Chương 6

He had been building something.

A system.

A version of the company where nobody could challenge him.

The letter continued.

You will want to confront him.

Do not.

A person who believes they are losing control becomes more dangerous when they feel cornered.

Wait.

Collect.

Protect yourself.

Then act.

At the bottom was a sentence that made me stop.

There is something Adrian does not know.

I never transferred my remaining voting rights to him.

I hid them.

I read that line twice.

Then a third time.

My voice was barely audible.

"Rachel."

"What?"

"Eleanor kept her voting rights."

There was a pause.

"Are you sure?"

"She says she hid them."

Rachel exhaled slowly.

"That changes everything."

I looked at the flash drive.

"What is on this?"

"I don't know."

"You need to be careful opening it."

"I know."

But the truth was, I did not want to wait.

Waiting was what had allowed Adrian to get this far.

Waiting was what I had done while he quietly built a world where I disappeared.

I carried the envelope downstairs.

Mara looked up from the kitchen counter.

She immediately noticed my face.

"What happened?"

I placed the papers down.

"Eleanor knew."

Mara wiped her hands on a towel.

"Knew what?"

I hated saying it out loud.

"That Adrian was dangerous."

Mara stared at me.

The anger that crossed her face was not directed at me.

It was directed at the person who had done this.

"I am going to call someone."

"Who?"

"Someone who can make him regret breathing."

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

"That is not how laws work."

"I didn't say it was legal."

"Mara."

She sighed.

"Fine."

She sat down.

"But I am allowed to imagine it."

That was the first time I had laughed since the crash.

A small laugh.

A painful one.

But real.

Later that night, Rachel came over with equipment to examine the flash drive.

She refused to connect it directly to my computer.

"Why?"

"Because if Adrian had access to your devices, we cannot assume your system is clean."

The words reminded me how little control I had.

Rachel noticed.

"Hey."

I looked at her.

"You are thinking about everything he took from you."

I did not answer.

"You still have choices."

I looked at my broken hands.

"I can barely hold a cup."

"You can still make decisions."

It was not the same.

But it mattered.

Rachel connected the drive through a separate device.

A folder appeared.

Three files.

Financial records.

A video.

And a document titled "Transition Plan."

The name alone made my stomach turn.

Rachel opened the financial records first.

They showed payments.

Dates.

Approvals.

Signatures.

The deeper we looked, the clearer the pattern became.

Adrian had not stolen money randomly.

He had created a trail designed to make the company appear healthier than it was.

He moved losses.

He disguised debts.

He created temporary profits.

Enough to impress investors.

Enough to earn trust.

Enough to make himself look brilliant.

"He was building a reputation on borrowed time," Rachel said.

I stared at the screen.

"No."

She looked at me.

"What?"

"He was building a future where he would never be blamed."

The document revealed more.

There were plans for restructuring.

Plans for ownership changes.

Plans for removing certain board members.

And near the bottom was a list.

My name was there.

Rachel went quiet.

I read the sentence beside it.

Spouse incapacitation scenario.

The room seemed to shrink.

Mara stood behind me.

"What does that mean?"

Rachel did not answer immediately.

She read further.

Then she closed the document.

"It means he prepared for exactly what happened."

Nobody spoke.

The refrigerator hummed.

A car passed outside.

Someone nearby was laughing.

Normal life continued.

I hated normal life.

Because my entire world had changed and nobody outside this house knew.

The video file was the last one.

Rachel looked at me.

"Are you sure?"

No.

I was not.

But I nodded.

The video opened.

Eleanor appeared on screen.

She was sitting in her office.

The same office where she had built the company.

She looked older than she had when we met.

Not weak.

Just tired.

"Lena," she said.

"If you are seeing this, I failed to stop him."

My throat tightened.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

"I need you to know something about Adrian."

She paused.

"He was not always this person."

That surprised me.

I expected anger.

A warning.

Something simple.

Instead, Eleanor looked sad.

"When he joined the company, he was ambitious. He was intelligent. He was also afraid."

The image flickered slightly.

"He grew up believing that losing meant becoming invisible."

I stared at the screen.

For a moment, I remembered Adrian years earlier.

The young executive who stayed late every night.

The man who worried about disappointing everyone.

The man who once admitted he was terrified that people would discover he was not as capable as they thought.

Eleanor continued.

"Fear does not excuse what someone does with it."

Her voice became firmer.

"But understanding it matters because Adrian will never believe he is the villain."

That sentence stayed with me.

Because she was right.

People like Adrian did not wake up thinking they were cruel.

They created explanations.

They built stories where they were the victim.

The video continued.

"There is one more thing you need to know."

Eleanor looked away briefly.

Then back.

"Vanessa is not loyal to Adrian."

Rachel and I looked at each other.

"What?" I whispered.

Eleanor continued.

"She is protecting herself."

The screen froze for a moment.

Then the video played again.

"Vanessa has information that can destroy him."

I leaned closer.

"Why?"

Eleanor's face filled the screen.

"Because she helped him build the plan."

The room went silent.

"Then she realized she was next."

The video stopped.

Nobody moved.

May you like

For a few seconds, the only sound in the room was the faint clicking of the external drive still connected to Rachel's device.

Vanessa had helped Adrian build the plan.
