Chương 6

My eyes moved over the names.

One was a former assistant who left the company six months earlier.

Another was a consultant who had only worked with us briefly.

Then I saw the third name.

My hands stopped moving.

"Evelyn."

Daniel nodded.

"My mother-in-law?"

"Yes."

I looked away.

Of course.

It was easier to accept betrayal from an enemy.

A mother-in-law pretending to care was harder.

Because I had spent years trying to earn her approval.

I had hosted dinners.

Remembered birthdays.

Listened to her complaints about everyone who disappointed her.

I thought she disliked me because I was not warm enough.

Because I was too focused on work.

Because I was too independent.

I never considered that she might have been studying me.

Looking for weaknesses.

"What else?"

Daniel opened another document.

"There is a medical appointment request."

"For me?"

"Yes."

"With who?"

"A private psychiatric evaluator."

I felt my chest tighten.

"I never agreed to that."

"No."

Daniel folded his hands.

"Which means someone else attempted to arrange it."

The room went quiet.

From the other room, I heard Mateo opening a cabinet.

A normal sound.

A child looking for something.

It reminded me that the world was still moving.

People still needed snacks.

Phones still needed charging.

Laundry still needed folding.

Even when your life changed in a single morning, ordinary things did not stop asking for attention.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

"How is he?"

I followed his gaze.

"Scared."

"Does he understand what happened?"

"More than he should."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Children often understand tension before they understand facts."

I looked down.

"I spent years thinking he couldn't communicate."

Daniel did not answer immediately.

Then he said, "Maybe he was communicating."

That sentence stayed with me.

Not speaking was not the same as saying nothing.

Mateo had been telling us something for years.

We just did not know how to listen.

My phone vibrated.

I expected fear.

Instead, I felt anger.

The message was from Richard.

I opened it.

Claire, I heard you left the house.

I hope you understand how concerning this looks.

You disappeared with Mateo without explanation.

Please call me so we can handle this calmly.

I read it twice.

Then I handed the phone to Daniel.

He looked at the message.

"What do you think?"

I almost answered immediately.

I almost said it was manipulative.

But Daniel had taught me not to rely only on instinct.

"He sounds worried."

"Yes."

"And?"

Daniel looked at me.

"What else?"

I stared at the message.

The wording bothered me.

Not the concern.

The presentation of concern.

He did not ask if Mateo was safe.

He did not ask if I was okay.

He said I disappeared.

He said I looked concerning.

Like he was already preparing an audience.

"He is building a story," I said.

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

A few minutes later, Richard called.

I let it ring.

Then it stopped.

Then it started again.

Mateo walked into the room.

"Is Dad calling?"

I looked at him.

"Yes."

"Are you going to answer?"

I did not know what to say.

Children deserved honesty.

But they also deserved protection from adult battles.

"Not right now."

Mateo nodded.

He did not ask why.

That hurt more.

He had learned not to ask questions.

That evening, Daniel helped me contact the security company.

The cameras at my house had been accessed remotely three times in the past month.

Two accesses came from Richard's credentials.

The third came from an unknown device.

The security company could not identify the person.

But they confirmed one thing.

The access happened from inside the property.

I sat on the edge of the guesthouse bed after Daniel left.

Mateo was asleep in the next room.

Maria was downstairs making tea.

I held the memory card from Richard's SUV in my hand.

The one piece of evidence I had not examined.

The one thing he had tried to recover.

I looked at the small piece of plastic.

Then I made a decision.

Whatever was on that card had been important enough for Richard to panic.

And I was done waiting for him to decide what I was allowed to know.

I placed the memory card on the table and stared at it for several minutes before touching it.

There was something unsettling about how small it was.

A tiny piece of plastic that could hold a conversation capable of changing everything.

I found an adapter in my laptop bag and connected it.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a folder appeared on the screen.

The name was simple.

Vehicle Archive.

Inside were dozens of video files organized by date.

My first instinct was to open the most recent one.

Then I stopped.

I had spent the entire day reacting.

Running.

Discovering.

Being shocked.

This time, I wanted to choose my next step carefully.

I copied the files onto an encrypted drive first.

Daniel had warned me that evidence was fragile.

People could argue about where it came from.

They could question whether it had been changed.

They could attack the person holding it instead of the information itself.

So I made copies.

I documented the time.

I wrote down exactly where I found the card.

It felt strange doing something so methodical while my entire personal life was collapsing.

But somewhere beneath the fear, the part of me that had built a company was waking up.

I opened the newest video.

The screen showed the interior of Richard's SUV.

The angle was wide enough to capture the front seats and part of the back.

At first, nothing happened.

The vehicle was parked.

The audio contained only the distant sounds of traffic.

Then the passenger door opened.

Evelyn entered.

She looked exactly the way she always looked.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly composed.

Like someone who believed the world was a place designed to accommodate her.

Richard entered a few seconds later.

May you like

They did not know the camera was recording.

That alone made my hands tighten around the edge of the table.
