Chương 13

He looked at her.
“The detectives identified the account she was messaging.”
Adrian stood again.
“Who was it?”
Ruiz glanced toward Olivia.
“I’d prefer not to discuss that in front of her.”
Olivia’s face hardened instantly.
“No.”
Adrian looked at Ruiz.
“She stays.”
Ruiz hesitated.
Then he nodded.
“The account belongs to someone Mrs. Mercer knows.”
Clara felt her pulse climbing.
“Who?”
Ruiz answered carefully.
“Her brother.”
Adrian stared at him.
“Vanessa doesn’t have a brother.”
Ruiz’s face remained still.
“She does.”
The silence that followed felt different from all the others.
Not shock.
Rearrangement.
Adrian slowly shook his head.
“No.”
Ruiz continued.
“His name is Daniel Shaw.”
Clara had never heard it.
Adrian had.
She saw that immediately.
His face lost color.
“Daniel Shaw is dead.”
Ruiz watched him.
“No, Mr. Mercer.”
Adrian sat down hard.
“He is not.”
Adrian stared at Ruiz as though the officer had switched languages.
“My wife told me he died when she was nineteen.”
Ruiz nodded once.
“That appears to be what she told several people.”
“Appears?”
“We located Daniel Shaw through the account records and confirmed his identity.”
“Where is he?”
“Pennsylvania.”
“Doing what?”
“That’s not relevant yet.”
Adrian laughed once without humor.
“My wife nearly sent our baby down a staircase while planning to blame an employee, and the man helping her is a brother she told me was dead.”
He pressed both palms against his thighs.
“I think relevance has moved.”
Ruiz allowed the anger to pass.
“Detectives spoke with Mr. Shaw tonight.”
Clara felt Olivia’s fingers tighten around her sleeve.
“What did he say?” Adrian asked.
“He claims he believed Vanessa wanted to frighten Clara into quitting.”
Adrian’s eyes went to Clara.
Ruiz continued.
“He denies knowing a child would actually be placed in danger.”
“Do you believe him?”
“That’s not my decision.”
“Did he tell her how to do it?”
“He gave her suggestions for creating circumstances that could make an employee appear negligent.”
Clara felt something hot and ugly rise in her chest.
“Suggestions.”
Ruiz looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Like disabling my access card?”
“That is one possibility investigators are examining.”
“Moving the camera?”
“Yes.”
“Leaving Emma alone while I was locked outside?”
“We don’t yet know whether he was involved in that incident.”
Clara turned her face away.
The distinction mattered legally.
Emotionally, it did nothing.
Olivia asked, “Why did Mom say he was dead?”
No one answered.
Ruiz crouched slightly.
“We don’t know.”
Adrian looked at his daughter.
“I should.”
“You don’t.”
“No.”
He did not defend himself.
Olivia seemed disappointed anyway.
Ruiz’s phone buzzed again.
He glanced at it.
“Mr. Mercer, a detective will contact you tonight about arranging a formal interview tomorrow.”
“I’ll be there.”
“Your attorney can attend.”
“He will.”
Ruiz looked toward Clara.
“You too, Ms. Bennett.”
Clara nodded.
“And I strongly recommend you stay somewhere other than your apartment until we know whether anyone besides Mrs. Mercer and Mr. Shaw has your address.”
Adrian did not look at her.
That helped.
Clara said, “I’ll stay with Marisol.”
Marisol blinked.
“You will?”
“If the invitation exists.”
“It does now.”
Olivia exhaled.
Adrian looked relieved but wisely said nothing.
Ruiz left them with instructions that felt both excessive and inadequate.
Do not contact Vanessa.
Do not contact Daniel Shaw.
Do not delete messages.
Do not post publicly.
Call if anyone unfamiliar appeared at the house, hospital, or Clara’s apartment.
By midnight, Rachel arrived carrying an overnight bag, a phone charger, and the furious expression of a woman who had spent ninety miles imagining everything she would say and then forgotten all of it when she saw Olivia.
She dropped the bag.
Olivia ran into her.
Rachel held her so tightly that the girl squeaked.
“Too much?”
“A little.”
Rachel loosened her arms without letting go.
Then she looked at Adrian.
He started to speak.
She lifted one finger.
“Not yet.”
Adrian nodded.
Rachel looked at Clara’s brace.
“You look terrible.”
“Thank you.”
“I mean injured.”
“I preferred the first version.”
Rachel’s mouth twitched.
Then she saw the bandages on Clara’s hands, and the humor disappeared.
“I heard what you did.”
Clara looked toward Olivia.
“Don’t.”
Rachel understood.
She did not turn it into praise.
“Okay.”
Emma remained under observation until morning.
The doctors found bruising along one side of her torso but no fractures, head injury, or internal bleeding.
When Clara was finally allowed to see her, Emma was asleep in a hospital crib with a pulse-oximeter light glowing red against one tiny foot.
Adrian stood by the window.
Clara approached carefully on crutches.
She rested two fingers against the crib rail.
Emma stirred.
Her face scrunched.
Clara froze.
Then the baby settled again.
Adrian whispered, “She’s going to be okay.”
Clara looked at him.
“Don’t say it like a promise.”
He nodded.
“The doctors are optimistic.”
“That’s better.”
They stood there without speaking.
Morning light had begun turning the parking garage outside the window gray.
Adrian looked exhausted enough to collapse.
Clara probably did too.
“She told me Daniel died in a car accident,” he said.
Clara did not ask why he was telling her.
“Early in our marriage.”
He rubbed his eyes.
“She said they were close and that she couldn’t talk about it.”
“Did you ever meet her family?”
“Her mother twice.”
“Father?”
“Gone before we met.”
“Did her mother confirm Daniel was dead?”
“No.”
Clara looked at him.
Adrian gave a bitter smile.
“There were a lot of things I accepted because pushing felt cruel.”
Clara stared at Emma.
“Sometimes pushing is cruel.”
“Yes.”
“Sometimes not pushing is easier.”
He looked at her.
“That too.”
The investigation lasted months.
There was no clean moment when chaos became order.
There were interviews, subpoenas, forensic reports, attorneys, child-welfare meetings, and arguments over who could enter which house.

Vanessa was released after several days under conditions that prohibited contact with the children and Clara.
Adrian moved with Olivia and Emma into Rachel’s townhouse while the mansion was searched and its electronic systems examined.
