Chương 1

"""The first thing I noticed was the silence coming from my son's bedroom.

It was the kind of silence that felt heavier than any scream.

I had learned over the years that an eight-year-old boy could fill a house with noise when he was happy, but when he became quiet, something was usually wrong.

I stood in the hallway with my hand resting on the white door, listening to the faint sound of his breathing on the other side.

The warm yellow light from his room spilled across the dark wooden floor, creating the illusion of peace inside a home that no longer felt completely safe.

I slowly opened the door and saw my son, Ethan, sitting on the edge of his bed with his head lowered.

His blue T-shirt was wrinkled, and his blue patterned pajama pants looked like he had been wearing them for hours without moving.

He was holding something tightly against his chest with both hands.

When he looked up at me, I immediately knew this was not about a broken toy or a bad dream.

His brown eyes were filled with fear.

"Dad," he whispered.

His voice was so small that I almost missed it.

I walked closer and knelt in front of him.

"What happened, buddy?"

He looked toward the corner of the room instead of answering.

The hesitation in his face made my stomach tighten.

I had seen that expression before, but never on my own child.

It was the look of someone carrying a secret too heavy for them.

"I didn't break it," Ethan finally said.

I frowned and looked at the damaged tablet in his hands.

The screen was covered with cracks, and the device looked like it had been dropped hard against something.

"I know you didn't," I said gently.

But Ethan shook his head.

"No, Dad, you don't understand."

He slowly turned the tablet around so I could see the screen.

The cracked glass reflected the bedroom lamp, but underneath the damage, I could see something that made him afraid.

"I found something on it."

My heart started beating faster.

"What did you find?"

Before he could answer, the bedroom door opened wider.

My mother, Ethan's grandmother, stood there.

She had been staying with us for several weeks while she recovered from a difficult winter.

She wore dark home clothing, and her short dark hair with gray strands was slightly messy.

But what caught my attention was not her appearance.

It was the way her face changed when she saw the tablet in Ethan's hands.

For one second, she looked terrified.

Then the fear disappeared behind a calm expression.

"Ethan," she said softly.

Her voice sounded controlled, almost too controlled.

"Why are you showing that to your father?"

My son immediately lowered his eyes.

I looked between them.

Something about the question bothered me.

It was not the question of a grandmother who was confused.

It sounded like someone who already knew the answer.

"Mom," I said slowly.

"What is going on?"

She took a small step into the room.

"Nothing is going on."

But Ethan gripped the tablet tighter.

That was when I realized he was not afraid of the broken device.

He was afraid of what was inside it.

My wife, Sarah, appeared behind my mother moments later.

Her face changed the instant she saw Ethan's expression.

She rushed toward him and dropped to her knees beside the bed.

"Sweetheart, what happened?"

Ethan looked at her, and tears slowly formed in his eyes.

Not dramatic tears.

Not the kind children cry when they want attention.

These were the quiet tears of a child who had been trying to stay strong.

"I found it when Grandma left it downstairs," he said.

Sarah looked confused.

"Found what?"

Ethan pressed a button on the damaged tablet.

The screen flickered.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a file appeared.

My mother immediately stepped forward.

"Give me that."

Her voice was sharper than before.

Everyone froze.

Ethan pulled the tablet closer to himself.

I stood up.

"Mom."

She stopped.

The room became completely silent.

The only sound was the faint hum of the lamp and the soft breathing of everyone standing there.

My mother looked at me, and for the first time in years, I saw uncertainty in her eyes.

The woman who had always seemed impossible to break looked like she was suddenly afraid of the truth.

"Dad," Ethan whispered.

I looked back at him.

"Play it."

My hands felt cold.

I did not know what I was about to hear.

I only knew that my son had been carrying this fear alone.

I took the tablet carefully from him and pressed the file.

The screen went black for a few seconds.

Then a video appeared.

The image was shaky, recorded from somewhere inside our house.

The room in the video looked familiar.

It was our living room.

The date on the corner of the screen made my chest tighten.

It was from three months earlier.

Before my mother came to stay with us.

Before anyone suspected anything was wrong.

I turned up the volume slightly.

At first, there was only silence.

Then I heard voices.

My mother's voice.

And another voice I recognized immediately.

My wife looked at me with confusion.

"What is this?"

I could not answer.

The recording continued.

My mother's voice sounded nervous.

"You promised this would stay hidden."

The other voice responded quietly.

"We had no choice."

Sarah covered her mouth.

She looked at me like she was seeing a stranger.

The video continued playing, revealing pieces of a conversation that made no sense.

They were talking about a secret from years ago.

Something connected to our family.

Something that had been hidden from me.

I looked at my mother.

She looked away.

That single movement told me more than words could.

"Mom," I said.

My voice barely sounded like mine.

"What did you hide from me?"

May you like

She did not answer.

Instead, she looked at Ethan.
