Chương 8

A car passing.

A place that did not feel like home.

"Daniel, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"The story you were given about yourself was designed to make you stop asking questions."

Daniel looked down.

"And Lily?"

"She wasn't supposed to be connected to you."

His stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone made a mistake."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

Daniel stood again.

His patience was gone.

His fear was stronger.

"Where did you find Lily?"

Another silence.

Then Evan said something that made Daniel stop.

"I didn't find Lily."

"What?"

"She found me."

Daniel looked toward the hallway again.

The house felt different.

Every room seemed to contain a conversation he had missed.

"Explain."

"She was looking for someone."

"Who?"

Evan's voice dropped.

"Her mother."

Daniel felt the air leave him.

"Lily's mother is dead."

"That's what the records say."

Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying the records were changed."

A floorboard creaked outside the bedroom.

Daniel turned.

Mara stood in the doorway.

She had clearly heard enough to know something was wrong.

Her face asked the question before her mouth did.

Who is it?

Daniel held up one finger.

Not yet.

Evan continued.

"Is Mara there?"

Daniel froze.

"How do you know she's here?"

"Because she always was."

The answer disturbed him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you need to ask her about the week before the adoption."

Daniel looked at Mara.

Her expression changed when she heard that.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But Daniel saw it.

"Evan."

"I have to go."

"No."

Daniel walked toward the door.

"You don't get to do that again."

"Daniel."

"No."

His voice cracked.

"You disappear for eleven years and call me with another mystery and then leave?"

"I'm trying to keep you alive."

"Then stop hiding."

The silence returned.

When Evan spoke again, his voice was almost a whisper.

"I wasn't hiding from you."

Daniel waited.

"I was hiding because of you."

The call ended.

Daniel stood still.

The phone remained against his ear even after the line went dead.

Mara watched him.

"What did he say?"

Daniel lowered the phone slowly.

"He knows about Lily."

Mara's face changed.

"How?"

"He said you need to tell me about the week before the adoption."

She looked away.

That was enough.

Daniel felt something inside him collapse.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Mara did not answer.

"Mara."

She walked past him into the bedroom.

Not leaving.

Not avoiding.

Preparing.

That was worse.

"What happened?" Daniel asked.

She sat on the edge of the bed.

For several seconds, she stared at her hands.

"When we were matched with Lily, the agency gave us a caseworker."

Daniel waited.

"Her name was Rachel."

"Okay."

"Rachel quit two weeks later."

"Why?"

"She said she couldn't continue working on Lily's case."

Daniel frowned.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought it was about the paperwork."

"Why?"

"Because she told me not to worry."

Daniel stared.

"Mara."

"I know."

She looked up.

"I should have told you."

The words were different from excuses.

They were heavier.

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of losing Lily."

Daniel sat across from her.

"Explain."

Mara took a breath.

"Rachel told me there were problems with Lily's file."

"What kind of problems?"

"She said someone had been accessing records that they shouldn't have had access to."

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"Who?"

"She didn't know."

"Did she mention Evan?"

Mara hesitated.

"Not at first."

The hesitation answered before the words did.

"When?"

"After she quit."

Daniel stared.

"What happened?"

Mara looked toward the hallway where Lily was sitting.

"Rachel came to our house."

"When?"

"Three days before we finalized the adoption."

Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.

"What did she say?"

Mara swallowed.

"She said if we loved Lily, we should stop asking questions."

Daniel stood.

"Why?"

"Because some questions don't just hurt the person asking them."

The sentence sounded exactly like something Evan would say.

Daniel looked toward the bedroom window.

Outside, the street was still ordinary.

People walked.

Cars moved.

Neighbors lived their lives.

And inside his house, the past had finally caught up with him.

"Where is Rachel now?" he asked.

Mara shook her head.

"I don't know."

Daniel looked at her.

"You never looked?"

"I tried."

"And?"

"She disappeared."

Daniel laughed quietly.

Another person gone.

Another missing piece.

Another person who knew something and vanished before telling the truth.

Mara reached for his hand.

He almost pulled away.

Almost.

But he didn't.

"I was scared," she said.

Daniel looked at her.

"I know."

The words surprised him.

Because he meant them.

Not as forgiveness.

Not yet.

Just understanding.

They sat there for a moment.

Then Lily appeared at the doorway.

Her eyes moved between them.

"Is Uncle Evan angry?"

Daniel looked at her.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"Then why did he leave?"

Daniel looked down.

Because that was the question he had been asking for eleven years.

Now he finally understood that maybe leaving was not always the same thing as abandoning someone.

"I don't know," Daniel said.

Then he stopped.

He almost repeated the same mistake.

He looked at Lily.

"But I think he was trying to protect someone."

"Me?"

Daniel nodded.

Lily was quiet.

Then she asked the question that made both adults look at her.

"Can we find him before they do?"

Daniel looked at Lily for a long moment.

The question was simple.

The answer was not.

He wanted to tell her yes.

He wanted to promise they would find Evan before anyone could hurt him.

He wanted to make the world feel safe again with a sentence.

But he had learned something that morning.

Promises were dangerous when they came too easily.

"We're going to try," he said.

Lily studied his face.

"That's not the same as yes."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

He sat beside her.

May you like

"But it's the truth."

She seemed to accept that more than a false promise.
