Chương 10
“He asked me for money.”
Mara sat at the desk. “Who?”
“Darren Kline. Assistant security director. He wants fifty thousand.”
“For a video of Howard slapping me.”
“For the full recording. There’s more after you left.”
Mara’s attention sharpened. “What more?”
“I kept filming.”
“What happened?”
Nico’s breathing changed.
“He and my aunt argued. Evelyn said he had promised not to touch you. Howard said she should have gotten the drive while she was in the garage. Bernard told everyone not to leave until their phones were checked.”
“Did the recording capture that?”
“Some.”
“Why would Darren sell it to you if he took your phone?”
“He isn’t selling it to me. He’s selling it to you.”
“How did he get my number?”
“Everybody has your number.”
Mara disliked that this was probably true.
“Send his information to my attorney.”
“No attorneys.”
“Then no money.”
“If Bernard learns Darren copied the file, it disappears.”
“Tell Darren that fifty thousand dollars buys a meeting with my attorney or nothing.”
Nico exhaled. “You really don’t know how this family works.”
“I know exactly how it works. Somebody does something wrong, then charges everyone else for the privilege of finding out.”
She ended the call and informed Calvin, who used silence as punishment for nearly twenty seconds.
“I remembered not to promise money,” Mara said.
“You also remembered to conduct a witness interview without counsel, discuss stolen evidence, and antagonize a person who may possess it.”
“I was efficient.”
“You should put that on your tombstone.”
Priya contacted Darren through an investigator. Darren refused a formal meeting but sent a ten-second sample. It showed the floor after Mara left, broken glass scattered around Howard’s shoes.
Evelyn’s voice said, You told me she would be frightened, not hurt.
Howard answered, She was supposed to give you the drive.
The clip ended.
Priya listened twice. “This is useful and radioactive.”
“Because he stole it?” Mara asked.
“Because we do not know how he obtained it, whether it has been altered, whether a longer version exists, or what he expects beyond money. We cannot purchase evidence secretly and pretend the transaction doesn’t matter.”
“Can police get it?”
“Possibly, if Darren cooperates or they obtain legal process based on sufficient cause. That risks alerting Hanover before the copy is secured.”
Calvin tapped the table. “We give the sample to Detective Salazar with Darren’s contact information. No payment.”
“He’ll disappear,” Mara said.
“He may. We are not building your case with a private ransom market.”
Mara stood by Priya’s office window. The delivery driver across the alley had returned with smaller boxes.
“What if the video proves Howard lied?”
“Then it proves he lied about the assault and shows possible consciousness of evidence,” Priya said. “It does not prove what happened at Riverton.”
“It proves they were looking for Daniel’s drive.”
“Yes.”
“Which means it exists.”
“Or they believed it existed.”
Mara turned. “Evelyn asked me for it in the garage.”
Priya’s gaze sharpened. “Exact words.”
Mara repeated the exchange.
“When were you planning to tell us?” Calvin asked.
“I told Tessa.”
“Tessa is not a legal filing cabinet.”
Priya wrote quickly. “Evelyn may be the more important witness.”
“She won’t turn on Howard.”
“People rarely turn on someone all at once. They turn on one lie, then another.”
Detective Salazar obtained Darren’s sample and requested an interview. Darren failed to appear.
By the next morning, his apartment was empty. He had resigned from Hanover security by email and withdrawn several thousand dollars from his bank account. His phone went directly to voicemail.
Online, a second clip appeared.
This one showed Howard striking Mara.
The angle was tighter than Nico’s original recording and ended before Mara reached for the hammer. There was no audio before the impact. The account that posted it had been created that morning.
Public opinion turned with astonishing speed and very little grace.
People who had called Mara unstable now called her iconic. The golden-retriever account deleted its earlier comment and posted a purple heart beneath the new clip. A daytime program requested an interview about “surviving powerful families.” Hammer-shaped merchandise appeared before lunch.
Howard issued a statement acknowledging “brief physical contact” during a moment of extreme emotional provocation. He apologized to those distressed by the image but accused unnamed parties of distributing manipulated material.
Mara watched his statement once.
Then she vomited in the kitchenette sink.
It was not fear or satisfaction. It was the sight of his hand again, arriving without warning. Her body had stored the moment more faithfully than her mind.
She rinsed the sink and sat on the bathroom floor until the tile pattern stopped shifting.
The new clip helped her assault complaint. It also made the table destruction more widely known. Prosecutors did not dismiss the property charge. Calvin negotiated an agreement delaying the case while evidence was reviewed.
Hanover placed Howard on a temporary leave from public-facing duties. He remained chairman.
The board released a statement praising transparency.
At Riverton Tower, someone spray-painted HAMMER THEM ALL across the construction fence. The city ordered it removed before dawn.
Luis sent Mara a photograph of the graffiti.
Under it he wrote: Ellis still not mentioned.
Mara called him.
“You’re right,” she said.
“I know.”
“I’m meeting with the families’ civil attorneys tomorrow.”
Silence.
Luis had not agreed to speak with Priya. He distrusted lawyers connected to any Hanover, including Mara.
“What are you giving them?” he asked.
“Everything I have.”
“Even the release?”
“Yes.”
“Even what Daniel did?”
“Yes.”
Luis breathed into the phone. “You say yes fast.”
“I’m trying to stop saying it slowly.”
He did not respond.
Mara looked at Daniel’s notebook on the desk. “I need your original photos.”
“They’re gone.”
“You said you gave them to Daniel.”
“I did.”
“Did you send them?”
“AirDrop. At my house.”
“Then there may be a transfer record.”
“On what?”
May you like
“Daniel’s phone, if the data can be recovered. Your old phone if you still have it.”
“I traded it.”
