Chương 7
"Maybe."
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Or maybe he knows me well enough to believe he did."
That possibility bothered him.
Because Michael's greatest advantage had never been information.
It had been familiarity.
He knew Daniel's habits.
His decisions.
His weaknesses.
He knew which buttons to push.
The missing file suddenly mattered more.
It was not just evidence.
It was a weapon designed specifically for Daniel.
A week later, the file appeared.
Not because the investigators found it.
Because Michael sent it.
There was no explanation.
No message.
Only an encrypted attachment delivered through an anonymous account.
The investigators opened it first.
Daniel and Claire waited in a conference room while the contents were reviewed.
The waiting was worse than knowing.
Claire tapped her fingers against the table.
Daniel noticed.
"You can stop."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"Doing that."
She looked down.
"I don't know I'm doing it."
"I know."
She stopped.
A few minutes later, the investigator entered.
His expression was serious.
That was enough to tell them the file mattered.
"There is information here that changes the situation."
Daniel sat straighter.
"What is it?"
The investigator placed a printed document on the table.
"It is a recording."
Claire looked at Daniel.
"Of what?"
The investigator hesitated.
"Of a conversation involving you."
Daniel looked down at the paper.
The date was from two years earlier.
Before Claire met Adrian.
Before the broken phone.
Before any of this began.
"Play it."
The recording started.
Static filled the room.
Then Michael's voice appeared.
"You are making this harder than it needs to be."
Daniel's own voice answered.
"I told you no."
Claire looked confused.
Daniel looked frozen.
He recognized the conversation.
But not the context.
Michael continued.
"You think you can walk away from this and nothing happens?"
Daniel's voice was sharper.
"I am not doing what you are asking."
The recording stopped briefly.
Then another voice appeared.
Adrian.
"Maybe he needs a reason."
Claire's face changed.
Daniel felt the same cold feeling he had experienced when he first saw her on the floor.
The recording continued.
Michael spoke again.
"Nobody gets hurt if everyone understands their position."
The investigator paused the audio.
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked at her father.
"What were they talking about?"
Daniel did not answer.
Because he did not know.
And for the first time since the investigation started, the missing piece was not about Claire.
It was about him.
"I don't remember this conversation," Daniel said.
The investigator watched him carefully.
"That is important."
Daniel looked up.
"Why?"
"Because the recording suggests there was a conflict before your daughter became involved."
Claire looked at the document again.
"With what?"
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
There was one possibility he had refused to consider.
A decision he had made years earlier.
A decision involving Michael.
A decision that had created enemies.
"I ended a partnership," Daniel said.
Claire looked at him.
"With who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"With Michael."
The room went silent.
"He wasn't always my advisor."
Claire listened.
"He was my partner."
The word carried weight.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at the recording.
"Money."
Claire waited.
"It was supposed to be a business disagreement."
He rubbed his hand across his face.
"But Michael thought I betrayed him."
The investigator leaned forward.
"Did he have a reason?"
Daniel looked down.
That question was harder than he expected.
"I made a decision without him."
Claire frowned.
"Why?"
Daniel stared at the table.
"Because I believed he was taking the company in a direction that would hurt people."
The answer changed something.
Not because it excused Michael.
Because it complicated the story.
Michael was not simply a stranger who wanted power.
He was someone who believed he had been wronged.
That did not make him right.
It made him more dangerous.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Claire asked.
Daniel looked at her.
"I thought it was over."
She nodded slowly.
"That seems to be something you say a lot."
The sentence hurt.
Not because it was cruel.
Because it was accurate.
Daniel accepted that.
The investigator gathered the documents.
"There is more."
Claire looked up.
"What more?"
"The file includes a list of future actions."
Daniel frowned.
"Future actions?"
The investigator nodded.
"Things Michael intended to do if you refused certain demands."
Daniel looked at the paper.
The first item was business related.
The second involved reputation.
The third involved family.
Claire saw his expression change.
"What does it say?"
Daniel did not answer.
He pushed the paper toward her.
She read it.
Then her face went pale.
Because beside the third item was her name.
And beneath it was a date.
The date was the day Adrian entered her life.
The date was circled in the document.
Not highlighted.
Not marked with a warning.
Just circled.
That small detail made it worse.
It meant someone had taken the time to look at it.
To choose it.
To decide that day mattered.
Claire stared at the page until the words blurred.
The room around her seemed distant.
The investigator spoke carefully.
"We need to understand the timeline."
Daniel did not move.
He was looking at the date.
The day Adrian first contacted Claire.
The day she thought was a coincidence.
The day she had told herself she was lucky to meet someone who seemed to understand her.
A memory came back.
Not dramatic.
Not obvious.
Just a simple conversation at dinner months earlier.
Michael sitting across from him.
Asking about Claire.
Not in a concerned way.
In a curious way.
Daniel had ignored it.
Because Michael had known her since she was a child.
Because trust had become a habit.
Because habits were sometimes the hardest things to question.
"Daniel," the investigator said.
He looked up.
"Did Michael know your daughter was vulnerable at that time?"
The question bothered him.
Not because he did not understand it.
Because he did.
"He knew she had just moved back."
"Why?"
Daniel looked down.
May you like
"Because I told him."
Claire looked at him.
