Chương 6

"Good."

Anna looked surprised.

"You knew?"

"I hoped."

The old woman gave a tired smile.

"You are smarter than you think."

The compliment landed strangely.

Anna was used to being told she had potential.

She was less used to someone believing she had already done something right.

The door suddenly opened three inches.

A hand reached through.

Anna stepped back.

Then Lily did something unexpected.

She grabbed the metal box and threw it.

Not at the person.

At the window.

The sound of breaking glass filled the room.

Anna froze.

"What are you doing?"

Lily stared at the broken window.

"Making sure they know there is another way out."

The man outside pulled back.

A moment later, footsteps moved away.

Anna stared.

"You wanted them to think we escaped?"

"No."

Lily looked at the broken glass.

"I wanted someone outside to know we are trapped."

Anna did not understand.

Then she heard sirens.

Not police.

Not yet.

But vehicles arriving.

Multiple vehicles.

Lily closed her eyes.

"Someone called."

Anna looked at her phone.

She had not.

Raymond had not.

The men outside had not.

Then she remembered the alarm.

The emergency system.

"Who?"

Lily did not answer.

Because someone was already walking down the hallway.

A woman's voice spoke from outside.

"Anna Pierce?"

Anna felt every muscle tighten.

She knew that voice.

Not personally.

But from television.

From interviews.

From public appearances.

The door opened slightly.

Raymond moved aside.

Standing behind him was a woman in a dark coat holding a folder.

She looked to be in her fifties.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

"Lena Mercer," Lily whispered.

Anna looked at her.

"Who is that?"

Lily's face lost all color.

"Someone who should not be alive."

Nobody spoke.

The woman outside tilted her head.

"That is exactly what Carter wanted everyone to believe."

Anna looked between them.

The hallway suddenly felt much smaller.

Lena held up the folder.

"I have been trying to find you for eleven years."

Lily stepped closer.

"Why?"

The woman's expression changed.

Not anger.

Not revenge.

Something heavier.

"Because your husband did not die alone."

Lily stopped.

Anna watched the old woman's hand move toward the wall for support.

"What did you say?"

Lena looked down.

"I was there the night Michael disappeared."

The words were quiet.

Almost gentle.

"And Carter was there too."

A silence followed.

A silence so complete Anna could hear the broken glass shifting slightly beneath her shoes.

Lily whispered.

"No."

Lena did not argue.

She simply opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

A police report.

And one picture that made Lily cover her mouth.

Anna saw it only for a second.

But it was enough.

A younger Carter.

Standing beside his father.

And beside them, a third person.

Someone Anna recognized.

Someone she had not expected.

Raymond Cole.

The facility director.

Raymond looked away.

Lily stared at him.

"You knew."

Raymond's face collapsed.

"I knew part of it."

"Part?"

"I knew enough to be afraid."

Lily looked like she had aged ten years in a single second.

"All these years."

Her voice broke.

"All these years, you watched me live in that place."

Raymond swallowed.

"I thought keeping you there was keeping you safe."

Anna stepped between them.

"Safe from who?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in the hallway already knew.

The question was no longer who wanted Lily gone.

The question was who wanted her found.

Lena looked at Raymond for several seconds before turning back to Lily.

"Eleven years ago, I thought Carter had killed everyone who knew."

Raymond lowered his eyes.

"He almost did."

Anna felt the air leave the hallway.

The words were not dramatic.

Nobody raised their voice.

That made them feel more real.

Lily held onto the edge of the door.

"Why did you wait?"

Lena looked at the old woman.

"Because I was afraid."

The honesty surprised Anna.

She expected some heroic explanation.

Some story about courage arriving at the perfect moment.

Instead, Lena stood there admitting the thing most people hated admitting.

She had been scared.

"I spent eleven years telling myself I was gathering proof," Lena continued.

"Some of that was true."

She looked down at the folder.

"Some of it was just me finding better ways to avoid getting killed."

Nobody judged her.

Not even Lily.

Maybe because Lily understood fear better than anyone.

"Who are you?" Anna asked.

Lena looked at her.

"My name is Lena Mercer."

"I know that part."

The woman gave a small tired smile.

"You probably know me as the woman who disappeared."

Anna searched her memory.

The name sounded familiar.

Then it clicked.

"Wait."

She looked at the folder.

"You were an accountant."

Lena nodded.

"I worked with Michael."

Lily closed her eyes.

Another piece of the past returning.

Another person she thought was gone.

"Michael trusted you."

"He shouldn't have."

The answer was immediate.

Lena looked away.

"He trusted too many people."

The hallway remained crowded.

Oakridge staff members stood farther away, whispering.

Residents watched from doorways.

Nobody understood the details.

They only knew something unusual was happening.

A nursing home hallway had become the center of a conflict between wealthy people, old secrets, and frightened strangers.

Anna realized something uncomfortable.

Most of these people would never know the truth.

They would only know the version that appeared later.

The headlines.

The rumors.

The explanations made by people who had not been there.

She hated that.

"Lena," Lily said quietly.

"What happened that night?"

Lena's expression changed.

The question had finally arrived.

The one she had spent eleven years avoiding.

"Michael found out Carter was moving money without his knowledge."

Anna frowned.

"Carter?"

"He was young."

Lena looked at the photograph.

"But he was already learning."

She opened the folder.

"The company Carter inherited was not the company he built."

She pulled out a document.

"He used his father's connections, his father's accounts, and his father's criminal network."

Lily stared at the paper.

"And Michael tried to stop him."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

May you like

Lena hesitated.

That hesitation told Anna the answer was worse than anything she could say quickly.
