Chương 6

Wanting to help was not the same as knowing how.

Dana sighed.

"I can request a short delay."

"How long?"

"Twenty-four hours."

"That's it?"

"That's what I can ask for."

I nodded.

"Ask."

She walked away.

Lily watched her leave.

"Am I going somewhere?"

I crouched beside her.

"Not tonight."

Her eyes searched mine.

"Are you sure?"

The question was almost identical to the one she had asked in my store.

Did I do something bad?

Are they mad?

Are you sure?

She had spent two days looking for certainty from strangers.

I wanted to give her some.

But I also knew better than to make promises I could not keep.

"I know you're staying here tonight."

She studied my answer.

Not perfect.

Not comforting.

But honest.

"Okay."

The next morning, Sarah Carter opened her eyes.

The hospital called at 6:12.

I was already awake.

I had barely slept.

Not because of Lily.

I told myself it was because of the unanswered questions.

The missing picture.

The note.

Evan.

But there was another reason.

For the first time in years, someone else's life had entered my thoughts without permission.

"Mr. Hale?"

The nurse sounded tired but relieved.

"Sarah Carter is awake."

I sat up.

"Is she okay?"

"She is conscious."

"Can I speak with her?"

There was a pause.

"She asked for Lily."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Can she see her?"

"Yes."

A few minutes later, I was driving back to the hospital.

Rain tapped lightly against the windshield.

The city looked normal.

People walked with coffee cups.

Buses moved through traffic.

A man in a suit argued into his phone outside a building.

Everyone was carrying something invisible.

Everyone had a story nobody else could see.

When I entered Sarah's room, Lily was already there.

She stood beside the bed holding her mother's hand.

Sarah looked exhausted.

Pale.

Confused.

But awake.

Her eyes moved from Lily to me.

The moment she saw me, something changed.

Not relief.

Not gratitude.

Fear.

"Who are you?" she whispered.

I opened my mouth.

Before I could answer, Sarah looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

And said the words that made the entire room go still.

"Why is Evan's picture missing?"

Sarah's eyes moved between me and her daughter.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The machines beside her bed continued their quiet rhythm.

A nurse walked past the open doorway and laughed softly with someone in the hallway.

The ordinary sounds made the room feel stranger.

Because inside it, a woman who had nearly died was staring at me like I was connected to something she feared.

"Lily," Sarah whispered.

The little girl stepped closer.

"Mommy?"

"Where is it?"

Lily looked confused.

"The picture?"

Sarah's fingers tightened around the blanket.

"Yes."

"I couldn't find it."

Sarah closed her eyes.

Not from pain.

From disappointment.

A small reaction.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

"Sarah," I said carefully, "my name is Ethan Hale."

She opened her eyes again.

"I know."

That surprised me.

"You know me?"

She looked toward Lily.

Then back at me.

"She told me."

I glanced at Lily.

The girl looked down.

"What did she tell you?"

Sarah swallowed.

"She said she found someone who would help."

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

I moved closer to the bed.

"We found a note."

Sarah went completely still.

"What note?"

"It was in your apartment."

Her face changed.

"Where?"

"Near the table."

"Did you read it?"

Dana stepped into the room before I answered.

"Sarah, I'm Dana Brooks."

Sarah looked at her.

"Social services?"

Dana nodded.

"I need to ask some questions."

Sarah looked exhausted.

"About what?"

Dana glanced at me.

"About your daughter's safety."

Sarah looked back at Lily.

The fear in her face was immediate.

"Did something happen?"

"No," Dana said.

"Then why are you asking?"

Because nobody ever asked questions without a reason.

That was something Sarah understood.

I watched her try to sit up.

The effort made her wince.

Lily immediately reached for her.

"Mommy, don't."

Sarah looked at her daughter.

"I'm okay."

But she wasn't.

Not completely.

The nurse had explained that her body had been through something serious.

She was awake, but awake did not mean recovered.

Dana pulled a chair closer.

"Sarah, we need to understand your current situation."

"My current situation?"

"Your support system."

Sarah gave a weak laugh.

"I have one."

"Who?"

"My sister."

"Dana?"

"Rachel."

"Does she live nearby?"

"No."

"Has she cared for Lily before?"

Sarah hesitated.

"Not for long periods."

Dana nodded.

"And Lily's father?"

The room changed.

It was subtle.

But everyone noticed.

Sarah looked at Lily.

"Can we talk about this later?"

Dana's voice stayed calm.

"We need to know who has legal responsibility."

Sarah looked away.

"Evan isn't involved."

"Why?"

"Because he left."

"When?"

"Two years ago."

"Where is he now?"

"I don't know."

That answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Not because it was false.

Because it was rehearsed.

I noticed Sarah's hand moving toward the blanket.

Her fingers touched the edge and stopped.

A nervous habit.

A small thing.

But I had spent years negotiating contracts.

People revealed more in what they avoided than what they said.

"Sarah," Dana said, "did Evan have contact with Lily recently?"

"No."

"Did he contact you?"

"No."

"Then why did he leave a note?"

Sarah looked at her.

"What note?"

The question was different.

Not confused.

Alarmed.

I stepped forward.

"The note was signed Evan."

Sarah's face lost color.

"What did it say?"

Dana looked at me.

I answered.

"It said you couldn't keep pretending this wasn't happening."

Sarah stared at the floor.

Then she whispered something I almost did not hear.

"He found us."

Lily looked up.

"Mommy?"

Sarah immediately forced her expression to soften.

"No, sweetheart."

But the damage was done.

Children noticed fear faster than adults wanted to admit.

"What does that mean?" Dana asked.

Sarah shook her head.

May you like

"I need to know where the picture is."

Her focus returned to the missing photograph.
