Chương 3

This Ethan looked like someone who was exhausted from pretending those things still worked.

"I came in because I heard something downstairs," he said.

"And?"

"And nothing."

Mara glanced back at the empty space on the table.

"Something is missing."

Ethan did not move.

That was enough of an answer to make her chest tighten.

"You know what was there."

"I know what Ruth kept."

"That isn't what I asked."

He looked away.

The silence between them had changed over the last two days. Before, it had been the silence of two people who did not trust each other. Now it was worse.

It was the silence of two people who suspected they might need each other.

Mara folded her arms.

"Claire was here."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"She said she came to help."

"Do you believe that?"

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Mara studied him.

"You don't even have to think about it."

"Because I know my sister."

"Do you?"

The question landed harder than she intended.

Ethan looked at her.

Mara immediately regretted the sharpness in her voice, but she did not take it back.

For years, she had watched people in the Whitmore family avoid difficult truths by pretending they were being reasonable. Ruth had been the only person in that house who sometimes said the thing everyone else was afraid to say.

Now Ruth was gone.

And the envelope was gone with her.

"She asked about Ruth's papers yesterday," Ethan said quietly.

Mara turned.

"Claire?"

He nodded.

"What papers?"

"I don't know."

"That's convenient."

His face hardened.

"You think I took it?"

"I think you know more than you told me."

"Those are different things."

"Not always."

A car door slammed outside.

Both of them looked toward the front windows.

Neither moved.

The Whitmore mansion had always felt too large for the number of people living inside it. Every sound traveled. Every conversation seemed to belong to the walls as much as the people speaking.

Mara hated that she had started noticing things like that.

She hated that she had started feeling like the house itself was keeping secrets.

The front door opened before either of them reached it.

Claire Whitmore walked inside carrying a paper coffee cup and a folder pressed against her side.

She stopped when she saw them.

Her eyes moved from Ethan to Mara, then to the table behind them.

"You found it."

Mara felt the room change.

"What did you say?"

Claire's expression tightened.

"I said you found it."

"No."

Mara stepped closer.

"You said 'it' before you knew what we were talking about."

Claire looked at Ethan.

A tiny movement.

Almost nothing.

But Mara saw it.

"That's not what happened," Claire said.

"Then explain it."

Claire set the folder down slowly.

"I heard you two talking."

"You were outside the room?"

"No."

"Where were you?"

Claire opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

That hesitation was enough.

Ethan rubbed a hand over his face.

"Claire."

"Don't."

Her voice was quiet, but it carried.

"Not right now."

Mara noticed something she had not seen before.

Claire was nervous.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Nervous.

That did not make her innocent. Mara had learned long ago that frightened people could still lie.

But it made the situation more complicated.

"What was in the envelope?" Mara asked.

Claire looked at her.

"I don't know."

"You expected us to believe that?"

"I expected you to understand that I was trying to stop something worse from happening."

The words sat there.

Ethan straightened.

"What did you do?"

Claire looked at her brother.

"I moved it."

Mara felt a strange emptiness before the anger arrived.

"You moved Ruth's envelope."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Claire looked down.

"Because I found out someone else was looking for it."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"That's not good enough."

"I know."

The honesty of that answer interrupted Mara more than a lie would have.

Claire opened the folder she had brought.

Inside were photocopies.

Old documents.

Handwritten notes.

A photograph.

"I went through Ruth's things after she asked me to," Claire said.

Mara stared at her.

"Ruth asked you?"

Claire nodded.

"When?"

"Three weeks before she died."

The room became painfully quiet.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Claire laughed once, without humor.

"Because you would have done exactly what you always do."

"What does that mean?"

"You would have protected everyone except the person who needed protecting."

Ethan flinched.

Mara noticed.

She also noticed he did not argue.

Claire pulled out the photograph.

It showed Ruth standing beside a younger Ethan near the mansion's garden wall.

There was another person beside them.

Someone Mara did not recognize.

A man whose face had been partially covered by the edge of the picture.

"Who is that?" Mara asked.

Claire looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

"Then why bring it here?"

"Because Ruth wrote something on the back."

She turned it over.

Mara leaned closer.

Three words had been written in Ruth's handwriting.

Not a message.

Not a name.

A warning.

"Trust no Whitmore."

Ethan went completely still.

Mara looked at him.

For the first time since the envelope disappeared, she saw something she had not expected.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

"What does that mean?" Mara asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"Who is it?" Claire asked.

He did not respond.

Mara watched his fingers tighten around the phone.

"Unknown number."

The call continued.

Nobody moved.

Finally Ethan answered.

"Hello?"

At first there was only silence.

Then a voice.

Low.

Distorted.

"I know you found the envelope."

Ethan's expression drained.

Mara could hear the voice faintly through the speaker.

"Do not open what Ruth left behind."

The call ended.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Claire whispered something Mara almost did not hear.

"She was right."

Mara looked at her.

"Who was right?"

Claire picked up the photograph again, but her hands were shaking now.

"Ruth."

May you like

Outside, somewhere beyond the mansion walls, a car engine started.

Mara turned toward the window.
