Chương 4

He looked uncomfortable, like he already regretted being there.
“Mr. Carter,” he said again.
Daniel swallowed.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at Thomas.
Then he looked at me.
“My name is Alan Brooks.”
Nothing about the name meant anything to me.
But Daniel reacted.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
His shoulders lowered slightly.
Like he had been hoping this person would never appear.
Thomas noticed too.
“Mr. Brooks, I’m going to ask you to explain why you entered a private residence without permission.”
Alan shifted his weight.
“I didn’t break anything.”
“That was not my question.”
The attorney’s calm voice made the room feel smaller.
Alan looked down at the folder.
“I was told Daniel lived here.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is he?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa stepped inside behind us.
“Daniel?”
The uncertainty in her voice was new.
She was no longer standing beside him as a partner.
She was watching him like a person trying to figure out whether she had made a terrible decision.
Alan looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“You didn’t tell them?”
Nobody answered.
I felt Lily move closer to me.
Children sense tension even when adults pretend they do not.
“Mom,” she whispered.
I bent slightly.
“We’re okay.”
It was a promise I wanted to believe.
Alan cleared his throat.
“I’m sorry for coming this way.”
Thomas crossed his arms.
“You should be.”
“I tried calling.”
Daniel looked away.
“I blocked your number.”
The sentence came quietly.
But everyone heard it.
I looked at Daniel.
“What is going on?”
He rubbed his face.
For the first time since I arrived, he looked tired instead of angry.
Not innocent.
Not misunderstood.
Just tired.
“Emily, this isn’t what you think.”
I almost laughed.
That sentence had followed me through too many years.
People used it when they wanted time before the truth arrived.
“Then tell me what it is.”
Daniel looked at Alan.
Alan looked back.
Neither wanted to speak first.
Thomas stepped between them.
“I suggest everyone stop attempting to control the order of information and start being honest.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” Thomas replied.
“I understand that multiple people entered a property owned by my client, one person is hiding information, and another person claims to have documents involving you.”
Alan opened the folder.
“I have copies.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Alan.”
The warning was clear.
Alan ignored it.
He removed several pages and handed them to Thomas.
Thomas scanned the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed slightly.
That was the first thing all evening that truly frightened me.
Thomas had remained steady through the divorce papers, the confrontation, and the discovery of Daniel opening my mail.
But now he looked concerned.
“What is this?” I asked.
Thomas did not answer immediately.
That delay made my stomach tighten.
“Mrs. Carter, these appear to be business documents.”
Daniel looked at him.
“They have nothing to do with Emily.”
Alan shook his head.
“They have everything to do with her now.”
I looked at Daniel.
“What business documents?”
He remained silent.
I had spent years learning the different versions of Daniel’s silence.
There was the silence when he was embarrassed.
The silence when he was angry.
The silence when he was planning how to convince someone he was right.
This was different.
This was the silence of someone who knew a door had opened and could not be closed again.
Thomas turned a page.
“Mr. Carter, did you create a company called Carter Strategic Holdings?”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
I felt confused.
Daniel had told me his consulting company was the only business he owned.
He had always complained about money being tight.
He had delayed vacations.
He had told me we needed to be careful.
Thomas continued.
“And did this company acquire financial interests in several commercial properties?”
Daniel’s silence answered before he did.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You told me your company was struggling.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“It was complicated.”
“No.”
Her voice became sharper.
“You told me we were building something together.”
He looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa.”
She stepped back.
That name sounded different coming from her now.
Less affectionate.
More disappointed.
Alan looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
I did not know why he apologized.
He was not the person who had hurt me.
“What does this have to do with me?”
Alan hesitated.
“Your aunt.”
The room went quiet.
Margaret.
Even after death, she was still changing the direction of my life.
“What about her?”
Alan glanced at Thomas.
Thomas nodded.
“You may continue.”
Alan placed another document on the table.
“Margaret Whitmore discovered irregularities involving several investments connected to your husband’s company.”
Daniel immediately spoke.
“That’s not true.”
Alan looked at him.
“You asked me to destroy records.”
My breath stopped.
Vanessa stared at Daniel.
“What?”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“That was taken out of context.”
Alan laughed once.
It was not a happy sound.
“I spent three years helping you hide your mistakes.”
Thomas looked up.
“Hide what mistakes?”
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“This is ridiculous.”
Nobody moved.
He looked at me.
“Emily, please.”
The fact that he said my name instead of defending himself told me everything.
He wanted me to save him.
That was the part that hurt most.
Even now, after everything, some part of him still believed I would protect him from consequences.
I shook my head slowly.
“No.”
His expression changed.
“What?”
“I have spent eleven years cleaning up problems you created.”
I looked toward Lily and Noah.
“I’m not doing it anymore.”
Daniel looked away.
The room became painfully quiet.
A few minutes earlier, I had thought the worst thing I would learn was that my husband wanted another woman.
Now I was standing inside my own house discovering that I might never have known the person I married at all.
Thomas collected the documents.
May you like
“We need to move this conversation somewhere appropriate.”
Alan nodded.
