Chương 6

Should the next segment reveal the hidden family member or focus on the final legal battle?

The signature at the bottom that did not belong to his father.

Someone else had signed the transfer papers.

Someone who was still connected to the family.

And that meant the person who started everything was still hiding nearby.

Daniel stared at the signature, trying to understand the name written beneath the faded ink.

The handwriting was different from the others.

Sharper.

More deliberate.

A signature created by someone who knew exactly what they were doing.

Eleanor moved closer.

"Who is it?"

Daniel did not answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the paper.

Then he slowly turned it around.

Everyone looked down.

The name was clear.

Thomas Whitmore.

The same uncle Margaret had accused of stealing from the family business.

The same man who had disappeared years ago after the confrontation with Robert.

The same person who had been blamed for destroying everything.

But something about the signature bothered Daniel.

Thomas had been gone for decades.

So how could his name appear on a recent ownership transfer?

Robert noticed Daniel's expression.

"What did you find?"

Daniel handed him the document.

The moment Robert saw the signature, his face changed.

"That is impossible."

Margaret looked over his shoulder.

"No."

Her voice became quiet.

"It is not impossible."

Everyone turned toward her.

"What do you mean?" Eleanor asked.

Margaret looked toward the road beyond the trees.

"Because Thomas never left."

The family became silent.

Daniel felt a cold feeling move through him.

"What are you saying?"

Margaret took a slow breath.

"He changed his name."

"He built a new life."

"But he stayed close enough to watch this family."

Robert stepped backward.

"That cannot be true."

Margaret looked at him.

"You never looked for him."

"Because you believed the story you wanted to believe."

Robert lowered his eyes.

Daniel looked between them.

"Where is he?"

Nobody answered.

Then the sound of another vehicle approaching came from the driveway.

The relatives turned toward the noise.

A black SUV slowly moved past the sheriff's vehicle and stopped near the lake house.

The driver's door opened.

An older man stepped out.

He wore a gray jacket and carried himself with confidence.

His hair was completely white.

His eyes scanned the family standing outside.

Daniel immediately knew.

He had seen those eyes before.

In old photographs.

In the faces of his father and Robert.

The man walked closer.

"Looks like everyone finally found the truth."

Robert froze.

"Thomas."

The man's expression did not change.

"Hello, brother."

Eleanor felt her anger rise.

After everything that had happened, seeing the person connected to so much pain standing calmly in front of them felt unbearable.

"You did this."

Thomas looked at her.

"I did what?"

"You destroyed this family."

Thomas smiled slightly.

"No."

"I simply took advantage of the mistakes they made."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Why?"

Thomas looked at him.

For a moment, something almost like regret appeared on his face.

"Because I was tired of watching your father get everything."

Daniel frowned.

"The house?"

"The business?"

"The family?"

Thomas laughed quietly.

"All of it."

Robert stared at him.

"You were my brother."

"And you were always the favorite."

The words revealed a bitterness that had survived decades.

Thomas continued.

"Everyone loved you."

"Everyone trusted you."

"Even when I warned them about you, nobody listened."

Margaret shook her head.

"You were never warning anyone."

"You were manipulating everyone."

Thomas looked at her.

"You always were the smartest person in the room."

"And that was exactly the problem."

Daniel studied him carefully.

"You framed my mother."

Thomas did not deny it.

Instead, he looked toward the lake house.

"I needed someone to blame."

"And she was the easiest person to remove."

Daniel felt anger building inside him.

"You made me believe she abandoned me."

Thomas shrugged.

"Your father made his own choices."

"No."

Daniel's voice became firm.

"You created the lie."

Thomas looked at him.

"You are more like your father than you realize."

The words struck Daniel.

But this time, they did not hurt.

Because Daniel finally understood something.

His father had made terrible mistakes.

But he had also spent years trying to repair them.

Thomas had spent years protecting his own pride.

The difference mattered.

The sheriff stepped forward.

"Mr. Whitmore, we need to discuss these documents."

Thomas looked at him.

"I assume you have questions."

The sheriff nodded.

"We have several."

Thomas smiled.

"I have nothing to hide."

Daniel looked at the old man.

"You have spent thirty years hiding."

The confidence on Thomas's face weakened slightly.

Eleanor held onto the original letter.

"My husband left proof."

Thomas looked at her.

"What proof?"

"The truth."

The single word seemed to affect him.

Because truth was the one thing he could not control.

Daniel opened the hidden document again.

"This transfer was illegal."

Thomas looked at the paper.

Then he laughed.

"You think a piece of paper changes everything?"

Daniel looked directly at him.

"No."

"But the truth does."

The family members behind them watched silently.

They had arrived expecting a peaceful vacation.

Instead, they had witnessed the collapse and rebuilding of their entire family history.

Robert stepped forward.

For years, he had allowed fear to control him.

But now he stood beside Daniel.

"You stole from us."

Thomas looked at him.

"You let me."

The words were cruel.

But Robert did not look away.

"Yes."

"I did."

Everyone noticed the difference.

He was no longer defending himself.

He was accepting responsibility.

"And that is something I will regret for the rest of my life."

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

Because guilt was harder to fight than anger.

Daniel looked at his father.

For the first time, he saw a man who was trying to become better instead of pretending he had never been wrong.

Margaret moved beside Daniel.

"He cannot change the past."

"But we can decide what happens next."

Daniel looked at the lake house.

May you like

A place filled with memories.

Some beautiful.
