Chương 6

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“I was depressed,” she said quietly.

Everyone looked over.

She held Lily’s hand while she spoke.

“I had postpartum depression after Lily was born.”

The room became still.

“I didn’t understand what was happening to me.”

She looked at her daughter.

“I loved you.”

Her voice cracked.

“I loved you so much that it scared me how badly I was failing.”

Lily listened without moving.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Emily continued.

“I stopped sleeping.”

“I stopped eating properly.”

“I started thinking everyone would be better without me.”

James lowered his gaze.

He had known parts of this.

Not all of it.

“I asked for help,” Emily said.

“Some people helped.”

She looked at Ryan.

“And some people decided they knew what was best.”

Ryan flinched.

“I never wanted to take Lily away from you.”

Emily’s voice stayed calm.

“That’s not what happened.”

Ryan finally looked at her.

“I was trying to give you time.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“You were trying to make decisions without me.”

The accusation was not loud.

That made it heavier.

Ryan opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because he knew there was truth in it.

“I filed for temporary custody because I was scared,” he said.

James looked surprised.

“When?”

“After the hospital stay.”

Emily nodded slowly.

“I knew about that.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you fight it?”

The question carried years of confusion.

Emily looked down at Lily’s hand.

“Because I was not okay.”

Nobody spoke.

“I thought if I fought while I was falling apart, I would prove him right.”

Her eyes moved toward Ryan.

“I thought everyone would believe I was unstable.”

Ryan’s face changed.

Not because he had learned something new.

Because he had remembered something he had chosen not to think about.

The legal papers.

The conversations.

The moments where Emily had looked exhausted and afraid.

He had told himself those moments proved he was right.

He had never asked what they cost her.

“So you just disappeared?” James asked gently.

Emily nodded.

“For a while.”

The honesty surprised everyone.

“I went to treatment.”

Lily looked at her.

“What is treatment?”

Emily squeezed her hand.

“It’s when someone helps you get better.”

“Were you sick?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

“But I got help.”

Lily looked confused.

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

Emily took a breath.

Because that was the question that mattered most.

“I tried.”

She looked toward Ryan.

“I called.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“I changed my number.”

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at him sharply.

“You changed your number?”

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“It was complicated.”

Emily laughed softly.

There was no humor in it.

“Everything was complicated when it came to me.”

Ryan looked away.

James felt something settle in his stomach.

Not certainty.

Not yet.

But suspicion.

A story that had seemed simple had started collecting details that did not fit.

“I had messages,” Emily said.

“Emails.”

“Letters.”

“I tried through family.”

Ryan interrupted.

“Because I thought you needed space.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was firmer now.

“You thought you needed control.”

The words stayed in the room.

Ryan did not answer.

The police officer returned from the hallway.

“Mr. Carter.”

Ryan turned.

“We need to talk about next steps.”

He nodded.

The officer glanced toward Lily.

“Child services may need to follow up.”

Ryan’s expression changed.

That was the first consequence he truly feared.

Not people being angry.

Not losing the wedding.

Not losing Vanessa.

The possibility that someone official would examine the life he had built.

A life where he had always been the responsible parent.

“I understand,” he said.

The officer gave a small nod.

“I know this is difficult.”

Ryan almost smiled.

Difficult was not the word.

Difficult was a delayed flight.

Difficult was a broken appliance.

This was watching the identity you built around yourself begin to disappear.

When the officers walked away again, Ryan remained still.

Vanessa stood.

Everyone expected her to walk away.

Maybe even Ryan expected it.

Instead, she approached slowly.

“I need to ask you something.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Did you ever intend to tell me?”

His silence answered before he could.

Vanessa nodded.

A painful understanding crossed her face.

“I’m not asking if you had reasons.”

She looked toward Lily.

“I’m asking if you planned to let me marry you without knowing.”

Ryan whispered her name.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Don’t say my name like that fixes it.”

Her voice softened.

“I loved you.”

The word hurt him more than anger would have.

“I loved the person I thought you were.”

Ryan looked down.

Vanessa removed her engagement ring slowly.

The movement was not dramatic.

It was careful.

Like she was afraid of what the sound of it leaving her finger might mean.

She placed it on the table beside the flowers.

“I need time.”

Ryan nodded.

He did not argue.

For once, he did not try to control the outcome.

Near the other side of the room, Lily rested against Emily’s shoulder.

She was exhausted.

The kind of exhaustion that came from carrying feelings too large for a child.

James watched them quietly.

He knew the next days would be difficult.

There would be questions.

There would be paperwork.

There would be people choosing sides.

There would be moments where the truth became messier instead of clearer.

But for the first time in years, Lily was no longer living inside a story written by someone else.

And that was the first thing Ryan could not take back.

“I’ll tell you everything.”

The sentence sounded different this time.

Not like a promise made to protect himself.

Like a decision to finally stop protecting himself.

Vanessa sat across from him at the kitchen table where they had planned their first holiday dinner together only a few months earlier.

The place settings were still in the cabinet.

The expensive plates she had registered for were still untouched.

Small reminders of a future that had existed only until the truth arrived.
