Chương 5

The question seemed simple.

But it carried months of unanswered ones behind it.

“I needed time.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“Time for what?”

Daniel looked at Lorraine.

Then back at his sister.

“To make a decision I did not know how to make.”

Claire felt her chest tighten.

“About our grandmother’s home?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt because it was the first honest thing anyone had said all night.

And it was also the thing she least wanted to hear.

Daniel looked at the floor for several seconds before meeting her eyes again.

“I should have called you.”

Claire almost smiled, but there was no humor in it.

“Yes.”

The simplicity of the answer seemed to hurt him more than anger would have.

He rubbed his hand across his face.

“I know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I know.”

“That is not the same as fixing anything.”

Daniel looked away.

The security guards shifted near the doorway, suddenly aware that they were standing inside a private family wound.

Martin quietly stepped closer.

“I can give everyone some space if you need to talk.”

Claire looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was steady.

“I do not want another conversation where things happen privately and I find out afterward.”

Daniel flinched.

The words were not loud.

They did not need to be.

“You think I am hiding something.”

Claire looked at the apartment.

At Lorraine.

At the mug.

At the missing photographs.

“I think something has been happening without me knowing.”

Daniel was silent.

That silence was the closest thing to confirmation she had received.

Lorraine moved toward him.

“Daniel, this is becoming unnecessarily hostile.”

Claire noticed the way she said his name.

Not like someone speaking to an acquaintance.

Like someone reminding him of a role he had agreed to play.

Daniel noticed it too.

His shoulders tightened.

“Lorraine.”

The warning in his voice was quiet.

But it changed something.

Claire looked between them.

“You two have had this conversation before.”

Daniel did not answer.

“Daniel.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“Claire, please.”

The word carried exhaustion.

Not anger.

Not guilt exactly.

Something more complicated.

She hated that part of her still wanted to protect him.

Even now.

Even after weeks of silence.

“Please what?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Please let me explain.”

Claire laughed once.

A small, tired sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

She put the phone down slightly but did not stop recording.

“Explain.”

Daniel took a breath.

“Our grandmother left the apartment to the estate.”

“I know.”

“But there were debts.”

Claire frowned.

“What debts?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Medical expenses.”

Claire shook her head.

“I handled the bills after she died.”

“Not all of them.”

“Which ones?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to frustrate her.

“Daniel.”

“I found out later.”

“Found out what?”

He looked at Lorraine.

Claire followed his eyes.

The movement made her stomach tighten.

“Why are you looking at her?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she helped.”

The room became quiet.

Claire stared at him.

“Helped with what?”

Daniel walked farther into the apartment.

He looked exhausted.

Not like someone who had won an argument.

Like someone who had been losing one for a long time.

“After Grandma died, I found out there were expenses I did not know about.”

“What expenses?”

“Private care.”

Claire shook her head.

“She had insurance.”

“Not everything was covered.”

“Then why did you not tell me?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

A flash of shame crossed his face.

Because he had an answer.

And he knew she would not like it.

“I thought you would take over.”

Claire went still.

The honesty hurt.

“Take over?”

“You always do.”

The words came out before he could stop them.

Immediately, regret appeared on his face.

Claire looked at him.

There it was.

The thing Lorraine had been circling around all evening.

The thing Daniel had believed but never said.

“You think I control everything.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I think you try to fix everything.”

“That is not what you said.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“It is not.”

Lorraine folded her arms.

“This is exactly why I told him he needed someone who would listen.”

Claire turned toward her.

“You told him that?”

“I supported him.”

“You barely know me.”

“I know enough.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Is that what happened?”

Daniel did not respond immediately.

The delay hurt more than the answer might have.

“Daniel.”

He finally spoke.

“I was overwhelmed.”

The anger inside Claire softened slightly.

Not disappeared.

Softened.

Because that was the first thing he had said that sounded human.

Not like a defense.

Not like a prepared explanation.

“I was dealing with Grandma’s death,” he continued.

“I was trying to handle the apartment.”

“I was trying to work.”

“I was trying to figure out what happened to her finances.”

His voice became quieter.

“And every time I thought about calling you, I imagined the conversation.”

Claire stared at him.

“What conversation?”

“The one where you told me what I should have done.”

The words hurt because there was truth inside them.

A painful amount.

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Daniel noticed.

“You do not even have to say it.”

“Say what?”

“That you would have handled it differently.”

Claire looked away.

Because she probably would have.

She would have made spreadsheets.

She would have called attorneys.

She would have asked questions until someone gave her answers.

That did not mean she would have abandoned him.

But maybe Daniel had believed it did.

The realization did not excuse what he had done.

It only made the betrayal harder to understand.

Martin quietly cleared his throat.

“I am sorry to interrupt.”

Everyone looked at him.

“But I still need clarity on the apartment situation.”

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded document.

Claire watched his hands.

They were shaking.

Not much.

Just enough.

Martin accepted the paper.

“What is this?”

“An occupancy agreement.”

Claire looked at Lorraine.

May you like

“So it is real.”

Lorraine lifted her chin slightly.
