Chương 1

"""The Hidden Request That Exposed the Truth Behind a Powerful Man's Silent Household
The first thing Matteo Moretti noticed was not the scratch on the marble, but the way everyone in his kitchen had stopped breathing.
The missing money from his private office had brought him home earlier than expected, and the silence waiting for him at the entrance felt more suspicious than the empty envelope he had found upstairs.
He stood in the doorway with his phone still in his hand, listening to the quiet hum of expensive appliances and the distant movement of staff members who suddenly seemed afraid to make a sound.
Then he saw the little girl standing beside the staff entrance, holding a stuffed rabbit against her chest as if the worn fabric could protect her from the room around her.
“Why is she apologizing to my floor?” Matteo asked.
His voice was not loud.
That was what made people pay attention.
Four-year-old Lily looked up for only a second before her eyes dropped again.
The white orthopedic brace on her right leg pressed against her small shoe, and her fingers tightened around the rabbit’s ear.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Moretti,” she whispered.
Her voice was so soft that Matteo almost missed it.
“My brace.”
The answer should have been simple.
A child had scratched a marble floor.
A repair could be ordered.
A worker could be called.
Money could fix almost anything in Matteo’s world.
But the expression on the faces around him told him this was not about a piece of stone.
Anna, the housekeeper, moved closer to Lily immediately.
She did not look at Matteo like an employee looking at her employer.
She looked at him like a mother deciding whether a powerful man was safe.
“Lily, come here,” Anna said gently.
The girl took a small step but stopped when her brace made a faint clicking sound against the marble.
Matteo noticed the hesitation.
He noticed the embarrassment.
He noticed that the child was more afraid of the floor than of him.
That bothered him more than he wanted to admit.
Behind them, Evelyn Crane remained near the kitchen island with her hands folded neatly in front of her.
The household manager had spent eight years running Matteo’s estate with perfect discipline.
She never raised her voice.
She never forgot an appointment.
She never allowed mistakes to remain visible.
Today, however, she was too still.
Matteo had learned a long time ago that people revealed themselves most clearly when they were trying not to.
“Who told her to apologize?” he asked.
Nobody answered immediately.
The silence stretched.
Anna glanced toward Evelyn.
Evelyn’s expression barely changed.
“She damaged something,” Evelyn finally said.
“That wasn’t my question.”
The room became uncomfortable.
Norah, Matteo’s assistant, stood near the hallway holding a clipboard against her chest.
She had arrived minutes earlier with documents from his office because Matteo had asked her to help trace the missing funds.
Now she looked like she regretted walking into the kitchen at all.
Matteo looked down at the floor.
The scratch was small.
Almost invisible.
A thin mark across the polished marble near the staff entrance.
He crouched slowly, ignoring the expensive suit he was wearing and the uncomfortable attention of everyone watching him.
His fingers moved near the damaged area without touching it.
Then he saw something strange.
There were older scratches beneath it.
Several of them.
Not one accident.
Not one mistake.
A pattern.
The newest mark from Lily’s brace had simply revealed what had already been hidden.
Matteo’s face changed.
Not dramatically.
Not with anger.
Something quieter moved across him.
Suspicion.
“Who knew about this?” he asked.
Evelyn looked toward the counter instead of answering.
That small movement was enough.
Matteo stood.
“Norah.”
She stepped forward.
“I brought the file you asked for.”
“Not that one.”
She swallowed.
Then she opened the clipboard and removed a folded document she had kept underneath the financial papers.
“I found this when I was checking the account records.”
She handed it to him.
The paper was ordinary.
A few printed pages.
A signature.
A request form.
A maintenance approval.
But Matteo read it carefully.
The request was for an accessibility adjustment near the staff entrance.
A safer path.
A small modification to prevent someone with mobility issues from struggling on the marble surface.
The request had been denied.
The reason listed was cost.
The attached restoration account code showed charges connected to marble repairs that had never been completed.
Matteo looked at the date.
Then he looked at Lily.
Then he looked back at Evelyn.
The missing money from his office suddenly felt connected to something much smaller and much uglier.
Not a grand betrayal.
Not an enemy attack.
A decision made quietly by someone who believed nobody would question it.
“What is this?” he asked.
Evelyn finally looked at him.
“It was handled.”
“That means what?”
“It means there were other priorities.”
Anna let out a quiet breath.
The sound was small, but Matteo heard it.
Other priorities.
He had heard those words his entire life.
People used them when they wanted to make cruelty sound practical.
When he was younger, Matteo had believed power meant never being ignored.
Over time, he learned the opposite.
The most dangerous things often happened because powerful people stopped looking.
He folded the document once.
Evelyn’s eyes followed the movement.
“Mr. Moretti, this is not what you think.”
“Then tell me what I should think.”
She opened her mouth but paused.
For the first time in years, Matteo saw uncertainty on her face.
Not guilt.
Not yet.
Something closer to fear.
“That request came from staff,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Staff members make many requests.”
“Yes.”
“And not all of them can be approved.”
Matteo looked at Lily’s brace.
The little girl was still holding the rabbit.
Still standing near the doorway.
Still waiting to find out whether she had done something wrong.
“I agree,” Matteo said quietly.
May you like
“Not everything can be approved.”
His eyes moved back to Evelyn.
