Chương 11

A character laughing.

The sound seemed obscene and necessary at the same time.

Nora continued.

“Warren told me we had to move cash temporarily so the lenders wouldn’t panic while the contracts were verified.”

Warren said, “That is a lie.”

“Then why did Ethan send me account instructions?”

“I have no idea what Ethan sent you.”

“You introduced us.”

“For compliance work.”

“You told me he could be trusted.”

“That does not make me responsible for every conversation you had afterward.”

Daniel watched Warren carefully.

The language was good.

Precise.

Defensible.

It answered responsibility instead of the accusation.

Daniel had paid him enormous amounts of money for exactly that skill.

Officer Reyes said, “I think we’re past the point where this room is the right place for these interviews.”

Warren nodded immediately.

“Finally.”

She looked at him.

“That was not reassurance.”

Then she turned to Nora.

“Ms. Nora, based on what you admitted regarding the drink, you are not free to leave.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Daniel felt Lily watching despite the headphones.

Reyes continued.

“You’ll be advised of your rights before any further custodial questioning.”

Nora nodded once.

She did not argue.

That frightened Daniel more than if she had.

Reyes looked at Warren.

“You are not being arrested at this time.”

Warren exhaled.

“But we will need your contact information, and I strongly recommend you do not destroy, alter, or dispose of anything potentially related to what has been discussed.”

“I know preservation obligations.”

“I assumed you did.”

The sentence was neutral.

Warren took it as an insult anyway.

Daniel barely noticed.

Nora stood when Reyes asked her to.

The younger officer approached with handcuffs.

Lily pulled off her headphones.

“No.”

Every adult looked toward her.

Nora’s face broke.

“Lily.”

The girl slid off the sofa.

Daniel moved before she could cross the room.

He caught her gently around the shoulders.

“They’re hurting her.”

“No, sweetheart.”

“Why are they putting those on?”

“Because she has to go with them.”

Nora looked at Reyes.

“Can I say goodbye to her?”

Daniel answered first.

“No.”

Nora flinched.

He hated himself for the speed of it.

Then he remembered the cup.

He remembered Lily saying Nora had told her to keep quiet.

His refusal remained.

Nora swallowed.

“Okay.”

She looked at Lily from across the room.

“I’m sorry you were scared.”

Daniel stiffened.

Nora did not add anything else.

No defense.

No request for forgiveness.

No explanation.

Reyes guided her toward the hallway.

As Nora passed the broken teacup, she looked down once.

Daniel expected shame.

Instead he saw something stranger.

Recognition.

He followed her gaze.

One porcelain fragment lay near the edge of the dried foam.

A tiny dark speck clung to its inside curve.

Nora stopped walking.

Reyes noticed.

“What?”

Nora stared at the fragment.

“That wasn’t me.”

Daniel’s skin prickled.

Reyes frowned.

“What wasn’t?”

Nora lifted her cuffed hands slightly toward the floor.

“That.”

Daniel looked again.

The dark speck was almost black against the white porcelain.

Nora’s face had gone pale.

“I put drops in the tea.”

She looked directly at Daniel.

“I didn’t put anything solid in the cup.”

Officer Reyes turned toward the floor but did not move closer to the fragment.

“What do you mean?”

Nora stared at the dark speck.

“I used liquid.”

Her voice had lost the panic that had colored nearly everything she had said for the last half hour.

Now she sounded precise.

Certain.

“The bottle Ethan gave me was clear liquid.”

Daniel looked at the evidence bag containing the blue bottle.

“And you’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t shake anything into the cup?”

“No.”

“You didn’t crush anything?”

“No.”

Reyes signaled to the crime scene technician.

“Photograph that fragment before touching it.”

The technician crouched carefully near the spill.

Daniel felt Lily press against him.

He put an arm around her without taking his eyes off the floor.

The dark speck was tiny.

It could have been tea leaf residue.

Burnt sugar.

Dust from the floor.

Anything.

Still, Nora had recognized its wrongness immediately.

That mattered.

Reyes asked, “Did the liquid you used have any color?”

“No.”

“Smell?”

“Not that I noticed.”

“Did you see it react after you added it?”

Nora hesitated.

“I didn’t stay long enough.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You didn’t watch me drink it.”

Nora closed her eyes.

“No.”

“Why?”

“I couldn’t.”

The answer irritated him.

He wanted facts, not guilt dressed as tenderness.

“You could put it in the cup, but you couldn’t watch?”

“I know how that sounds.”

“Do you?”

Nora looked at Lily.

Daniel shifted slightly so his daughter disappeared behind his shoulder.

Reyes interrupted.

“Mr. Mercer.”

He stopped.

The technician used tweezers to lift the fragment into a separate evidence container.

Another technician photographed the brown residue on the marble.

The room had become colder somehow.

Not physically.

The chandelier still cast the same warm light across the long table and abandoned plates.

But the house no longer felt like Daniel’s.

It felt borrowed by procedure.

Reyes turned to Nora.

“Did anyone else have access to the cup after you added the drops?”

Nora frowned.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Anyone in the room.”

“Be specific.”

Nora closed her eyes as if reconstructing the sequence.

“I poured the tea while Daniel was in the study with Warren.”

Warren immediately said, “He was not with me then.”

Nora looked at him.

“You came out two minutes before he did.”

“That doesn’t mean we were together.”

Daniel remembered.

He had gone to the study alone after their argument to retrieve the board packet.

Warren had followed him later.

They had spoken briefly in the hall outside the study.

Nora was wrong about the timing.

Reyes noticed Daniel’s expression.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Nora’s mistaken.”

Nora turned toward him.

“About what?”

“I wasn’t in the study with Warren when you poured the tea.”

She blinked.

“You came out together.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at Warren.

“He found me in the hall afterward.”

Warren nodded too quickly.

May you like

“Yes.”

Reyes looked at him.
