Chương 12

Morales asked who lived in the house.

“Mommy and Daddy.”

“Anyone else?”

“Grandma comes.”

“Does Grandma sleep here?”

“Sometimes.”

Morales nodded.

“Did anyone put you in that kennel today?”

Lily looked at Melina.

Claire felt the child’s body tighten.

Morales said, “You can tell me with words or point.”

Lily pointed.

Melina looked away.

Morales asked, “Did Grandma say why?”

Lily whispered, “Because I was bad.”

Claire closed her eyes for one second.

Morales’s voice remained even.

“What did she say you did?”

“Ran.”

“Where were you trying to go?”

Lily looked toward the front of the house.

“To Aunt Sarah.”

Sarah’s face crumpled.

Claire looked at her.

“Why Sarah?”

Lily picked at a cracker.

“She said she would take me somewhere safe.”

Claire turned toward Sarah.

“You told her that?”

Sarah nodded carefully.

“I told her if she ever got scared, she could call me.”

“She’s four.”

“I know.”

“You told a four-year-old to run to you?”

“No.”

“I told her to use the tablet.”

Daniel shouted from across the yard.

“You told her to contact you behind my back.”

Becker said something to him.

Daniel lowered his voice.

Morales kept her attention on Lily.

“Did you try to use a tablet?”

Lily nodded.

“Where is it?”

“Grandma took it.”

Morales looked at Melina.

Melina’s face tightened.

“It was becoming an obsession.”

Claire’s anger returned.

“What did you do with it?”

“I put it away.”

“Where?”

Melina hesitated.

“The kitchen cabinet.”

Sarah suddenly said, “No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“I checked the kitchen.”

Melina stared at her.

“You searched the house?”

“I looked for Lily’s tablet.”

“You had no right.”

Sarah’s voice sharpened.

“I was trying to find evidence of what she had been telling me.”

Claire looked at Sarah.

“What had Lily been telling you?”

Sarah reached into her pocket.

“She sent me voice messages.”

Daniel crossed the yard.

“What?”

Becker followed him.

Sarah stepped back.

“Through the kids’ messaging app.”

“You told me you hadn’t heard from her directly.”

Sarah looked at him.

“I lied.”

Daniel laughed once.

“Unbelievable.”

Claire raised her voice.

“Everybody lied.”

The words stopped them.

Claire looked around the yard.

“My husband lied.”

She looked at Daniel.

“My sister lied.”

Sarah lowered her eyes.

“My mother-in-law lied.”

Melina’s jaw tightened.

“And apparently some woman lied her way into my house wearing my clothes.”

Claire looked at Morales.

“So I don’t care who feels offended anymore.”

Morales gave a small nod.

“Do you still have the messages?”

Sarah held up her phone.

“Yes.”

Daniel moved toward her.

Becker stepped between them.

“Sir.”

Daniel stopped.

Sarah unlocked the phone.

“There are five.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“What does she say?”

Sarah hesitated.

“Claire.”

“Play them.”

Sarah looked at Lily.

“Not in front of her.”

That was the first thing Sarah had said all afternoon that Claire trusted immediately.

Morales stood.

“I can listen with you separately.”

Claire looked down at Lily.

She did not want to leave her.

Ethan seemed to understand before she spoke.

“I can sit right here.”

Lily grabbed Claire.

“No.”

Claire kissed her forehead.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

She looked at Morales.

“Play it here quietly.”

Sarah lowered the volume.

The first message was mostly breathing.

Then Lily’s small voice whispered from the phone.

“Aunt Sarah, Daddy is mad again.”

Daniel looked as if someone had punched him a second time.

The recording continued.

“The other Mommy came.”

A pause.

“She says Mommy isn’t sick anymore.”

Claire’s skin prickled.

Then Lily whispered one more sentence.

“She says Mommy is never coming home.”

Claire felt Lily’s words settle over the yard like ash.

She looked at her daughter.

“Did the other Mommy tell you that?”

Lily nodded.

“When?”

“In your room.”

“Was Daddy there?”

Lily’s eyes moved toward Daniel.

“He came after.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Lily pressed closer to Claire.

“You yelled at her.”

“I yelled because I thought someone had broken into the house.”

Claire’s gaze sharpened.

“You spoke to her.”

“I spoke toward the bedroom.”

“That is not the same answer.”

“I never saw her face.”

Sarah held the phone against her chest.

Officer Morales looked at Daniel.

“What exactly did you say?”

Daniel rubbed his jaw.

“I told whoever was in there to get out.”

“And did someone answer?”

Daniel’s eyes dropped.

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“She said your name.”

Claire stopped breathing for a second.

“What did she say?”

“Just Claire.”

“In my voice?”

“No.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Almost.”

Becker’s radio crackled.

He turned away to answer it.

Morales remained still.

Claire watched Daniel’s face and saw something she had not seen all afternoon.

Shame.

Not fear of being caught.

Not anger.

Shame.

“What else happened?”

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“I went into the room.”

“Was she there?”

“No.”

“But?”

He looked toward the house.

“Your blue shirt was on the floor.”

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

The shirt.

The cloned voice.

The messages.

The blonde hair.

The necklace.

Someone had been building a version of her inside the house.

Not a perfect version.

Only one convincing enough for a tired child at night.

Sarah said, “The second message is worse.”

Claire opened her eyes.

“Play it.”

Sarah hesitated.

Claire nodded.

Sarah tapped the phone.

Lily’s recorded whisper came through.

“The lady says Grandma knows her.”

A rustling sound followed.

Then Lily spoke again.

“She says Daddy is going to make Mommy sleep forever.”

Daniel recoiled as though the accusation had physical force.

“No.”

Claire stared at him.

“I never said that.”

Lily’s current voice came small against Claire’s side.

“You said medicine makes Mommy sleep.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire understood.

A phrase overheard.

Moved somewhere else.

Made monstrous by a stranger.

Morales said, “We need to preserve these recordings.”

Sarah nodded.

“I haven’t deleted anything.”

Becker came back from the gate.

“Additional units are here.”

He looked at Daniel.

“We’re going to clear the residence.”

Daniel nodded.

May you like

Claire said, “The office safe is downstairs.”

Becker acknowledged her and left with two other officers.
