Chương 4

"No."

Corinne looked at Casey.

"I think I can come back and protect my daughter."

The words changed the entire room.

Even Casey looked up.

For years, Corinne had wondered if she could still be the mother Casey needed after being away so long.

Now she understood.

Being a mother was not measured by never leaving.

It was measured by what you did when your child needed you.

Ross moved toward the phone in his hand.

"You are making this look worse for yourself."

Corinne noticed.

"Why are you still recording?"

Ross said nothing.

"Why did you open the door with your phone already pointed at me?"

Still nothing.

"Why were you waiting for me to react?"

The questions landed one after another.

Gwendolyn looked uncomfortable.

Ross lowered the phone.

"I wanted proof."

"Proof of what?"

His silence answered again.

Corinne stepped closer.

"That I was dangerous?"

Ross looked away.

"That I was unstable?"

She looked toward Casey.

"That your daughter needed protection from me?"

Casey started crying harder.

Corinne immediately softened.

"No, no, sweetheart."

She sat beside her.

"I am not mad at you."

Casey wiped her eyes.

"I thought you were coming back angry."

Corinne froze.

"Why?"

"Dad said you would blame me."

The pain on Corinne's face was impossible to hide.

She looked at Ross.

"You told her that?"

Ross rubbed his forehead.

"I was trying to prepare her."

"Prepare her for what?"

"For disappointment."

The answer shocked her.

Corinne stared at him.

"You convinced our daughter I would hurt her because you wanted her to expect the worst from me."

Ross's expression hardened.

"You don't know what it was like here."

"Then tell me."

He stayed quiet.

Corinne waited.

She had faced enemy fire.

She had waited through impossible missions.

She had learned patience.

And now she used that patience against the people hiding the truth.

Finally, Ross spoke.

"After you left, Casey kept asking when you would come home."

Corinne's eyes softened.

"I know."

"Every night."

His voice changed slightly.

"Every night she asked."

Corinne looked down.

"I know."

"And I didn't know what to say."

For the first time, Ross sounded less angry and more broken.

"I was angry at you."

Corinne listened.

"I was angry that you chose the mission."

"I didn't choose it over her."

"I know that now."

The words surprised her.

Ross looked at the floor.

"But I didn't know it then."

The honesty created a different kind of silence.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something real.

Gwendolyn looked at him.

"Ross."

He ignored her.

"I started telling myself that Casey needed someone who was actually here."

Corinne nodded slowly.

"And then you let someone else become that person."

Ross looked toward Gwendolyn.

The glance lasted only a second.

But Corinne saw it.

She saw the connection.

She saw who had been influencing the situation.

Gwendolyn stepped forward.

"You are twisting everything."

Corinne looked at her.

"No."

She picked up the old photograph.

"I am finally seeing everything."

The house became quiet.

The Christmas lights continued blinking.

Outside, the storm began moving away.

But inside the house, the truth was just beginning to arrive.

Casey leaned against Corinne's side.

The little girl was exhausted.

Corinne gently brushed her hair away from her face.

"Can I ask you something?"

Casey nodded.

"Did you want me to come home?"

The question was painful.

But necessary.

Casey looked shocked.

"Of course."

Her voice broke.

"I missed you."

Corinne closed her eyes for a moment.

"Then why were you scared?"

Casey looked toward the hallway.

"Because everyone said you changed."

Corinne followed her gaze.

"Who said that?"

Casey became quiet.

Then she whispered.

"Aunt Gwen."

Gwendolyn immediately shook her head.

"She misunderstood."

But Corinne had heard enough.

Children did not create fear from nothing.

Someone planted it.

Someone repeated it.

Someone watered it until it grew.

Corinne stood slowly.

"I want to see Casey's room."

Ross looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because I want to see what else changed."

Nobody stopped her.

That was the first sign that they were afraid of what she might find.

Corinne held Casey's hand as they walked down the hallway.

The walls were decorated with Christmas ornaments.

But beneath the decorations were empty spaces where memories used to be.

The hallway seemed like a carefully edited version of her life.

When they reached Casey's bedroom door, Corinne stopped.

The small pink name sign was still there.

But everything else looked different.

She opened the door slowly.

Inside was a room that belonged to her daughter.

But not the room she remembered.

The next step will be to uncover the hidden details in Casey’s room and follow the clues that reveal what happened while Corinne was away.

Corinne opened the door slowly and stepped into Casey's bedroom, not knowing that the smallest details inside would reveal the biggest secrets hidden from her.

The first thing she noticed was the silence.

Children's rooms were supposed to feel alive.

They were supposed to carry traces of imagination, laughter, and dreams.

But Casey's room felt carefully arranged.

Too carefully.

The stuffed animals were lined up perfectly on the shelf.

The blankets were folded with sharp corners.

The toys were organized like decorations instead of things a child actually played with.

Corinne walked farther inside while Casey held her hand.

"Do you like your room?" Corinne asked softly.

Casey looked around.

The little girl hesitated.

"I used to."

Those three words made Corinne stop.

"Used to?"

Casey looked down.

"Before."

Corinne knelt beside her.

"Before what, sweetheart?"

Casey squeezed her mother's fingers.

"Before Aunt Gwen moved my things."

Corinne glanced around.

"What things?"

"My drawings."

"Where did they go?"

Casey pointed toward the closet.

Corinne slowly walked over.

The closet door was slightly open.

Inside were boxes stacked neatly against the wall.

She pulled one forward.

The label on the side read Casey's name.

Corinne opened it.

Inside were dozens of drawings.

Pictures of their family.

Pictures of Corinne wearing her military uniform.

Pictures of Casey holding her hand.
