Chương 6

He had spent years pretending his anger was strength.

He had convinced himself that controlling everything meant protecting everyone.

But all he had really done was build walls around himself.

And eventually, those walls kept out the people who loved him most.

Ethan looked at the notebook.

"Did my mom write anything else for me?"

Richard opened it again.

There were several pages filled with Emily's handwriting.

Some were stories about Ethan when he was younger.

Some were memories of ordinary days.

Some were messages she hoped he would read when he was older.

Richard read silently for a moment.

Then he smiled sadly.

"She wrote about the day you learned how to ride a bicycle."

Ethan looked up.

"She remembered that?"

"She wrote that you fell three times and got back up every time."

A small smile appeared on Ethan's face.

"That sounds like me."

Richard nodded.

"Yes, it does."

Claire watched the two of them.

She saw something she never thought she would see.

A grandfather and grandson who had lost years together were finally finding a beginning.

Daniel stepped toward the doorway.

"I think there is something you all need to know."

Richard looked at him.

"About what?"

Daniel hesitated.

"About why Ethan found the room tonight."

Everyone became still.

Ethan looked confused.

"I just found it."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the hidden door.

"You were not supposed to find this room by accident."

Claire's expression changed.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small piece of paper.

"I found this near the entrance before Richard arrived."

Richard took it from him.

The paper was old.

There was a sentence written on it.

"Only the person who needs the truth will find the door."

Ethan stared at the message.

"I don't understand."

Richard looked at the words carefully.

Neither did anyone else.

But something about it felt familiar.

Not magical.

Not impossible.

Just like Emily had known her family well enough to predict what they would do.

Claire touched the paper gently.

"She planned everything."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward Ethan.

"She trusted someone would eventually do the right thing."

The boy looked down.

"Was I supposed to find it?"

Richard walked toward him.

"I think you found it because you were brave enough to look."

Ethan lowered his eyes.

"I was scared."

Richard nodded.

"Being scared does not mean you are not brave."

The boy looked at him.

Richard continued.

"Sometimes bravery is doing something while you are afraid."

Ethan seemed to remember those words.

They were the same words his mother used to tell him.

For a moment, he could almost hear her voice.

The hidden room no longer felt like a place filled with sadness.

It felt like a place where Emily had left pieces of herself behind.

Pieces that could guide them forward.

Richard carefully collected the letters and notebook.

"We need to preserve everything here."

Claire nodded.

"But there is still the matter of the documents Emily found."

Richard looked toward the old letter from his father.

The weight returned to his expression.

He knew the story was not finished.

The secrets of the Carter family were not only about emotional wounds.

They involved real choices that affected real people.

"Where are those documents?" Richard asked.

Claire was silent.

Richard noticed immediately.

"Claire."

She took a breath.

"They are not in this room."

"Where are they?"

Claire looked toward Daniel.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Richard's voice became firmer.

"Tell me."

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

"Emily gave them to someone she trusted."

Richard waited.

"Who?"

Claire answered quietly.

"Your brother."

Richard froze.

The name carried another painful memory.

Thomas Carter.

The brother who disappeared from the family years ago.

The brother Richard believed had betrayed them.

"He is alive?" Richard asked.

Claire nodded.

"He has been alive all this time."

Daniel looked at Richard carefully.

"I found him."

The room went silent.

Richard stared at him.

"You found my brother?"

Daniel nodded.

"He has been living quietly outside the city."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he asked me not to."

Richard looked away.

Another secret.

Another person who chose silence.

But this time, he did not react with anger.

He was beginning to understand why people hid things from him.

Not because they hated him.

Because they feared what would happen when the truth reached him.

"Why did Thomas leave?" Ethan asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Richard looked at the floor.

Because the answer was another piece of his own history.

"Because we fought," he finally said.

Ethan looked at him.

"Like you and Mom?"

The question was simple.

But it struck deeply.

Richard nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Claire looked at him with surprise.

Richard rarely admitted his mistakes.

But tonight was different.

"I thought I was protecting the family."

He looked at the old photographs.

"But I was protecting an image."

The words remained in the room.

Daniel spoke softly.

"Thomas has something Emily wanted you to see."

Richard turned.

"What?"

"A recording."

Claire looked shocked.

"A recording?"

Daniel nodded.

"Emily made it before she became sick."

Richard's breathing changed.

"Why didn't anyone tell me about this?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Because she wanted you to hear it when you were ready to listen."

Richard almost smiled sadly.

Another person who knew him better than he knew himself.

"Where is it?"

Daniel reached into his bag and pulled out a small device.

"It is here."

Everyone looked at the object.

A simple recording device.

Something that held the voice of someone Richard thought he would never hear again.

Ethan moved closer.

Richard looked at him.

"Are you ready?"

The boy nodded.

Richard pressed the button.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a familiar voice filled the hidden room.

A voice Richard had not heard in years.

"Hi, Dad."

May you like

Richard immediately closed his eyes.

The sound alone was enough to bring back everything he had tried to forget.
