Chương 3

"Eventually."

"What?"

"A new power of attorney."

Franklin looked at the paper again.

"Did you sign?"

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"Why not?"

Robert gave a tired laugh.

"Because I told him I was not dead yet."

The sentence was almost funny.

Almost.

Franklin smiled briefly.

Then the expression disappeared.

"Where is the document now?"

"I don't know."

"Did Daniel leave a copy?"

"No."

"Did he say why he needed expanded authority?"

"He said it was temporary."

The word stayed in the room.

Temporary.

It was the kind of word people used when they wanted someone to accept something before understanding it.

Franklin opened a drawer and pulled out a yellow legal pad.

"I need you to tell me everything that happened after surgery."

Robert looked uncomfortable.

"Everything?"

"Everything you remember."

That was when I noticed something.

Robert was not afraid of the money.

Not really.

The money was just proof.

The deeper wound was that his family had started making decisions around him instead of with him.

He sat back in the chair.

"My surgery was supposed to be routine."

He looked at his hands.

"Then it wasn't."

He described the complications.

The second procedure.

The nights when nurses came in and out.

The medication that made him confused.

The moments when he woke up and saw Daniel sitting in the room.

"He brought paperwork one afternoon," Robert said.

Franklin's pen stopped.

"What paperwork?"

"I don't know."

"Why don't you know?"

"Because I was half asleep."

Robert swallowed.

"He told me it was just medical authorization."

My stomach tightened.

"Did you sign anything?"

Robert closed his eyes briefly.

"I signed one page."

Franklin leaned forward.

"What page?"

"I don't know."

Nobody spoke.

The room felt different.

The problem had changed.

This was no longer just about suspicious withdrawals.

There might be documents.

There might be signatures.

There might be a moment when Robert's weakness had been used against him.

Franklin reached for a folder.

"Do you have access to your patient records?"

Robert nodded.

"Through the hospital portal."

"Good."

He looked at me.

"Did you bring him directly here from the hospital?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Franklin looked back at Robert.

"Do not go home alone tonight."

Robert opened his mouth.

"I can handle—"

"No."

The lawyer's voice was calm but firm.

Robert stopped.

"I am not saying that because I think you are incapable."

Franklin lowered his voice.

"I am saying it because people who believe they are entitled to your decisions may react badly when they realize they no longer have control."

Robert stared at the desk.

For the first time since I picked him up, he looked old.

Not weak.

Old.

There was a difference.

A strong person can still become tired from carrying something too heavy for too long.

"I should have seen it," he said.

Franklin looked at him.

"What?"

"That something changed."

The lawyer said nothing.

Robert continued.

"After Linda died, Daniel stepped up."

His voice cracked slightly.

"I thought that meant he loved me."

The silence afterward was worse than any argument.

I looked down at my hands.

I thought about all the times I had seen Daniel at family gatherings.

The jokes.

The hand on Robert's shoulder.

The way he called him Dad in front of everyone.

I wondered how much of that had been real.

Franklin finally spoke.

"Robert, I need you to understand something."

Robert looked up.

"Trusting someone is not the same thing as being foolish."

The words seemed to land.

Not completely.

But enough.

Franklin gathered the papers.

"I want you to stay somewhere else tonight."

Robert sighed.

"My house is my house."

"I know."

"I should not have to leave."

"No."

Franklin nodded.

"You should not."

He paused.

"But being right does not always mean being safe."

Before Robert could answer, his phone began ringing.

The sound cut through the office.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

I already knew who it was before he said anything.

Daniel.

Robert let it ring.

The call ended.

Ten seconds later, it started again.

Franklin looked at him.

"Answer it."

Robert looked uncertain.

"Why?"

"Because we need to know what he thinks is happening."

Robert picked up the phone.

He pressed the speaker button.

"Hello?"

Daniel's voice filled the room.

"Dad."

There was relief in his tone.

Almost too much.

"Where are you?"

Robert looked at Franklin.

Then at me.

"I'm with Michael."

A pause.

A small pause.

But long enough.

"Michael?"

Daniel's voice changed.

"Why are you with him?"

Robert leaned back.

"Because he picked me up."

Another pause.

Then Daniel laughed softly.

Not naturally.

More like someone trying to recover control.

"Okay."

"I was worried."

Robert said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"Dad, we need to talk when you get home."

Franklin watched Robert closely.

"About what?"

Daniel exhaled.

"About some paperwork."

Robert's fingers tightened around the phone.

"What paperwork?"

This time the silence lasted longer.

Then Daniel said, "The paperwork we discussed."

And that was the moment Franklin reached over and quietly wrote three words on his legal pad.

Do not agree.

Do not explain.

Do not go home.

Robert stared at the words on Franklin's pad for a moment, then slowly nodded.

"Dad?" Daniel said through the phone.

Robert looked toward the window.

"I'm still here."

"Who are you talking to?"

The question came out too quickly.

Not concerned.

Not curious.

Controlling.

Robert noticed it too.

"I said I'm with Michael."

"Right."

Daniel's voice softened again.

"Of course."

A person who had nothing to hide would have asked if his father was okay.

A person who had nothing to hide might have said he was glad someone was helping.

Instead, Daniel sounded like someone trying to calculate what had changed.

"When are you coming home?" Daniel asked.

Robert looked at Franklin.

"I haven't decided."

The silence on the other end was immediate.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I haven't decided."

"Dad, you just got out of surgery."

"I know."

"You need your medication."

May you like

"I know."

"You need someone there."
