Chương 7

For several seconds, he only looked at his hands.
“When we were overseas, there was information about a weapons shipment.”
Maya listened.
“Information that should have been impossible to obtain.”
Harrison nodded.
“We discovered someone inside the operation was leaking details.”
Thomas continued.
“We were sent to identify the source.”
“And?”
Thomas looked at Harrison.
“We were wrong about someone.”
Harrison’s face tightened.
Maya waited.
“People got hurt.”
The words were simple.
The weight behind them was not.
“How many?”
Thomas did not answer.
That was an answer too.
Maya felt tears forming.
Not because she knew the details.
Because she finally understood why her father had carried so much silence.
He was not hiding because he did not trust her.
He was hiding because he did not know how to explain surviving something he believed he should not have survived.
A small cry came from Lily.
The moment broke.
Maya immediately adjusted the blanket.
The three adults looked toward the baby.
For a few seconds, nothing else mattered.
Thomas smiled faintly.
“She has good timing.”
Maya wiped her eyes.
“She gets that from me.”
Harrison smiled slightly.
The first genuine expression Maya had seen from him.
“She does.”
The normal moment lasted only a few seconds.
Then Thomas’s phone vibrated on the table.
He looked at the screen.
The color left his face.
Maya noticed.
“Who is it?”
Thomas did not answer.
The phone vibrated again.
Harrison saw the number.
His expression changed.
“No.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You know it?”
Harrison nodded slowly.
“That number shouldn’t exist.”
Maya reached for her father’s arm.
“What is happening?”
Thomas turned the phone toward them.
There was no name.
Only a message.
Three words.
I FOUND HER.
The room went silent.
Thomas stood immediately.
Not because he wanted to leave.
Because every instinct in him had just returned.
Maya watched the father she knew disappear beneath the man he had spent years trying to bury.
And for the first time, she understood that Marcus had never been the only person who had been hiding something from her.
Thomas did not move for several seconds.
The phone remained in his hand, the message glowing against the dark screen.
I FOUND HER.
Maya watched his face carefully.
She had spent years learning the expressions of other people.
Marcus’s fake concern.
Marcus’s irritation hidden behind politeness.
Marcus’s confidence when he thought he was winning.
But her father was different.
Thomas did not hide emotions because he was trying to manipulate anyone.
He hid them because he believed carrying pain quietly was a form of kindness.
Now that silence was failing him.
“Dad.”
He looked at her.
The fear was still there.
“Yes?”
“Who is she?”
Thomas looked away.
That small movement answered more than words.
Maya’s heart sank.
“Dad.”
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Not here.”
Her expression hardened.
“No.”
The firmness surprised him.
“No more.”
Thomas stared at his daughter.
She was exhausted.
She had given birth less than two days ago.
She was holding a newborn and dealing with a man who had controlled her life.
She should have been protected from more problems.
But she was done being protected from the truth.
“I need to know what’s happening,” she said.
Thomas looked at Lily.
Then at Maya.
A long silence passed.
Finally, he sat down.
“Her name is Elena.”
Maya waited.
“She was part of the operation.”
Harrison’s face changed.
“She survived?”
Thomas looked at him.
“You thought she didn’t?”
Harrison looked down.
“I thought everyone involved was accounted for.”
“That was the report.”
The way Thomas said report made Maya notice something.
Not belief.
Not trust.
Something colder.
A memory of being told something and knowing it was wrong.
“What happened to her?”
Thomas rubbed his hands together.
“She was blamed.”
“By who?”
Thomas did not answer immediately.
“By people who needed someone to blame.”
Harrison swallowed.
“And Daniel found her.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Apparently.”
Maya looked between them.
“Why does someone finding Elena matter?”
Nobody answered.
She felt the frustration rising.
“Why does everyone in my life know pieces of the story except me?”
Thomas looked at her.
“You’re right.”
The words stopped her.
She expected another explanation.
Another reason.
Another promise that he was doing this for her.
Instead, he admitted it.
“I should have told you.”
Maya looked down at Lily.
The baby’s eyes remained closed.
“She was involved with what happened to you?”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
“Was she dangerous?”
Thomas paused.
That pause mattered.
“I don’t know.”
Maya looked at him.
“You don’t know?”
“I know what I saw.”
He looked toward the window.
“I don’t know everything that happened after.”
Harrison stepped closer.
“Thomas.”
“No.”
Thomas’s voice was firm.
“You don’t get to edit this anymore.”
Harrison stopped.
The accusation landed.
Maya noticed something then.
Her father was not only angry at Marcus.
He was angry at years of people controlling information around him.
“Tell her everything you can.”
Harrison looked uncomfortable.
Then he nodded.
“The operation went wrong because someone provided false intelligence.”
Maya listened.
“We were sent to intercept a shipment.”
Thomas continued.
“But the information was designed to put us in the wrong place.”
Harrison looked at the floor.
“People died.”
Maya’s throat tightened.
“And Elena?”
“She was the one who discovered the mistake,” Thomas said.
“She tried to warn us.”
Harrison looked at him.
“And we didn’t listen fast enough.”
The sentence carried regret.
Not the kind people performed.
The kind they carried.
Maya looked at the two men.
For years, she had imagined her father’s past as something distant.
A chapter before her.
Something that ended when he came home.
Now she understood that people did not leave things behind simply because they stopped talking about them.
Some things followed quietly.
They sat at dinner tables.
They waited in hospital rooms.
They appeared when a phone screen lit up.
Thomas looked at the message again.
“We need to leave.”
May you like
Maya immediately tightened her arms around Lily.
The movement was automatic.
