Chương 5

Emily stared at the document for what felt like an eternity.

The ink on the page seemed darker than it should have been.

Her father's signature sat at the bottom like a permanent mark proving that the person she trusted most had also been part of the deception.

She looked at Thomas.

"How long have you had this?"

Thomas remained silent for a moment.

"Ten years."

Emily's expression changed.

"Ten years?"

He nodded.

"I found it after the accident."

Rachel stepped closer.

"Emily, please listen before you decide what this means."

Emily turned toward her.

"What else could it mean?"

Her voice cracked.

"My father helped hide the truth."

Thomas lowered his eyes.

"He was not the person who started it."

Emily looked back at him.

"But he allowed it."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The simple answer hurt more than another excuse would have.

Emily walked toward the window.

Outside, the forest was covered in darkness.

The quiet beauty of the mountains felt almost cruel.

Everything around her looked peaceful while her entire understanding of her family was falling apart.

"My whole life was built on a lie."

Rachel shook her head.

"No."

Emily turned around.

"How is that not true?"

Rachel took a careful breath.

"Because there were still people who loved you."

Emily looked at her.

"Love does not excuse betrayal."

Rachel looked down.

"I know."

Thomas moved toward the table.

"There is something else you need to understand."

Emily gave a tired laugh.

"Of course there is."

She looked at him.

"There is always something else."

Thomas accepted the pain in her words.

"Your father did not hide the truth because he wanted to hurt you."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"Then why?"

Thomas looked at Rachel.

"Because he was protecting someone."

The room became silent.

Emily immediately noticed Rachel's reaction.

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Emily stepped forward.

"Who was he protecting?"

Rachel closed her eyes.

"Me."

The word landed harder than Emily expected.

She stared at her sister.

"You?"

Rachel nodded.

Emily felt something inside her break.

"Why would he need to protect you?"

Rachel looked away.

"Because I was the one who caused the accident."

Emily stopped breathing for a moment.

The room seemed to become smaller.

Thomas looked at Rachel with sadness.

"I told you this day would come."

Rachel wiped away a tear.

"I know."

Emily looked between them.

"What accident?"

Rachel sat down slowly.

Her hands shook as she spoke.

"The night everything changed, I was driving."

Emily felt her heartbeat increase.

"I thought Thomas was driving."

"I know."

Rachel looked at her.

"Everyone thought that."

The memory came back suddenly.

The flashing lights.

The broken glass.

The voices.

The confusion.

Emily had been young, but she remembered enough.

She remembered seeing Rachel crying.

She remembered Thomas standing away from everyone.

She remembered someone telling her that Thomas was responsible.

"But why?"

Emily whispered.

"Why would everyone blame him?"

Rachel looked at the floor.

"Because I was scared."

Emily stared at her.

"Scared?"

Rachel nodded.

"I was young, angry, and I had been drinking."

The confession was almost too much to accept.

"I lost control of the car."

Emily covered her mouth.

"And Thomas?"

Rachel looked toward him.

"He took the blame."

Emily looked at Thomas.

"Why?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"Because Rachel was your sister."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

She backed away.

"No, that does not make sense."

Thomas looked at her.

"I knew what losing her would do to you."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"So you destroyed yourself instead?"

Thomas did not answer.

Because he knew it was true.

Rachel started crying.

"I wanted to tell you."

Emily looked at her.

"But you didn't."

"I tried."

"No."

Emily's voice became stronger.

"You chose silence."

Rachel nodded.

"Yes."

The honesty made it worse.

Emily turned away.

For years, she had imagined the person responsible for destroying her family as someone cruel.

Someone who did not care.

But the truth was more complicated.

It was someone she loved.

Someone who had made a terrible choice.

Someone who allowed another person to carry the pain.

"Does Mom and Dad know?"

Thomas looked at her.

"Yes."

Emily closed her eyes.

"And Michael?"

Rachel hesitated.

Emily immediately noticed.

"Michael knew too."

Rachel nodded.

Emily felt betrayed all over again.

The list of people who knew kept growing.

Everyone had watched her carry anger and grief while holding the truth in their hands.

"Why did nobody tell me?"

Rachel's voice broke.

"Because every time I tried, I remembered your face when you lost him."

Emily looked at her.

"You thought keeping the lie alive was kinder?"

Rachel had no answer.

Thomas stepped closer.

"Your family made a terrible decision."

Emily looked at him.

"And you?"

Thomas looked down.

"I made one too."

The room became quiet.

"I thought taking the blame would protect everyone."

He looked at Emily.

"But I only created a bigger wound."

Emily looked at the document again.

The anger inside her was mixed with something else now.

Grief.

She was grieving the family she thought she had.

She was grieving the years she lost.

She was grieving the version of herself who believed she knew the truth.

"What happened after that night?"

Rachel wiped her tears.

"Your father used his influence to make sure the investigation focused on Thomas."

Emily looked shocked.

"Why would he do that?"

Rachel answered quietly.

"Because he believed protecting me protected you."

Emily shook her head.

"He protected me by making me hate someone innocent."

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

The truth was finally standing in front of them.

And it was ugly.

Hours passed as they sat in Thomas's small house.

For the first time, Emily heard every detail.

The arguments.

The fear.

The choices.

The years of regret.

Every piece of the story connected into something painful but complete.
