keeping you alive."
The sentence hung there.
Nobody moved.
Mara looked between them.
"What does that mean?"
Neither answered.
The city lights outside the window reflected against the glass, making the office feel separate from the rest of the world.
A place where secrets could survive because everyone inside was too afraid to say them out loud.
Daniel finally spoke.
"Claire."
"No."
Her voice cracked slightly.
"You don't get to do this."
"Do what?"
"Act like you are the only person who sacrificed something."
Mara watched Daniel absorb that.
He didn't defend himself.
That was the part she couldn't understand.
A man like Daniel Whitmore had built an empire by answering every accusation with confidence.
But when his sister attacked him, he became quiet.
"What happened between you two?" Mara asked.
Claire looked at her.
"This isn't your family problem."
"No."
Mara held her gaze.
"It's my life."
The answer surprised even herself.
She had spent the past week feeling powerless.
Fired.
Accused.
Ignored.
But standing there, watching three wealthy people talk around the truth, something inside her finally hardened.
"I lost my job because someone decided I was expendable."
Nobody spoke.
"I lost my apartment because I can't afford it if my references are ruined."
She swallowed.
"And somebody went through my things."
Her voice lowered.
"So I think I get to know why."
Claire sat down slowly.
For the first time, the confidence left her face.
"My brother built Whitmore Holdings after our father died."
Mara glanced at Daniel.
She knew pieces of that story.
Everyone did.
The newspapers had written about the young man who saved a failing family business.
"The version people like is simple," Claire continued.
"Daniel worked harder than everyone else."
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Claire."
"No, let her hear it."
Claire folded her hands.
"The version people don't like is that our father left behind a company full of debt, lawsuits, and people who knew exactly how to manipulate him."
Mara stayed silent.
"Daniel spent years fixing problems nobody knew existed."
Claire looked at her brother.
"But he also learned something from our father."
"What?"
Claire's eyes moved back to Mara.
"That sometimes the person holding the knife isn't the person everyone sees."
A noise came from outside.
A phone vibrating.
Claire reached into her jacket.
The color disappeared from her face when she looked at the screen.
Daniel noticed.
"Who is it?"
She didn't answer.
"Claire."
She turned the phone around.
Mara couldn't see the name.
Only the message.
Three words.
You failed again.
Daniel's face changed.
"Give me the phone."
"No."
"Claire."
"No."
The fear in her voice was different from before.
Not fear of losing money.
Not fear of losing power.
Fear of someone who had control over her.
Mara stepped closer.
"Who sent that?"
Claire locked the phone.
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me."
Claire looked at her.
Something passed between them.
A small shift.
Not trust.
Not yet.
But recognition.
"You really don't know what you found, do you?"
Mara felt a cold feeling settle in her stomach.
"What does that mean?"
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then at the documents on the desk.
"The account isn't the crime."
Daniel went still.
"What?"
"The account is where they wanted you to look."
Mara stared at her.
"Then what is the crime?"
Claire stood.
Her hands were shaking now.
"The money was moved to hide something else."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Claire, stop."
But she kept going.
"The company records were altered three years ago."
Mara looked at Daniel.
"Three years ago?"
The same year she started working for him.
The same year Daniel had suddenly changed the way he handled every major decision.
Claire nodded.
"And whoever did it needed someone inside the company who could access information without raising suspicion."
Mara felt the answer forming before Claire said it.
"No."
Claire looked at her.
"They chose you because you were trusted."
The room became painfully quiet.
Mara looked at Daniel.
For a moment, she couldn't tell which emotion hurt more.
Anger.
Fear.
Or the possibility that he had known all along.
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, the office lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every screen on the desk turned black.
A second later, Daniel's computer came back on.
A single file appeared on the monitor.
No folder.
No message.
Just one name.
MARA ELLIS.
She stared at it.
Daniel moved toward the keyboard.
"Don't touch it."
Mara grabbed his arm.
"Why?"
His eyes stayed on the screen.
"Because whoever sent that wants us to open it."
"And?"
Daniel looked at her.
"And they already know we found it."
The file opened by itself.
A document appeared.
At the top was a date from three years earlier.
Below it was a signature.
Mara recognized it immediately.
Her own.
Her breath stopped.
"I never signed that."
Daniel looked at the screen.
Neither of them moved.
Because beneath Mara's name was another signature.
One belonging to the man who had spent the last week allowing the world to believe she was a criminal.
Daniel Whitmore.
Mara stared at the screen until the letters stopped looking like letters and became something colder.
A trap.
A warning.
A piece of a life she no longer recognized.
Daniel pulled his arm away from her grip.
"Don't touch anything."
She barely heard him.
"That is my signature."
"I know."
"No."
Her voice came out sharper than she expected.
"You don't know."
Daniel looked at her.
Mara pointed at the screen with a trembling hand.
"You see a name."
She stepped closer.
"I see the way I write my M."
Nobody spoke.
"The way I cross my t's."
Her breathing became uneven.
"I know my own handwriting."
Daniel looked back at the document.

Claire moved beside him.
"Can you tell when it was created?"
