Chương 3

The harder thing was accepting that someone you trusted might have been telling a different story while standing beside you every day.

Upstairs, Lily woke up and immediately began searching for him.

Daniel heard her small footsteps before he saw her.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

She appeared at the top of the stairs wearing an oversized shirt he had bought for her months earlier.

Her hair was messy from sleep.

She looked smaller than she had the night before.

Not physically.

Just in the way children looked when they had been forced to carry something they should never have known existed.

Daniel opened his arms.

She walked into them.

“Did you leave?”

“No.”

“You promise?”

The question made him close his eyes for a moment.

“Yes.”

She nodded as if that answer solved everything.

Children trusted promises differently than adults did.

Adults heard the possibility of failure.

Children heard the possibility of safety.

At breakfast, Lily ate cereal slowly while Daniel sat across from her pretending not to watch every movement.

She pushed the pieces around the bowl.

“Do you like this cereal?”

Daniel looked down.

“I bought it.”

She smiled faintly.

“That means no.”

He laughed quietly.

The sound surprised both of them.

It had been a long time since the house had heard him laugh before eight in the morning.

“I don’t like it,” he admitted.

“Me neither.”

They shared a serious look over the bowl.

Then Lily pushed it away.

“Can I have toast?”

“Absolutely.”

A few minutes later, Daniel was burning bread in the toaster because he had forgotten how long it took.

Lily watched the smoke rise.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“You broke it.”

He looked at the toaster.

“I did.”

She giggled.

The moment was small.

Almost painfully normal.

And that made it harder.

Because Daniel realized how many normal moments he had missed while trusting other people to protect them.

Claire appeared in the doorway while he was scraping the burnt edges away.

Her expression softened when she saw Lily laughing.

Then it disappeared.

“Can we talk privately?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Can you take your plate to the table?”

She nodded and carefully carried it away.

Claire waited until Lily was gone.

“I know you are angry.”

Daniel placed the knife down.

“I am trying not to decide everything while I am angry.”

“That sounds fair.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“It sounds fair.

It does not mean I believe you.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“I made a mistake.”

Daniel remained silent.

She looked uncomfortable with the lack of forgiveness.

“I was overwhelmed.”

“With what?”

The question seemed simple.

She did not have an answer ready.

“With everything.”

Daniel shook his head slightly.

“That is not an answer.”

Claire crossed her arms.

“You have no idea what it is like.”

“What?”

“To live here.”

He stared at her.

The sentence surprised him.

Not because it was impossible.

Because it revealed a different problem.

Claire was not only defending what she did.

She was explaining why she felt entitled to do it.

“You married into this life,” Daniel said.

“You think that means it was easy.”

“I think it means you had choices.”

Her eyes flashed.

“And Lily never made it easy.”

The room went quiet.

Daniel felt something shift.

Not because she admitted hatred.

She had not.

Because she had come close enough for him to hear it underneath the words.

“Do you hear yourself?”

Claire looked away.

“I love her.”

Daniel waited.

She did not add anything.

He believed she might even believe it.

That was the most difficult part.

People could hurt others while still convincing themselves they cared.

“Then why was she outside?”

Claire looked toward the hallway.

“I lost control.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

It was the first honest thing she had said.

And somehow it made him more worried.

Because losing control was not the same as making one bad decision.

It was admitting there was something underneath.

Before he could respond, Marcus appeared at the doorway.

He rarely interrupted.

Daniel knew immediately it mattered.

“Sorry.”

Marcus glanced at Claire.

“I found something.”

Claire’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Daniel noticed.

“What?”

Marcus held a small envelope.

“Your security system logs.”

Daniel looked at it.

“Why do you have those?”

“I asked the monitoring company for access records.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You cannot just invade my privacy.”

Marcus did not react.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were printed records from the house system.

The front door lock had been activated seven times in the last month during hours when Lily was home with Claire.

Daniel looked at the dates.

Then he looked at Claire.

“Explain.”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

And for the first time since he returned, Daniel saw something he had been waiting for.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

Not fear of what she had done.

Fear of what he was about to discover.

Daniel did not speak immediately.

He looked at the pages again, moving slowly through the dates as if a different answer might appear if he read them enough times.

The first entry was from three weeks earlier.

The front door had been unlocked remotely at 2:14 in the afternoon.

The second was a week later.

The third was two days before the storm.

Every time, Lily had been home.

Every time, Claire had been the only adult present.

“Those were accidents,” Claire said.

Her voice was quieter now.

Daniel placed the papers on the counter.

“Seven accidents?”

“I was trying to get her attention.”

“For what?”

Claire looked frustrated.

“For listening.”

Daniel almost laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“You locked a three-year-old outside because she did not listen?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Then she stopped.

She realized she had already said too much.

Daniel watched her carefully.

He had spent his life recognizing hesitation in business negotiations.

People hesitated when they were hiding numbers.

May you like

They hesitated when they were protecting themselves.

They hesitated when the truth was too expensive to say.
