Chương 7

“You both keep talking like I am not standing here.”

Neither man answered.

That was the moment I stopped feeling like a person caught between two powerful men.

I became angry.

“I am not a piece of property you two are fighting over.”

My voice echoed slightly in the room.

Both of them looked at me.

Good.

They should have.

“My marriage is falling apart.”

“My children are in intensive care.”

“My insurance is being challenged.”

“And somehow I am still the last person who gets told anything.”

Ethan opened his mouth.

I lifted my hand.

“Do not.”

He stopped.

I had never done that before.

Not with him.

Not once.

For years, I had waited for Ethan to finish speaking because I believed his words carried more weight.

Now I realized I had simply trained myself to stay quiet.

“I want the truth.”

Ethan looked away.

Adrian looked at him.

Neither spoke.

So I waited.

Silence had always been Ethan’s weapon.

I was tired of letting it work.

Finally, he sat down.

“I did not want you involved.”

I stared at him.

“Involved in what?”

He rubbed his hands together.

A nervous habit I had not seen in years.

“You were pregnant.”

“That does not answer me.”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“It does not.”

He looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I almost laughed.

The sentence was so familiar.

People always said they were protecting someone when the truth was they were protecting themselves from consequences.

“You do not get to decide what hurts me,” I said.

Ethan looked at me.

“I know.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You are saying the right words.”

His face tightened.

“But I do not believe you mean them yet.”

That hurt him.

I could tell.

And a small, ugly part of me felt satisfied.

I hated that part.

I hated that betrayal could make someone want another person to hurt.

“I made mistakes,” Ethan said.

“Everyone says that after they are caught.”

“I was under pressure.”

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The excuse.”

He stood abruptly.

“I am not making excuses.”

“Then stop explaining why you did it.”

The room went quiet again.

Because neither of us knew what to do with that.

Adrian finally spoke.

“Ethan.”

One word.

A warning.

Ethan looked at him.

“Do not.”

Adrian did not react.

“You need to tell her.”

“Not from you.”

“Then from who?”

Ethan stared at him.

The question landed harder than any accusation.

Because there was no good answer.

I looked at Ethan.

“What were you hiding?”

He stayed silent.

Then he said something I did not expect.

“My company was being investigated.”

I frowned.

“By who?”

“Internal auditors first.”

“And then?”

He looked at Adrian.

“Outside investigators.”

The room seemed to tilt slightly.

“For what?”

Ethan sat back down.

“Financial irregularities.”

The words were carefully chosen.

Too carefully.

“What does that mean?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“It means money moved where it was not supposed to.”

I stared at him.

“And you thought the best solution was to divorce me?”

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

“I thought the best solution was to separate you from it.”

“What does that even mean?”

He looked at his hands.

“My company benefits covered your medical care.”

I already knew that.

“If investigators froze company assets, I did not know what would happen.”

“So you removed me.”

“I was trying to make sure you were not attached to the company.”

“By leaving me without a home?”

His face changed.

“I did not think that would happen.”

The anger that rose inside me surprised even me.

“You did not think?”

The monitors beside me continued their steady rhythm.

Three tiny heartbeats.

Three reminders that my life was no longer only about me.

“You signed papers.”

“Yes.”

“You moved money.”

“Yes.”

“You froze my account.”

“I was trying to separate finances.”

“You abandoned me.”

His eyes closed.

“I know.”

I looked away.

The worst part was that he finally sounded like he understood.

But understanding after destruction did not rebuild anything.

It only explained the wreckage.

Adrian moved toward the door.

“I should leave.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

Both men looked surprised.

I surprised myself too.

“I want everyone here.”

Because I was done letting information pass through other people.

Adrian nodded once.

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

Good.

He should.

“Who started the investigation?” I asked.

Ethan hesitated.

“I do not know.”

Adrian gave him a look.

“You know.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“I have suspicions.”

“About who?”

He looked at Adrian.

There it was again.

That invisible conversation between them.

Years of history.

Old anger.

Old guilt.

Finally, Ethan said, “Adrian.”

I looked at him.

“You think he did it?”

“I think he had access.”

Adrian laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was painful.

“After everything?”

Ethan stood.

“You disappeared for three years.”

“And you rebuilt the company using information I created.”

“You left.”

“Because you forced me out.”

“You always tell that version.”

“And you always tell yours.”

Their voices rose.

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“Stop.”

They stopped.

Both of them.

Again, I noticed it.

They listened when I spoke.

Not because I had power.

Because they finally remembered I was there.

“Three years,” I said.

I looked at Adrian.

“You said you were partners.”

“We were.”

“What happened?”

Neither answered immediately.

Then Adrian said, “I found evidence that Ethan had moved company funds without approval.”

Ethan looked at him.

“That is not what happened.”

“Then explain.”

“I was protecting the company.”

“With money that was not yours?”

Ethan’s face tightened.

“I was fixing a problem.”

“And you created a bigger one.”

I looked between them.

“Why did you not go to the authorities?”

Adrian went quiet.

That silence bothered me.

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because I was not sure.”

“Not sure about what?”

“Whether Ethan was stealing.”

The honesty surprised me.

“He was my friend.”

May you like

The word came out quietly.

“I wanted another explanation.”
