Chương 13

My eyes moved toward the hotel window.

“What does everything mean to you?”

She did not answer.

I already knew.

The house she did not own.

The allowance she had not earned.

The driver.

The club memberships.

The vacations.

The constant performance of being a wealthy matriarch whose son provided everything.

“Did you believe him?” I asked.

“Yes.”

That answer was almost a whisper.

“And that is why you called me.”

“Yes.”

Not because she was sorry.

Not because she had finally recognized what she had done to me.

Because Daniel had threatened the structure that kept her comfortable.

It should have made me furious.

Instead, I felt something colder.

Useful information rarely arrived from pure motives.

“I’m going to give you instructions,” I said.

“I don’t take instructions from you.”

“Then hang up.”

She said nothing.

“Do not destroy anything.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“Do not write on anything.”

“I’m not a child.”

“Do not remove pages, reorganize them, photograph them, text them, email them, or show them to anyone else.”

“Why not photograph them?”

“Because I said so.”

Rachel’s text appeared.

Good enough.

Evelyn muttered, “You are enjoying this.”

“No.”

I looked at my bruised reflection in the dark television.

“I’m really not.”

“What happens now?”

“Rachel will contact Claire.”

“Why Claire?”

“Because the folder is in her apartment.”

“I brought it there.”

“And I am not arguing chain of custody with you tonight.”

“What does that even mean?”

“It means leave it where it is.”

Claire spoke up.

“I would love to not be involved in this.”

“I know,” I said.

“Can somebody please remove it from my dining table?”

“Soon.”

Rachel texted.

I can send investigator with evidence bags, but need consent and clear handoff.

I read it twice.

“Claire, is the folder physically in your apartment?”

“Yes.”

“Are you willing to let Rachel’s investigator come collect it from Evelyn if Evelyn agrees?”

Claire answered immediately.

“Yes.”

Evelyn did not.

“Evelyn?”

“I want a copy.”

Rachel’s response appeared before I could ask.

We can scan after intake if appropriate.

“You can ask Rachel after it is preserved.”

“I want protection.”

There it was.

“What kind?”

“I don’t know.”

“That is not something I can promise.”

“You can stop the allowance.”

“Yes.”

Her breath caught.

I hated the satisfaction I felt.

It was small and mean and human.

“You already did, didn’t you?”

“I stopped funding future payments.”

“You vindictive little—”

“Careful.”

Claire said, “Mom.”

Evelyn stopped.

I waited.

When she spoke again, the old superiority had thinned.

“What am I supposed to live on?”

I almost laughed.

The question was so extraordinary that no answer seemed large enough.

“You have your own assets.”

“Not enough for the house.”

“What house?”

“My condo.”

“You told everyone Daniel bought it for you.”

“He helped.”

“How much?”

Silence.

“How much, Evelyn?”

“I don’t know.”

“You know.”

“Emily.”

“How much did you pay?”

“Nothing at closing.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

“Who owns it?”

“EBR Holdings.”

My eyes opened.

Rachel’s message appeared instantly.

That matters.

“What did the condo cost?”

“About one point four.”

“And where did EBR get that money?”

“I told you.”

“No.”

My voice became very quiet.

“You told me Daniel moved money through EBR.”

Evelyn did not answer.

“Did company money buy your condo?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did money from my contributions buy it?”

“I don’t know.”

Her voice cracked.

“For once in your life, stop saying that.”

“I don’t know because Daniel handled everything.”

“Then start remembering.”

Claire interrupted.

“Emily.”

“What?”

“She’s crying.”

I almost said good.

The word rose cleanly in my throat.

I swallowed it.

“Put the phone on speaker.”

A click.

The room on their end sounded larger.

“Evelyn,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Rachel’s investigator is coming for the folder.”

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“You are going to let them take it.”

Silence.

“And tomorrow,” I continued, “you are going to give Rachel every bank statement, invoice, email, text, and document you have involving EBR.”

Evelyn gave a brittle laugh.

“And why would I do that?”

“Because if Daniel used your company to move money, the truth will come out eventually.”

I looked at my swollen cheek.

“The only decision left for you is whether you are the person hiding it or the person who hands it over.”

She did not answer.

Claire’s refrigerator clicked off.

The sudden quiet felt enormous.

Then Evelyn said, “I want my own lawyer.”

Rachel texted one word.

Good.

“Yes,” I said.

“You should get one.”

That seemed to unsettle her more than resistance would have.

“You’re not going to recommend someone?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because our interests may not be the same.”

“They aren’t.”

“At least we agree on something.”

She almost laughed.

I heard it start and die.

Then my phone vibrated with an incoming call.

Daniel.

I stared at his name.

Another message from Rachel appeared.

Do not answer.

I declined it.

Three seconds later, Daniel sent a text.

I know where you are.

Every muscle in my body tightened.

Rachel was still connected on the second line.

“I just got a message from Daniel.”

“What does it say?”

I read it.

Her voice changed instantly.

“Do not leave the room.”

I stood and went to the door without thinking.

“Don’t open it either.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“Call hotel security.”

“I don’t know if he’s here.”

“Call anyway.”

Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker from Claire’s apartment.

“What happened?”

I ignored her.

Another message arrived.

We need to talk face to face.

Then another.

You have no idea what your lawyer is doing.

I took screenshots.

A fourth message appeared.

If you involve the bank, you destroy us both.

My heartbeat slowed instead of speeding up.

There it was.

Not apology.

Not love.

Not even fear for the marriage.

The bank.

I read the message aloud.

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn said, very softly, “He told me the same thing.”

“What?”

May you like

“That if you found out, you would destroy all of us.”

I stared at Daniel’s words on the screen.
