Chương 3

"Put her on."

"Daniel—"

"Put her on."

The silence lasted long enough that he thought Mara might refuse.

Then Lily's voice came through.

"Hi."

She sounded exhausted.

"Hey."

"I know what you're going to say."

Daniel looked at the dashboard.

"I don't think you do."

"You think I should have caught it."

"No."

"I should have checked the invoices again."

"Lily."

"I should have—"

"You should stop."

She went quiet.

The wind moved through the open space between cars outside. Somewhere behind him, someone dropped a box and apologized.

Small sounds.

Normal sounds.

That almost made it worse.

"The person who did this wanted you to think that," Daniel said.

Lily did not answer immediately.

"You don't know that."

"No. I don't."

He hated admitting it, but pretending certainty was how people got trapped.

"But I know you. And I know you don't wake up planning to hurt people."

Her breathing changed.

Just slightly.

"Daniel."

"Yeah?"

"I saw something before the event."

The sentence landed differently.

"What?"

"I don't know if it matters."

"Tell me anyway."

Lily hesitated.

"I saw Mara meeting someone."

Daniel glanced toward the building.

"When?"

"About an hour before the donors arrived."

"Who was it?"

"I don't know."

"What did they look like?"

"I don't know."

The frustration came quickly, and Daniel heard it in his own voice before he could stop it.

"Lily, I need more than that."

"I know."

Her answer was quiet.

"I know. That's why I didn't say anything."

Daniel softened.

"What do you mean?"

"I thought I was imagining it."

"Why?"

"Because Mara looked like she knew the person."

A cold feeling moved through him.

"Did she?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"And then she looked around like she hoped nobody saw her."

The call ended ten minutes later after Mara took the phone back and told Daniel they needed to meet somewhere private.

They chose a diner three blocks away because it was open late and because nobody important ever seemed to notice people sitting in booths under bad lighting.

Daniel arrived first.

He ordered coffee he did not want.

The waitress placed the mug down and walked away before he could say thank you.

He watched the steam disappear.

A man at the counter complained about his breakfast order. Two teenagers whispered over a shared plate of fries. A woman near the window repaired the strap on her purse with a small sewing kit.

The world had the strange ability to continue.

Daniel had always found that insulting.

Then he realized he had relied on it his entire life.

Mara arrived twenty minutes later wearing the same dress from the event.

She looked like someone who had forgotten she was allowed to be tired.

"You shouldn't have come here," she said.

"Then where should I have gone?"

She sat down.

"I don't know."

That was the second time that night someone had given him an answer they hated.

Daniel pushed his coffee aside.

"Start from the beginning."

Mara looked toward the window.

"The documents are incomplete."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning someone took selected pages."

"Which pages?"

"The ones showing transfers."

"Transfers to where?"

She looked at him.

"An account connected to a company nobody at the foundation recognizes."

Daniel leaned back.

"And you knew about it?"

"No."

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

Mara noticed him noticing.

"I knew there were questions about one vendor," she said. "I did not know about the account."

"Who was the vendor?"

Mara looked down.

"Mercer Consulting."

The name meant nothing for half a second.

Then it did.

Daniel felt his expression change.

"Mercer?"

"Yes."

"Michael Mercer?"

Mara's eyes lifted.

"Your brother?"

The question sat between them.

Daniel thought about the photograph he had found months earlier, the one he had never shown anyone. The document hidden in his brother's old files. The name that had appeared where it should not have.

His brother had been dead for nearly a year.

But somehow his shadow had reached into a charity scandal Daniel was now standing inside.

"What aren't you telling me?" Mara asked.

Daniel looked away.

That question hurt because it was fair.

"I don't know yet."

Mara studied him.

"You have something."

"I have a question."

"About Michael?"

Daniel nodded.

For the first time all night, Mara looked less like a leader protecting an organization and more like someone remembering a person she had lost.

"I didn't know your brother well," she said.

"But you knew him."

"Everyone in this city knew someone who knew him."

"That's not an answer."

"No."

She looked at her hands.

"It's not."

Daniel waited.

Finally she said, "Michael came to me three months before he died."

The diner noise seemed to fade.

"What did he want?"

Mara swallowed.

"He wanted to warn me about someone inside the foundation."

"Who?"

Before she could answer, her phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

The color left her face.

"What?"

She turned the phone toward him.

It was a message from an unknown number.

Attached was a photograph.

Daniel recognized the image before he understood why.

It showed Michael Mercer standing outside the charity office.

Alive.

And beside him was Lily.

The timestamp was from the night before the scandal broke.

Neither of them had been supposed to meet.

The Day a Quiet Man Found the Evidence That Could Destroy Everything He Built

The first thing Daniel Mercer saw when he opened the office door was his own name printed on a termination notice taped to the glass.

He stood there for several seconds with his coffee cooling in his hand, watching employees inside pretend not to look at him.

The building on West Franklin Street had always smelled like printer paper, old carpet, and the expensive soap someone in accounting kept buying for the bathroom.

That morning it smelled different.

It smelled like people waiting to see what happened next.

May you like

Daniel touched the edge of the paper but did not remove it.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Marcus Vale, the chief operating officer of the company Daniel had helped build for eleven years.
