Chương 3

Powerful men rarely accepted someone else’s decision without a reason.

She wondered what his reason was.

She wondered if she wanted to know.

A security employee approached the group carefully.

“Mr. Moretti, the police are outside.”

Martin looked relieved.

The relief lasted only a second.

Adrian saw it.

So did Elena.

“You called them?” Adrian asked.

Martin straightened.

“Of course.”

“You wanted them here?”

“I want the truth established.”

Adrian looked at him for a long moment.

“That’s an interesting choice of words.”

The police officers entered a moment later.

They were not dramatic.

They were not movie versions of authority.

They were two tired-looking detectives carrying the weight of too many late nights and too many people lying to their faces.

The younger detective spoke first.

“We received a report of financial fraud.”

Martin immediately stepped forward.

“This woman had access to our accounts.”

Elena almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because she could not believe he still sounded so certain.

The detective looked at her.

“Your name?”

“Elena Voss.”

“Relationship to the organization?”

“Financial compliance consultant.”

Martin interrupted.

“Former consultant.”

Elena turned toward him.

That was new.

He had fired her without telling her.

The detective noticed.

“You terminated her today?”

Martin hesitated.

“After discovering irregularities.”

“When did you discover them?”

“Earlier this afternoon.”

“Before or after the transfer?”

Silence.

It was brief.

Barely noticeable.

But it existed.

Elena saw it.

Adrian saw it.

The detective saw it too.

“Mr. Hale?”

Martin looked annoyed now.

Not nervous.

Annoyed.

Like the conversation had stopped following the script he prepared.

“I would need to check the exact timing.”

The detective nodded slowly.

“That’s usually when people need to check something.”

Victor stepped forward.

“This can be handled through our legal representatives.”

The detective looked at him.

“And you are?”

“Victor Lang.”

“And your involvement?”

“I represent the foundation.”

The detective glanced at his notes.

“That’s not what I asked.”

A few people in the room looked away.

Elena almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then she remembered standing in front of everyone while they watched her lose her reputation.

The feeling disappeared.

The detectives asked for statements.

Guests were separated.

Phones came out.

People who had ignored Elena all night suddenly wanted to tell her they had always thought something felt wrong.

She hated that.

Not because they were lying.

Because some of them probably believed it.

People liked being close to the truth after someone else had paid the price for finding it.

Adrian stayed near the windows while the room slowly emptied.

He did not interfere.

That surprised her.

She had expected him to take control.

Instead, he watched.

Waiting.

Elena approached him.

“You’re not going to explain?”

“No.”

She frowned.

“That’s your answer?”

“For now.”

“That’s not helpful.”

“No.”

He looked toward the detectives.

“It’s honest.”

She folded her arms.

“You keep doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Acting like honesty is some kind of favor.”

Adrian looked back at her.

“It usually is.”

The answer bothered her because she understood it.

People lied when the truth cost them something.

And Adrian Moretti looked like a man who had spent years paying for truths other people avoided.

“You knew Victor before tonight,” she said.

“Yes.”

“From where?”

“A long time ago.”

“That doesn’t answer anything.”

“It’s not supposed to.”

Elena stared at him.

She wanted to be angry.

She was angry.

But beneath it was something else.

Curiosity.

And she hated curiosity because it made people careless.

Her phone buzzed.

She pulled it from her pocket.

Three missed calls from her landlord.

Two messages from a former coworker asking if the rumors were true.

One notification from a local news account.

Her stomach tightened before she opened it.

A headline was already spreading online.

FINANCIAL CONSULTANT ACCUSED IN CHARITY FUND DISPUTE.

Her photo was attached.

A picture from her company profile.

A picture where she looked professional and trustworthy.

A picture that now made her look guilty.

Adrian saw her expression.

“What?”

She turned the phone toward him.

His face changed.

Not because of the article.

Because of the speed.

“Too fast,” he said.

“What?”

“The story moved before the investigation started.”

Elena looked at the screen.

“People report things.”

“Not like this.”

“You’re saying someone leaked it?”

“I’m saying someone prepared it.”

She looked back at the headline.

The comments were already filling.

Some defended her.

Most did not.

Strangers were deciding what kind of person she was.

A familiar humiliation returned.

Only this time it was larger.

“It’s over,” she whispered.

Adrian heard her.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

His voice softened slightly.

“But I know what it looks like when someone wants you to believe it’s over.”

Elena looked away.

For a moment, the ballroom was almost empty.

The flowers on the tables were beginning to wilt under the warm lights.

A server quietly collected abandoned glasses.

Someone near the entrance laughed about something unrelated.

The world had already started moving on.

That was the strangest part.

A person’s life could split open, and everyone else still had somewhere to be.

“I have to go home,” Elena said.

Adrian nodded.

“I’ll have someone drive you.”

“No.”

“I expected that answer.”

“Then why offer?”

“Because you’re walking into a situation where someone knows how to find you.”

She froze.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian did not answer immediately.

That silence was worse than the words would have been.

Finally, he said, “It means tonight was not the attack.”

Elena stared at him.

“What was it?”

He looked at the folder still pressed against her side.

“A warning.”

Her grip tightened.

“To me?”

His eyes stayed on hers.

“No.”

A pause.

“To whoever thought they could use you.”

The detectives called her name from across the room.

Elena looked away for only a second.

When she looked back, Adrian was already watching the entrance.

Not the police.

Not the guests.

The person standing outside the glass doors was a woman Elena recognized only after several seconds.
