Chương 13

Daniel’s voice changed instantly.

“Do not respond.”

A second message appeared.

“Another one.”

“Read it.”

Claire swallowed.

“‘Tell your father the box belongs to Victor Hale.’”

Daniel went silent for one beat.

Then his voice hardened.

“Screenshot both messages and forward them to me without replying.”

Claire did it.

“Done.”

“Now turn off message previews.”

“Why?”

“So anyone watching your screen from a distance gets less information.”

Claire changed the setting.

“I thought you said evidence doesn’t care.”

“It doesn’t.”

“You do.”

He ignored that.

“Stay where you are.”

“I’m in a NICU consultation room.”

“Stay there.”

“I have a daughter thirty feet away.”

“Then stay on that floor.”

Claire looked through the window toward the bassinets.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

Daniel exhaled.

“I’m heading back to you.”

“Why?”

“Because Hale just made direct contact.”

“Through a burner number?”

“Likely.”

Claire almost objected to the word, then let it pass.

“What does he want from the box?”

“That is what we need to find out.”

“Dad knows.”

“Yes.”

“So make him tell you.”

“That is becoming easier.”

Claire heard something in his tone.

“What changed?”

“Your father’s attorney just withdrew.”

“Why?”

“He learned who may be connected to the threats.”

Claire gave a dry laugh.

“Suddenly procedure has feelings.”

“Lawyers have malpractice insurance.”

Daniel ended the call.

Claire sat alone for another minute.

Then she pushed the wheelchair back toward the NICU.

Her daughter was sleeping beneath the warm light.

A nurse helped Claire position her arm through the opening.

The tiny fingers curled around hers again.

“Your family has terrible timing,” Claire whispered.

The nurse pretended not to hear.

Claire stayed like that until Maya called.

“She’s alive.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Chloe?”

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

“Concussion, stitches, fractured wrist.”

“Anything else?”

“She’s lucky.”

“Is she awake?”

“Barely.”

“Did she say what happened?”

Maya lowered her voice.

“Ethan hit her.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“Where is he?”

“She doesn’t know.”

“What happened in Red Hook?”

“She says Ethan followed her there.”

“Why was she there?”

“She was meeting someone.”

“Who?”

“Your father.”

Claire opened her eyes.

“Dad?”

“Apparently he texted her after she found the documents and told her he’d explain everything if she brought them.”

“Why Red Hook?”

“Storage unit.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

“What storage unit?”

“Your father had one under another company name.”

“Of course he did.”

“Chloe says Ethan showed up before Richard did.”

“Then Dad never arrived?”

“No.”

“What did Ethan want?”

“The documents.”

Claire looked down at her daughter.

“And the blood?”

“Chloe’s.”

“Did Ethan leave her there?”

“Yes.”

Maya paused.

“She thinks he panicked when she stopped responding.”

Claire’s grip tightened.

“Where are the documents?”

“That is the good part.”

“There’s a good part?”

“She didn’t bring the originals.”

Claire almost laughed.

“What did she bring?”

“Copies.”

“Where are the originals?”

Maya said, “In a locker at Penn Station.”

Claire stared at the incubator.

“Why Penn Station?”

“She said she figured people hide things in movies in train stations because there are too many people and not enough parking.”

Despite everything, Claire smiled.

“That sounds like Chloe.”

“She wants to talk to Daniel.”

“I’ll tell him.”

“One more thing.”

Claire’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

“Chloe says the documents prove your father used the trust to secure loans from Hale.”

“Personal loans?”

“Some.”

“And the rest?”

“Westbridge moved money through property deals.”

Claire looked toward the hallway.

“What does that have to do with my penthouse?”

“Your father pledged future control of it as part of collateral.”

Claire went very still.

“He pledged something he didn’t own.”

“Yes.”

“And when Hale wanted payment, Ethan was supposed to get me to sign it over.”

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

Not jealousy.

Not merely entitlement.

Debt.

Fear.

Years of cowardice dressed up as family obligation.

“Did Chloe know before the wedding?”

“Not all of it.”

“How much?”

“She knew Ethan expected the apartment.”

“She thought your parents had promised it to him.”

Claire looked at the sleeping baby.

“Why did she marry him?”

Maya was quiet.

“She said she kept telling herself the wedding would calm him down.”

Claire said nothing.

“She knows how that sounds.”

“It sounds familiar.”

Maya understood.

“Yeah.”

The call ended.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.

He looked more tired than before.

Claire showed him Maya’s messages.

He read quickly.

“Chloe’s already giving a statement.”

“And the locker?”

“Secured.”

“The box?”

“Also secured.”

“Dad?”

Daniel sat across from her.

“Talking.”

“Finally.”

“What changed his mind?”

“Hale’s message to you.”

Claire’s mouth tightened.

“He got scared.”

“Yes.”

“Not when I hit the floor.”

“No.”

“Not when Chloe went missing.”

“No.”

“When Hale threatened him.”

Daniel did not soften it.

“Yes.”

Claire looked through the glass.

Her daughter’s chest rose steadily.

“What did Dad say?”

Daniel folded his hands.

“He admitted he misused trust assets.”

“How much?”

“More than twelve million over the years.”

Claire stared at him.

“He stole twelve million dollars.”

“He says he intended to restore it.”

“That is a sentence people use after they don’t.”

Daniel nodded.

“He borrowed from Hale after early losses.”

“And Westbridge?”

“A laundering and asset-transfer network Hale controlled through intermediaries.”

“Dad worked for him?”

“Not formally.”

“But enough.”

“Enough.”

Claire looked down at her hospital bracelet.

“What was in the safe-deposit box?”

“Records.”

“Only records?”

“Mostly.”

“And the velvet pouch?”

Daniel hesitated.

Claire noticed.

“What?”

“A watch.”

She looked up.

“Gold?”

“Yes.”

Her grandfather’s watch.

The one her mother said had been sold.

Claire gave a soft, stunned laugh.

“Of course.”

Daniel continued.

“The box also contained original trust documents, promissory notes, and correspondence between your father and Hale.”

“Why keep evidence against himself?”

“Leverage.”

Claire looked at him.

“Against Hale?”

“Against everyone.”

“That sounds more like my father.”

Daniel did not disagree.

“What happens to Ethan?”

“Police have a warrant for his arrest related to both assaults.”

“Both?”

“You and Chloe.”

Claire looked back through the glass.

“Will they find him?”

“They already did.”

She turned.

“Where?”

May you like

“At your parents’ apartment.”

Claire stared at him.
