Chương 13

“I should have.”
Daniel stared at me.
He had expected defense.
So had I.
Arthur nodded once.
It did not absolve me.
It simply made the room more honest.
Denise asked, “What other documents are involved?”
Miriam stepped forward.
“A purported physician letter concerning Evelyn’s cognitive capacity.”
Arthur turned sharply.
“What?”
Miriam continued.
“It was sent by Daniel to Julian as part of the financing materials.”
Daniel said, “That is not established.”
“It was in the email package.”
“The provenance is not established.”
“Julian retained the original.”
Daniel looked at Denise.
“You’re allowing opposing counsel to characterize evidence?”
Denise said, “She is not opposing counsel.”
“Not yet.”
Miriam smiled without warmth.
“That part can be arranged.”
I almost told her not to.
Then I didn’t.
Arthur asked, “Which physician?”
I said, “Dr. Feldman.”
He looked confused.
“Our marriage counselor.”
Vanessa whispered, “Oh my God.”
Denise’s eyes narrowed.
“Did Dr. Feldman write it?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel said, “He didn’t.”
Arthur looked at him.
“How do you know?”
Daniel’s face tightened.
He had walked into the same trap twice.
“I know the document was generated from a template.”
“By whom?”
“An outside consultant.”
“Kessler?”
No answer.
Denise wrote something.
Then she closed the legal pad.
“I am advising an immediate suspension of Daniel’s authority over foundation operations pending investigation.”
Daniel laughed.
“You cannot be serious.”
Arthur said, “I am.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“You suspend me tonight and everyone downstairs knows before dessert.”
Arthur stood.
“Then perhaps we skip dessert.”
“You will destroy donor confidence.”
“No.”
Arthur’s voice remained quiet.
“You used foundation resources to stage a fake assault involving your wife.”
“It was not fake.”
Vanessa stood.
“Yes, it was.”
Daniel looked at her.
She stepped away from the sofa.
“You told me where to stand.”
“Because security—”
“You told me when to fall.”
He stopped.
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“You told me she would grab me.”
“I believed she might.”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at him with tears in her eyes and something steadier underneath them.
“You needed her to.”
Daniel’s face emptied.
The sentence belonged to her, not me.
That made it stronger.
Arthur looked at Denise.
“Call the rest of the board.”
Daniel moved toward the door.
Arthur stepped into his path.
“You’re not going downstairs.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You planning to physically stop me?”
“No.”
Arthur glanced at Claire.
“But if you go downstairs, we tell eight hundred people exactly why the board asked you not to.”
Daniel stood motionless.
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
I saw fear before he turned it facedown.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Nothing.”
Noah’s laptop chimed at the same moment.
He frowned.
Then he looked up at me.
“The Miami lender just filed a default notice.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Daniel reached for Noah’s laptop.
Noah pulled it back.
“Don’t.”
“What does it say?”
“You know what it says.”
“I want to see it.”
Noah turned the screen toward Denise instead.
She read quickly.
“Payment default?”
“Covenant breach,” Noah said.
“Triggered by what?”
“Failure to provide required collateral support by today.”
Arthur looked at Daniel.
“Today?”
Daniel said nothing.
That was the answer.
The gala had not merely been convenient.
It had been his deadline.
If I appeared unstable in public, if the board panicked, if lawyers could be persuaded that the trust needed emergency protection, Daniel believed he might reach the collateral before the lender acted.
He had built my humiliation around a banking calendar.
Something inside me went quiet.
Not numb.
Clear.
I asked Noah, “What happens now?”
He read farther.
“They reserve all remedies.”
“In English.”
“They can accelerate.”
“How soon?”
“Not necessarily tonight.”
Daniel said, “Exactly.”
Noah continued.
“But if they believe the borrower misrepresented collateral availability, they may move much faster.”
Every eye turned toward Daniel.
He looked suddenly older.
Not wiser.
Just older.
Arthur said, “Did they receive the false trustee consent?”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“No.”
Noah looked at him.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because Julian was the only person who got it.”
“Then why was today the collateral deadline?”
Daniel’s silence lasted too long.
Noah’s expression changed.
“There’s another document.”
Daniel sat down.
Caroline whispered, “Of course there is.”
I felt tired beyond anger.
“What did you send the Miami lender?”
Daniel looked at me.
“A representation that trust support was expected.”
“Signed by whom?”
“Me.”
“That much was true?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell them I had approved it?”
“No.”
“Did you imply it?”
He looked toward the window.
Miriam said, “Daniel.”
He flinched at her voice.
“Yes.”
The word barely carried.
Arthur lowered himself back into his chair.
Helen stared at the floor.
Mark muttered something about disclosure obligations.
Denise began typing on her phone.
Downstairs, the quartet stopped.
A moment later, applause drifted faintly upward.
Guests were gathering.
Normal people in good clothes were accepting champagne while an institution they trusted began coming apart nineteen floors above them.
I asked Arthur, “What are we doing about the gala?”
He looked at Denise.
She said, “Canceling now creates its own questions.”
Daniel jumped in.
“Exactly.”
Denise held up a hand.
“I wasn’t agreeing with you.”
He sat back.
“We need to separate the charitable event from Daniel as quickly as possible.”
Arthur looked at me.
“Can you host?”
I almost laughed.
“No.”
“You’ve chaired it for years.”
“I can physically stand at a podium.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“No.”
The honesty surprised me again.
I looked down at my hands.
“I don’t think I can walk into that room and pretend everything is fine.”
Helen said, “Then don’t pretend.”
We all looked at her.
She shrugged.
“Say there has been a governance issue.”
Mark frowned.
“That invites speculation.”
“Speculation is already downstairs drinking our champagne.”
Claire glanced at her phone.
“She’s right.”
Arthur asked, “How bad?”
Claire hesitated.
“The clip is circulating beyond the board now.”
Daniel stood again.
“Who leaked it?”
Nobody answered.
May you like
His voice rose.
“Someone in this room knows.”
