Chương 6

In his place stood a man she knew intimately and barely knew at all.

“I had payroll.”

Ryan continued.

“I had suppliers threatening liens.”

“On whose property?”

“Mine.”

“Then you should have lost yours.”

He stared at her.

The cruelty of the sentence hit Claire immediately.

She did not take it back.

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“You think I don’t know that?”

“I think you decided Mom should pay instead.”

“I thought I could fix it before anybody was hurt.”

Margaret glanced at the red marks on her arm.

Ryan saw.

His face folded briefly.

“I didn’t know Mom was doing that.”

Diane looked up.

“You knew she was accusing me.”

“I didn’t tell you to put your hands on her.”

“You told me she was threatening everything.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“You said if she called Claire, we were finished.”

Claire looked from one to the other.

“What happened today?”

Diane’s eyes stayed on Ryan.

“Margaret found a transfer notice.”

Margaret nodded.

“It came in the mail.”

“You missed one,” Daniel said.

Diane flinched.

Margaret continued.

“I called the bank.”

Claire turned toward her.

“You did?”

“They wouldn’t tell me everything because I couldn’t answer one of the security questions.”

“What question?”

“The name of my first car.”

Daniel frowned.

“You know that.”

Margaret looked embarrassed.

“I gave them the model instead of the make.”

Claire almost laughed.

Her mother shrugged.

“It was a Ford Fairlane.”

Daniel said, “You’ve told us that approximately nine thousand times.”

“Yes, well, apparently the bank wanted Ford and I said Fairlane.”

The ridiculousness of it broke something in the room.

Daniel let out a short breath through his nose.

Claire smiled for half a second.

Even Margaret’s mouth twitched.

Ryan did not.

Then Margaret’s expression hardened again.

“The woman at the bank told me I should come into a branch with identification.”

“So you were going to?”

“I told Diane.”

Diane nodded slowly.

“She called me.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked ashamed now.

“Because I still thought she was my friend.”

Diane’s eyes closed.

Claire felt the sentence strike harder than anything said before it.

Margaret continued.

“She came over and told me there was no need to go to the bank.”

“What happened then?”

“She said I was getting worked up over another mistake.”

Diane interrupted.

“I tried to keep her calm.”

“You tried to take the letter.”

Margaret’s voice rose.

“I wouldn’t give it to you.”

“And you started accusing me.”

“Because you knew what account I meant before I showed you the paper.”

Claire looked at Diane.

There was one of the clues her mother had seen before anyone else.

Diane rubbed both hands over her face.

“I panicked.”

“What did you do?”

Margaret answered.

“She grabbed my wrist.”

Diane whispered, “You tried to leave.”

“I was going to the bank.”

“You were in no condition to drive.”

“I had my purse.”

“You were shaking.”

“Because you were frightening me.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“And the trash bin?”

Margaret looked toward it.

Her voice became smaller.

“She took the transfer notice.”

Diane nodded.

“I wanted to destroy it.”

“You put it in the trash?”

“Yes.”

Margaret’s fingers tightened around the edge of the stool.

“I reached for it.”

Claire understood.

Diane had not simply pushed Margaret toward the bin as punishment.

There had been evidence inside it.

“Where is the notice?”

Everyone looked at the open trash bin.

Daniel moved first.

He pulled the container away from the cabinet and looked inside.

Coffee grounds, paper towels, vegetable peelings, and a torn envelope were visible near the top.

He reached for a pair of yellow dishwashing gloves hanging beside the sink.

Claire almost told him not to touch anything.

Then the doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

It rang again.

A firm knock followed.

“Police,” a man called from the front entry.

Ryan’s shoulders dropped.

Diane stared at her lap.

Claire looked at her husband.

For one second, he looked like he might run.

Then he sank onto the stool beside his mother.

Daniel peeled off the gloves without having touched the trash.

“I’ll get them.”

Claire nodded.

Margaret caught his sleeve.

“Tell them about the paper first.”

“No.”

She looked toward Claire.

“I want to tell them.”

Claire sat beside her.

“Then you will.”

Margaret drew one slow breath.

The sound shook on the way out.

Claire reached for her hand.

This time Margaret let her take it.

Two uniformed officers entered behind Daniel, followed by a female paramedic carrying a medical bag.

The older officer looked at the people around the island, then at the documents, the medication bottles, the open purse, and the trash bin.

“Who called?”

“I did.”

Claire stood.

The officer nodded toward Margaret.

“And who was assaulted?”

Margaret lifted her chin.

“I was.”

Diane made a small sound beside Ryan.

The officer looked at her.

Margaret squeezed Claire’s hand once and released it.

Then she pointed toward the trash bin.

“And before anyone throws anything away,” she said, “there is something in there they were trying very hard to make disappear.”

The older officer raised one hand toward Daniel before he could move.

“Nobody touches it.”

Daniel nodded and stepped back.

The female paramedic set her bag beside Margaret’s stool.

“My name is Elena.”

She crouched until her eyes were level with Margaret’s.

“Can I check you over while they sort this out?”

Margaret glanced at Claire.

Claire said nothing.

Margaret looked back at the paramedic.

“Yes.”

Elena took Margaret’s wrist gently.

“What hurts?”

“My shoulder.”

“Which side?”

“The left.”

“Any trouble breathing?”

“No.”

“Chest pain?”

“No.”

“Headache?”

Margaret hesitated.

“A little.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Elena noticed.

“Did you hit your head?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“I am seventy, not unconscious.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“That helps.”

The older officer introduced himself as Officer Martinez and gestured toward his younger partner.

“This is Officer Bell.”

Bell took out a small notebook.

Martinez looked at Claire.

“You called us?”

“Yes.”

May you like

“Tell me what you saw, just what you personally saw first.”

Claire glanced toward Margaret.
