Chương 4

Emily smiled faintly.

"I work in a hospital."

"People think nurses have magical answers because we wear uniforms."

She looked toward the doorway.

"We mostly just learn how to stay when things are difficult."

That sentence stayed with Mara.

Not because it solved anything.

Because it sounded honest.

The next morning arrived without the dramatic change Mara had secretly expected.

There was no sudden feeling of freedom.

No moment where the fear disappeared.

A technician came in to take blood.

A doctor reviewed her scans.

A cleaning worker replaced the trash bag near the bathroom.

A man in the next room complained loudly about the television remote.

Life continued with its ordinary interruptions.

Mara found comfort in that.

The world was not demanding that she become a completely different person overnight.

It was allowing her to become someone else one small decision at a time.

The doctor explained that her recovery would take patience.

Her injuries were healing, but she needed physical therapy before she could safely return home.

The words home made her stomach tighten.

Because the apartment was not just a place.

It was where Daniel's clothes hung in the closet.

Where his shoes sat by the door.

Where his voice filled the rooms.

The doctor asked if she had support available.

Mara looked down at the blanket.

"I have people I can call."

It was not exactly an answer.

But it was the beginning of one.

Later that afternoon, Emily brought her phone charger from the counter where it had been left.

A small envelope was underneath it.

Mara recognized Daniel's handwriting immediately.

She stared at it for a long time.

"What is it?" Emily asked.

"I don't know."

Mara did not touch it.

The envelope had been placed carefully.

Not thrown.

Not hidden.

Just left there.

That almost made it harder.

Because Daniel was not a stranger.

That was the part nobody outside the relationship understood.

People wanted simple categories.

Good person.

Bad person.

Victim.

Villain.

But real life was messier.

Someone could remember your favorite meal and still make you afraid.

Someone could hold your hand in an emergency room and later use that same hand to control you.

Mara picked up the envelope.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

Inside was a printed copy of a document.

At first, she thought it was another hospital form.

Then she saw the heading.

It was a financial statement from their joint account.

She read the numbers slowly.

The amount was not what frightened her.

It was the note attached at the bottom.

Daniel had transferred several expenses into a separate account.

The message written beside it was short.

"I need space until you calm down."

Mara stared at the sentence.

Calm down.

The phrase felt like a door closing.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it sounded so reasonable.

That was how Daniel had always done it.

He rarely said things that sounded openly threatening.

He said things that made her question herself.

Emily noticed her expression.

"Bad news?"

Mara handed her the paper.

Emily read it carefully and returned it.

"This is something you should discuss with someone who can help you understand your options."

Mara nodded.

The old version of herself would have immediately called Daniel.

She would have apologized for upsetting him.

She would have asked what she needed to do to make things normal again.

Instead, she placed the paper on the table.

Then she opened the contact list on her phone.

The first person she called was not Daniel.

It was her older sister, Rachel.

The call rang six times before someone answered.

"Mara?"

Rachel's voice carried surprise and worry at the same time.

Mara closed her eyes.

She had not spoken to her sister in almost four months.

Not because they had fought.

Because Daniel had always found reasons their conversations became stressful.

"You sound like you were sleeping," Mara said.

Rachel laughed softly.

"That's because I was."

For a few seconds, they talked about nothing.

The weather.

Rachel's broken washing machine.

A neighbor's dog that barked every morning.

Small things.

Normal things.

Then Rachel asked the question neither of them wanted to avoid.

"What happened?"

Mara looked toward the hospital window.

She could see people walking in the parking lot below.

Families arriving.

Families leaving.

People carrying bags and coffee cups and flowers.

"I think I need help," she said.

There was silence.

Not the uncomfortable silence of judgment.

The silence of someone trying to understand the weight of those words.

"Okay," Rachel finally said.

Mara swallowed.

"Okay?"

"Yeah."

"I don't know what you need yet."

"But you called me."

Rachel's voice became softer.

"So we start there."

Mara pressed the phone against her ear.

A tear slipped down her face.

She quickly wiped it away, embarrassed even though nobody could see.

"I should have called sooner."

Rachel did not answer immediately.

When she did, her voice was careful.

"Maybe."

The honesty surprised Mara.

"But I'm more interested in what happens now."

After the call ended, Mara sat quietly.

She looked around the hospital room.

The white walls.

The bed rails.

The chair.

The equipment that had witnessed one of the worst moments of her life.

Nothing had changed physically.

But something inside the room felt different.

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door.

Mara looked up.

She expected Emily.

Instead, Daniel stood outside.

He was not inside the room.

He did not walk in.

He simply stood there with his hands in his jacket pockets.

For the first time, he looked unsure whether he belonged.

Mara did not invite him in.

Daniel noticed.

That was the first thing that changed.

He waited for permission that did not come.

"I just want to talk," he said.

Mara watched him through the doorway.

The old instinct to make things easier appeared immediately.

She felt it.

She did not follow it.

"I don't think that's a good idea right now."

May you like

Daniel looked down.

A small muscle moved in his jaw.
