Chương 4

Not the hesitation of someone hiding a lie.

The hesitation of someone deciding whether the truth was safe.

"Pictures," she said.

"What kind of pictures?"

"Of us."

Daniel swallowed.

"Us?"

Lily nodded.

"Before Emma."

The room seemed smaller.

Evelyn watched him carefully.

She saw the change in his face before anyone else did.

"You knew," Daniel said quietly.

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"No."

"You knew Claire had children?"

"No."

"You knew there was something."

Her eyes moved away.

"I knew there was something you never talked about."

Daniel looked at the floor.

That was different.

And somehow worse.

Because Evelyn had not hidden a child from him.

She had lived beside a man who was hiding from himself.

A knock came at the door.

Marcus entered without waiting for permission.

He had worked for Daniel for eleven years and had learned when normal rules mattered and when they did not.

This was one of the second kind.

His usual calm expression was gone.

"Daniel."

"What did you find?"

Marcus looked at Lily, then at Emma, then back at Daniel.

"The security logs."

Daniel waited.

Marcus rubbed the side of his face.

"Yesterday afternoon, a child was outside the building."

Lily looked down.

"Was she alone?" Daniel asked.

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

A painful silence followed.

"Why wasn't I told?"

"Because security categorized it as a welfare issue."

Daniel stared at him.

"Welfare issue?"

Marcus did not defend the phrase.

"The guard contacted building management."

"And?"

"They told him to call local services."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"Did anyone call?"

Marcus hesitated.

"No record of it."

The answer landed harder than anger would have.

"Who was the guard?"

"Tom Reyes."

"Is he still working?"

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"He left two hours ago."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Left?"

"His shift ended."

"Find him."

Marcus nodded.

"I already started."

Daniel almost smiled at the old habit.

Marcus always anticipated the next step.

But today anticipation felt useless.

There were things happening faster than plans could handle.

Lily watched Marcus carefully.

"Are you his friend?"

Marcus looked surprised.

"Mine?"

She nodded.

Daniel glanced between them.

Marcus softened.

"Yeah."

Lily considered that.

"Do you leave too?"

The question stopped him.

Marcus was not a man who was easily affected.

He had handled layoffs, lawsuits, and hostile negotiations without showing much emotion.

But he looked away before answering.

"No."

It was not a confident answer.

It was a promise he was trying to make.

Lily seemed to accept it.

That frightened Daniel.

A child should not have to measure promises.

Evelyn picked up her wedding bouquet from where it had fallen earlier.

Several white roses had broken from the arrangement.

She stared at them.

"I need to understand something."

Daniel looked at her.

"Did you know?"

The question was not about Lily.

Not exactly.

It was about whether he had been living a lie.

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Did you know Claire was pregnant?"

He did not answer immediately.

That was enough.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Daniel."

"I thought she was going to tell me."

"Why didn't she?"

The question had no anger in it.

Only exhaustion.

He looked toward Lily.

"Because we fought."

Evelyn waited.

Daniel had rarely talked about that time.

Not because he was protecting Claire.

Because he was protecting the version of himself he wanted to believe.

"I was twenty-nine," he said.

The room stayed quiet.

"I had just sold my first company. Everyone around me told me I had finally made it."

He gave a small, humorless laugh.

"I believed them."

He sat down slowly.

"Claire wanted a normal life."

Evelyn leaned against the wall.

"And you didn't?"

Daniel looked at his hands.

"I thought normal was something people settled for when they weren't ambitious enough."

The honesty surprised even him.

"I told her I couldn't slow down."

Lily looked at him.

Not accusing.

Just listening.

"She said she wasn't asking me to slow down," Daniel continued.

"She said she was asking me to notice that there was a life happening beside me."

The memory came back with uncomfortable clarity.

Claire standing in the apartment doorway.

Her arms crossed.

A suitcase near the wall.

The last argument.

Not dramatic.

Not explosive.

That was what made it worse.

Real endings were often quiet.

"I left," Daniel said.

Evelyn looked down.

"You left her."

He nodded.

"I thought we both needed space."

"And then?"

Daniel's phone vibrated on the table.

Nobody moved.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Lily saw it.

Her face changed.

"That's her."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who?"

"The lady who found us."

He picked up the phone.

For a moment, he considered not answering.

Then he pressed accept.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice came through.

"Is this Daniel Whitmore?"

"Yes."

There was a pause.

"My name is Sarah Collins."

Daniel stood.

"How do you know me?"

"I found a little girl outside a bus station three days ago."

His grip tightened around the phone.

"Where is she from?"

The woman exhaled.

"She told me her name was Lily."

Everyone in the room became still.

"Where is she now?" Sarah asked.

Daniel looked at the child sitting across from him.

"She's with me."

The woman was silent.

Then her voice softened.

"Thank God."

Daniel frowned.

"Who are you?"

"I was Claire's neighbor."

The name changed the air again.

"I knew something was wrong when Claire stopped answering messages."

Daniel listened.

"She had been sick for a while."

His face tightened.

"Sick?"

Sarah hesitated.

"She didn't tell you?"

The question was quiet.

But it carried accusation.

Daniel looked away.

"No."

Sarah was silent for several seconds.

"She wanted to."

The words hurt more than he expected.

"Then why didn't she?"

"Because she was afraid."

"Of me?"

"No."

The answer came quickly.

"Of what your life would do to them."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The room disappeared for a moment.

Not because he wanted it to.

Because some truths were easier to hear when the world became distant.

May you like

"What happened to Claire?" he asked.

Sarah's voice lowered.
