Chương 7

“I didn’t know.”
Daniel searched his face.
For once, he seemed unsure whether to believe him.
Mara stepped closer.
“What company?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Mine.”
Evelyn spoke softly.
“Rebecca believed someone was using Adrian’s business to hide something.”
Claire, who had remained near the door, finally moved.
“Why didn’t this come up in any investigation?”
Everyone looked at her.
Evelyn’s expression tightened.
“Because the investigation ended before it started.”
“Why?”
“Because Rebecca died.”
The sentence was simple.
The effect was not.
Adrian looked back at the letter.
He forced himself to continue.
I told Rebecca not to involve herself.
I told her I would handle it.
She wrote that sentence with a line underneath it.
The kind Rebecca used when she was disappointed.
Adrian knew that better than anyone.
That was your mistake, she wrote.
You always believed handling something meant carrying it alone.
Daniel looked away.
The words hurt because they belonged to both men.
Father and son.
Same flaw.
Different generations.
Adrian kept reading.
If something happens to me, I need you to know that Evelyn tried to warn us.
She was not trying to destroy us.
She was trying to protect what she thought she had lost.
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
She was crying silently.
Not dramatically.
Not asking anyone to comfort her.
Just standing there with years of guilt written across her face.
Daniel noticed.
“You knew my mother wrote this.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you never showed it to me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because I was ashamed.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Everyone has a reason.”
The pain in his voice was harder to hear than anger.
“Everyone has a reason for lying.”
Evelyn accepted the accusation.
“You’re right.”
That answer seemed to unsettle him.
He had expected an argument.
Not agreement.
“I wanted to tell you,” she said.
“When?”
She looked down.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
Her voice broke slightly.
“It’s not.”
Adrian folded the letter carefully.
The discovery had not given him relief.
It had created a larger problem.
Someone had been hiding financial misconduct inside his company years ago.
Rebecca had known.
Evelyn had known.
Daniel had found them.
And now someone had tried to stop Daniel from revealing it.
“Mara,” Adrian said.
She looked at him.
“I need you to go back to the car with Claire.”
Her expression changed immediately.
“No.”
“Mara.”
“No.”
The firmness surprised even her.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“This is bigger than tonight.”
“I know.”
“Then understand why you need to be away from it.”
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at Adrian.
“That’s exactly why I’m staying.”
He frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel almost married me while carrying this alone.”
Her voice softened.
“And I need to know why.”
Daniel looked at her.
The shame on his face was obvious.
“Mara.”
She turned toward him.
“You don’t get to apologize yet.”
The words stopped him.
“You don’t get to make this easier for yourself by saying sorry and disappearing again.”
Daniel looked down.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”
“I know.”
That answer surprised him.
“But you did.”
Nobody spoke.
The truth did not need to be louder.
It was already there.
Then Adrian’s phone vibrated again.
Unknown number.
A new message.
This time, there was a photograph attached.
He opened it.
The image showed the envelope on the desk.
Taken moments ago.
Inside the warehouse.
Adrian’s face changed.
Someone was watching them.
And whoever it was had been close enough to see what they found.
Adrian stared at the photograph on his phone, unable to make sense of the timing.
The image showed the envelope sitting exactly where it had been moments earlier.
The desk.
The old office.
The letter Rebecca had written years ago.
Someone had been close enough to capture it.
Close enough to know what they had found.
Daniel saw the change in his father’s face.
“What happened?”
Adrian did not answer immediately.
He turned the phone so the others could see.
Mara stepped closer.
Her expression tightened.
“Is that from inside this building?”
“Yes.”
Claire moved toward the window.
Her eyes scanned the dark space outside.
“Everyone stay away from the glass.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent that knows where we are.”
The room changed instantly.
A few minutes earlier, they had been dealing with old secrets.
Now they were dealing with someone who was still active.
Still watching.
Still making decisions.
Adrian placed the phone on the desk.
“Security.”
Claire was already reaching for hers.
“No signal.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
She checked the screen again.
“Nothing.”
Daniel walked toward the doorway.
“I’ll check the hall.”
Adrian stepped in front of him.
“No.”
Daniel stopped.
The reaction was immediate.
The same old conflict between them appeared in a single word.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You still don’t trust me.”
“That’s not what I said.”
“It’s what you mean.”
Adrian looked at his son.
“I mean I just found out you walked into a situation alone with someone who has been hiding things from our family for years.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“She was the only person who told me the truth.”
“Was she?”
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was small.
But Adrian saw it.
So did Mara.
“She didn’t tell you everything,” Adrian said.
Daniel looked away.
“No.”
“What did she leave out?”
Evelyn remained silent.
Adrian turned toward her.
“What didn’t you tell him?”
The older woman looked exhausted.
Not from the night.
From years.
“I didn’t tell him because I was afraid he would hate me.”
Daniel gave a quiet, bitter laugh.
“You were right.”
Evelyn accepted that.
“But you deserve to know why.”
Nobody moved.
The warehouse felt suspended between two moments.
The past they had uncovered.
And the danger waiting outside.
“After Rebecca died,” Evelyn said, “I tried to investigate what she had found.”
Adrian watched her carefully.
“You told me you disappeared.”
“I did.”
“That wasn’t an answer.”
“No.”
May you like
Evelyn looked down.
“I disappeared because someone wanted me to stop asking questions.”
