Chương 9
“Redbridge?”
“I can’t confirm specific allegations.”
“You just confirmed enough.”
Denise did not answer.
Claire looked down at the hospital blanket.
“What exactly was Evan’s role?”
“He participated in vendor relationship development.”
“I know his title.”
“Claire.”
“I’m asking whether he had influence over Redbridge contracts.”
A pause followed.
“He had influence over certain introductions and renewals.”
Claire’s mind began assembling fragments.
Redbridge.
Strategic partnerships.
Quarterly vendor review meetings.
A CFO complaint six months earlier about consultancy fees rising without corresponding project scope.
Evan had called the complaint political.
Claire had believed him.
“Who owns Redbridge?”
“I can’t discuss that.”
“Do you know?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
That answer landed harder than Claire expected.
“Is it someone connected to the Mercers?”
“I’m not answering that.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Denise, I need to know if my personal money ended up connected to something happening at Vantage Core.”
“I understand.”
“No, I don’t think you do.”
Her voice rose.
“My husband has access to my salary, my financial accounts, my identification, and apparently documents he never showed me.”
“Claire—”
“And now a company vendor appears in files tied to transfers from my money.”
Daniel shifted closer.
Claire turned away from him.
“I need to know whether I’m exposed.”
The silence on the other end changed.
Denise’s next words came carefully.
“That is exactly why outside counsel may want to speak with you.”
Claire felt cold.
“Outside counsel?”
“Yes.”
“For the company?”
“Yes.”
“That means Vantage Core thinks this may be bigger than HR.”
“I cannot characterize it.”
Claire almost snapped at her.
Then she remembered Marisol saying good evidence survived scrutiny.
Facts.
Not interpretation.
“What should I do with my company accounts?”
“Nothing.”
“Meaning?”
“Do not log in from personal devices.”
“I already stopped.”
“Good.”
“Do not delete anything?”
“Correct.”
“Do not contact Evan?”
“Correct.”
“Do not contact Redbridge?”
“Correct.”
“Anything else?”
Denise hesitated.
“Yes.”
Claire waited.
“Do not assume the company’s lawyers represent you.”
Claire’s grip tightened on the receiver.
That was the first sentence Denise had said that felt completely human.
“Thank you.”
“I mean that sincerely.”
“I know.”
After the call, Claire sat quietly.
Susan broke the silence first.
“What did she say?”
“Evan has been suspended.”
Daniel’s face changed immediately.
“Good.”
“No.”
He stared at her.
“Not good?”
“Not yet.”
Claire looked toward the window.
“If the company is investigating him, he’ll know something serious has changed.”
Susan understood.
“He’ll panic.”
“Maybe.”
Claire rubbed her thumb against the edge of the receiver.
“And panicked people erase things.”
At ten-ten, the elevator opened downstairs and Raymond Mercer entered the hospital alone.
Claire learned this from Keisha, who had become the unofficial distributor of carefully filtered information.
“He’s not with them,” Keisha said.
“Judith and Evan?”
“They left twenty minutes ago.”
“Why is Raymond here?”
“He says he wants to speak with you privately.”
Daniel stood immediately.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“Sit down.”
“Claire.”
“Dad.”
Susan caught Daniel’s sleeve and pulled gently.
He sat, but not happily.
Claire asked Keisha, “Did Raymond say why?”
“No.”
“Does he know Evan was suspended?”
“I have no idea.”
Claire thought of Raymond in the kitchen.
His lowered eyes.
His quiet objection.
Judith, this has gone far enough.
Then silence.
Dinner.
Brisket.
A bottle opening while Claire lay twenty feet away.
Her stomach turned.
“Tell him I’ll see him.”
Daniel stood again.
“No.”
Claire looked at Naomi, who had just returned.
“Can he come up with security nearby?”
“Yes.”
“Door open?”
“Yes.”
“Parents stay?”
“If you want.”
“I do.”
Daniel remained standing.
Claire pointed at the chair.
He sat.
Raymond entered twelve minutes later wearing gray slacks, a white shirt, and no jacket.
He looked smaller than Claire remembered.
Not physically.
Something about his posture had changed.
He stopped inside the doorway when he saw Daniel.
Daniel did not move.
Susan did.
She stood and positioned herself beside Claire’s bed.
Raymond swallowed.
“Hello, Claire.”
She stared at him.
“Why are you here?”
His eyes went to the brace around her leg.
Then away.
“I wanted to see how you were.”
“No.”
He blinked.
“No?”
“That isn’t why you’re here.”
Raymond glanced toward the open door.
A security officer stood twenty feet away at the nurses’ station.
Naomi remained near the wall.
Raymond rubbed one palm over the other.
“Evan was sent home from work.”
Claire said nothing.
“He says you called his company.”
“I called my company.”
Raymond flinched slightly.
Daniel noticed.
Claire did too.
“What do you want?” she asked.
Raymond lowered his voice.
“Judith is frightened.”
Claire almost laughed.
“She broke my leg.”
“I know.”
The room went still.
Claire stared at him.
“You know?”
Raymond’s mouth tightened.
“I mean I know you were injured.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“That isn’t what you said.”
Raymond glanced at Daniel again.
“Maybe this was a mistake.”
He stepped backward.
Claire’s pulse jumped.
“Did you see her hit me?”
Raymond stopped.
No one moved.
He looked toward the hallway.
Then back at Claire.
His face had gone pale.
“I saw enough.”
Daniel rose slowly.
Susan grabbed his wrist.
Claire did not look at either of them.
“How much is enough?”
Raymond swallowed.
“I saw the second strike.”
Claire felt every sound in the room disappear.
“The second?”
“Yes.”
“And the third?”
His eyes closed briefly.
“Yes.”
A pressure built behind Claire’s ribs.
“You told police you didn’t see it happen.”
Raymond looked at the floor.
“I was trying to keep this from becoming worse.”
“For whom?”
He did not answer.
Claire leaned forward as much as the bed allowed.
“You watched Judith break my leg.”
Raymond’s face crumpled, but Claire felt no pity.
“You watched Evan leave me there.”
“I told him to take you somewhere.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“I said he should handle it.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
The word came out barely audible.
Claire’s hands were shaking again.
“Why are you really here?”
Raymond looked toward the door one more time.
May you like
Then he reached inside his shirt pocket.
Security moved immediately.
