Chương 3

“You came here tonight because you knew something was in that bag,” Dominic said.

Lucian looked away.

That was the first honest answer he had given.

Margaret slowly stood.

Dominic reached toward her, but she waved him off.

“I can stand.”

The words were quiet.

The meaning was not.

She was tired of being treated like someone fragile.

“I spent thirty years being told to stay out of things because I was a woman, because I was emotional, because I did not understand business.”

She looked at Lucian.

“Funny thing is, people who say those things usually do not want you to understand because they are afraid you will.”

Nobody interrupted her.

Dominic had heard his mother speak about ordinary things for years.

Groceries.

Weather.

Neighbors.

Recipes.

She was not a woman who liked confrontation.

That was why seeing her choose it now mattered.

“I found those documents three months ago,” she continued.

Dominic turned toward her.

“Three months?”

A small shadow crossed her face.

“I did not know what to do.”

“You could have called me.”

“I almost did.”

The answer hurt.

“Almost?”

Margaret looked down.

“You were already carrying enough.”

Dominic laughed once, without humor.

“That was your decision to make?”

Her lips pressed together.

There it was.

The old wound between them.

Not betrayal.

Not lack of love.

Something quieter.

Two people who loved each other but kept making choices for the other person because they were afraid of causing pain.

“I watched you become your father’s opposite and his reflection at the same time,” Margaret said.

Dominic looked away.

The sentence stayed with him.

“You built an empire because you never wanted to be powerless again.”

“That’s not a crime.”

“No.”

She softened.

“But it can become one if you stop noticing what you are becoming.”

The room felt smaller.

Even Lucian stopped pretending not to listen.

Dominic had spent years accepting criticism from enemies.

He knew how to ignore it.

His mother was different.

Her words reached places other people could not.

Valeria crossed her arms.

“This is exactly why I wanted to keep this from you.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Keep what from me?”

She hesitated.

That hesitation changed something.

“What did you know?”

Valeria looked toward Lucian.

He gave a warning look.

She ignored it.

“I knew your father kept records.”

“Everyone knew he kept records.”

“Not like these.”

Dominic waited.

Valeria exhaled slowly.

“When your father died, there were people who wanted those records destroyed.”

“Who?”

She looked at the bodyguards.

Then at the employees still cleaning the floor.

The question was not who was listening.

The question was who had already been listening for years.

“I don’t know all of them.”

“That’s not good enough.”

“I know.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You think everyone gets to walk around with perfect information because you have always been the person people call when things get ugly?”

Dominic stared at her.

Valeria looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not innocent.

Exhausted.

“I spent years cleaning up after men who thought they were too powerful to fall,” she said.

Lucian looked at her.

“You should stop talking.”

She turned toward him.

“No.”

The single word surprised him.

“I should have stopped years ago.”

The mansion became quiet again.

Dominic noticed Margaret watching Valeria carefully.

Not with trust.

With recognition.

Like she had seen this moment coming.

“What happened after my father died?” Dominic asked.

Valeria looked at the floor.

“The company nearly collapsed.”

“That was never reported.”

“Of course not.”

She gave a small, tired laugh.

“Your family was very good at making disasters look like strategy.”

Lucian stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you are saying.”

“I know exactly what I am saying.”

The confidence in her voice disappeared almost immediately after she said it.

That told Dominic more than the words.

She was afraid.

But she was afraid of Lucian, not him.

Dominic reached into his jacket and pulled out the letter.

“What is this really about?”

Nobody answered.

He unfolded the page again.

The handwriting looked older than the paper.

His father had always written slowly.

Dominic remembered seeing him sign birthday cards without ever adding personal messages.

Just his name.

A signature.

A responsibility completed.

But this letter was different.

There was emotion in it.

Not warmth.

Not affection.

Fear.

His father had been afraid.

That was something Dominic never expected.

The man who built companies, negotiated deals, and controlled entire rooms had written like someone trapped.

A sound came from the hallway.

One of the younger security guards appeared at the entrance.

“Mr. Vale.”

Dominic looked up.

The guard hesitated.

“What?”

“There are reporters outside.”

Lucian’s expression changed instantly.

“What reporters?”

The guard swallowed.

“They heard there was an incident.”

Dominic looked toward the shattered wine display.

A broken bottle.

A bruised man.

An elderly woman on the floor.

A child crying.

There was no way this stayed inside the mansion.

Lucian ran a hand over his face.

“This is exactly what I was trying to prevent.”

Dominic looked at him.

“No.”

He folded the letter.

“This is exactly what you were trying to hide.”

Lucian’s jaw tightened.

For a moment, Dominic saw the old version of himself.

The younger man who thought power meant never allowing anyone to see weakness.

The difference was that Dominic had spent years learning how much that belief had cost him.

Lucian had not learned yet.

“We need to talk privately,” Lucian said.

Dominic almost laughed.

“You attacked my mother in front of everyone.”

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

“I made a mistake.”

The admission was so unexpected that nobody reacted immediately.

Dominic studied him.

There was no apology.

Only calculation.

“I made a mistake because I underestimated how far you would go,” Lucian continued.

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“You made a mistake because you thought nobody would remember who you were when nobody was watching.”

Lucian looked away.

For once, he had no immediate response.

Outside, voices grew louder.

Cameras flashed through the windows.
