Chương 6

Not everything had been a lie.
That was what made betrayal difficult.
People rarely destroyed something that had never mattered.
She placed the photograph back into the envelope.
Then she heard footsteps.
Ethan stood at the bedroom door.
He did not enter.
For the first time in years, he waited.
“What do you want?” Claire asked.
His eyes moved around the room.
“I didn’t know about the ownership document.”
She looked at him.
“That’s what you came to say?”
“No.”
He hesitated.
“I mean… yes, but not only that.”
She waited.
The silence made him uncomfortable.
“I made mistakes.”
Claire looked down.
That sentence was almost impressive in how little it admitted.
“Which ones?”
He looked at her.
“I’m trying to fix this.”
“You’re trying to save yourself.”
His face tightened.
“Maybe both.”
It was the closest thing to honesty she had heard from him all night.
And somehow that made it worse.
Because part of her had spent years waiting for him to say something real.
Now that he finally did, it came only after everything collapsed.
A phone buzzed downstairs.
Then another.
Then another.
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
Claire noticed his expression.
“What now?”
He did not answer.
But she saw it.
The fear returned.
Something else had happened.
Something outside the house.
Something he could not control.
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
Claire noticed his expression.
“What now?”
He did not answer.
But she saw it.
The fear returned.
Something else had happened.
Something outside the house.
Something he could not control.
She followed him downstairs.
Not because she wanted to help him.
Not because she trusted him.
Because after everything that had happened, she refused to let another part of the truth unfold somewhere she could not see.
When they reached the kitchen, Ethan’s phone was still vibrating on the counter.
The screen showed several notifications.
Patricia glanced at it.
“What is happening?”
Ethan picked up the phone.
His face became pale.
Claire watched him read the messages without moving.
“What did you do?” Patricia asked.
He looked at her sharply.
“Nothing.”
The answer came too quickly.
Vanessa shook her head.
“You always say that.”
Ethan ignored her.
He opened another message.
Then another.
The confidence he had spent the evening trying to rebuild disappeared completely.
Claire stepped closer.
“What is it?”
Ethan locked the screen.
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
She almost laughed.
The phrase was so familiar.
It belonged to the years before.
The years when he believed hiding information was the same as protecting someone.
“Then why do you look terrified?”
He did not respond.
Patricia moved closer.
“Ethan.”
Her voice carried a warning.
Not concern.
Not anymore.
She wanted the truth because she had finally realized the truth affected her too.
He rubbed his hand over his face.
“My business partner found out.”
Claire studied him.
“About what?”
Another pause.
That pause answered more than words.
“The money,” Vanessa said quietly.
Ethan looked at her.
“How do you know?”
Vanessa looked toward the folder.
“Because I didn’t find everything by accident.”
Claire looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa hesitated.
For the first time since she entered the house, she seemed unsure whether to continue.
“I hired someone to look into him.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“You investigated me?”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You disappeared for three days after I told you Noah was sick.”
Her voice remained controlled.
“I had a child and no answers.”
She looked away.
“I needed to know if I was waiting for someone who was ever coming back.”
Claire felt a strange shift.
Not forgiveness.
Not acceptance.
But understanding.
Everyone around Ethan had been forced into a position where they had to search for reality because he refused to offer it.
“What did you find?” Claire asked.
Vanessa looked at the folder.
“Not everything.”
She glanced at Ethan.
“Enough.”
The word bothered him.
Enough.
Not all the details.
Not every secret.
Just enough to prove the story he told himself was collapsing.
Claire pulled out a chair and sat down.
The exhaustion finally caught up with her.
Nobody commented on it.
That small mercy meant more than she expected.
Ethan remained standing.
“I can explain.”
Claire looked at him.
“Then explain.”
He hesitated.
Again.
Always the hesitation.
“I invested in a project.”
“What project?”
“A company acquisition.”
“Which company?”
He looked away.
Claire noticed.
“You don’t remember the name?”
“I know the name.”
“Then say it.”
His jaw tightened.
“Westbridge.”
Patricia frowned.
“I thought Westbridge was successful.”
“It was supposed to be.”
The words were quiet.
Claire looked at the documents.
“And it failed.”
Ethan did not answer.
She understood.
“You lost money.”
“I lost an investment.”
“You lost our money.”
His face hardened.
“I was going to fix it.”
The sentence sounded rehearsed.
Claire had heard versions of it before.
People who caused damage often believed the intention to repair erased the damage itself.
“How?”
Ethan looked at her.
“I had a plan.”
“What plan?”
No answer.
She waited.
The silence became uncomfortable.
Finally, he said, “The house.”
Claire felt something inside her go cold.
“What about the house?”
Ethan looked at the ownership document.
“It was supposed to be collateral.”
Patricia stepped back.
“What?”
Claire stared at him.
The room felt smaller.
“You were going to use my house.”
“Our house.”
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“You already told me it was yours.”
Ethan looked frustrated.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“It is exactly what you meant.”
Vanessa looked at him with disbelief.
“You were going to risk the place where Claire lives?”
Ethan looked at her.
“I was trying to protect my future.”
The sentence was so honest that everyone became silent.
Because there it was.
Not an accident.
Not confusion.
Not one bad decision.
A choice.
He had chosen his future over everyone else’s safety.
Claire looked down at her hands.
May you like
She remembered every time Ethan had told her not to worry about finances.
Every time he had said he had everything under control.
