Chương 7

"There is something we need to talk about."

The little girl looked at him.

"Is it about the people who hurt us?"

Daniel was surprised by how much she understood.

"Yes."

She nodded.

"But you found me."

Daniel smiled softly.

"Yes, I did."

Claire sat across from them, holding the documents Richard had given Daniel.

She looked different.

Not because the years had changed her appearance.

Because she no longer carried the burden of protecting a secret alone.

"I owe you both the truth," Claire said.

Daniel listened.

His daughter reached for his hand.

The small gesture reminded him to stay calm.

"After I took her away, I spent years trying to find someone I could trust," Claire began.

"I knew Richard was dangerous, but I did not understand how far he would go."

Daniel looked at the papers.

"And then you found someone."

Claire nodded.

"Someone who promised to help us."

Her voice became quieter.

"But that person was working with him."

Daniel's expression tightened.

"Who?"

Claire looked down.

"The person who helped me disappear."

A heavy silence filled the room.

Daniel already knew the answer before she said it.

"Your sister."

The words landed harder than he expected.

Daniel leaned back slowly.

His sister Emily had been the person he called when his daughter disappeared.

She had been the person who sat beside him during the investigation.

She had been the person who told him to accept that some things could not be changed.

"No," Daniel whispered.

Claire looked at him sadly.

"I wish it was not true."

His daughter looked between them.

"Is she bad?"

Daniel looked at the child.

He knew she deserved honesty.

But she also deserved protection.

"Sometimes people do bad things because they make terrible choices."

The girl thought about that.

"Can people change?"

Daniel looked at Claire.

Then at the documents.

"I hope they can."

Later that afternoon, Daniel went to his sister's house.

He did not take security.

He did not take anger with him.

He took the truth.

Emily opened the door and froze when she saw him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then she looked past him.

"Is she here?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"You already know."

Emily closed her eyes.

A single tear fell down her face.

"I knew this day would come."

Daniel stepped inside.

The house felt exactly as he remembered.

Family photographs.

Old memories.

A place that once felt safe.

Now every corner felt like a question.

"Why?"

Emily looked away.

"Because I was afraid."

Daniel shook his head.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

His voice remained controlled.

"But fear does not explain ten years."

Emily sat down.

"I thought I was protecting you."

Daniel stared at her.

"By helping them take my daughter?"

Emily covered her face.

"No."

She looked up.

"I thought if I helped Richard, he would leave you alone."

Daniel was silent.

"He threatened me too."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

Emily nodded.

"He told me if I refused, he would destroy everything."

Daniel walked closer.

"You should have told me."

Emily laughed sadly.

"Would you have believed me?"

The question hurt because he did not know the answer.

Ten years ago, he had trusted Richard completely.

He had trusted his own family.

Maybe that was why the betrayal hurt so much.

"I would have tried."

Emily looked down.

"I know."

Daniel noticed something on the table.

An old photograph.

It showed him, Emily, and his daughter together before everything changed.

Daniel picked it up.

"We were happy."

Emily nodded.

"I remember."

"Then why did you let them take that away?"

Emily's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I thought I could fix it later."

Daniel looked at her.

"Later never came."

She nodded.

"I know."

The silence between them was different from before.

Not empty.

Heavy.

Filled with everything they could never undo.

"I need to know one thing," Daniel said.

Emily looked at him.

"Did my daughter ever know I was looking for her?"

Emily hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel was surprised.

"How?"

"Because Claire told her."

Emily swallowed.

"She showed her newspaper articles about you."

Daniel looked away.

His daughter had known about him.

She had grown up with a missing piece of her heart, just like he had.

"What did she think?"

Emily whispered.

"She thought you forgot her."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain of those words was almost unbearable.

But then he remembered her smile.

Her trust.

The way she had called him Dad.

He knew he had a chance to rewrite that belief.

When Daniel returned home that evening, his daughter ran toward him.

She stopped when she saw his face.

"Did something happen?"

Daniel knelt down.

"Some things are complicated."

She looked at him carefully.

"Are you sad?"

Daniel nodded.

"A little."

She hugged him.

"You don't have to be sad alone anymore."

Daniel held her tightly.

Those words were simple.

But they healed something inside him.

For years, he had carried the pain alone.

Now he had someone who reminded him he did not have to.

That night, Daniel sat in his daughter's room while she showed him drawings she had made over the years.

Some were pictures of imaginary houses.

Some were pictures of families.

One drawing caught his attention.

It showed a little girl standing between two homes.

Daniel looked at it quietly.

"When did you draw this?"

She shrugged.

"Long ago."

"What does it mean?"

She looked at the picture.

"I thought maybe I had two lives."

Daniel felt his heart tighten.

"Do you still think that?"

She shook her head.

"No."

She smiled.

"Now I think I have one."

Daniel smiled through tears.

Outside, the city continued moving as if nothing had changed.

But inside that house, something broken was finally beginning to heal.

The lies had been uncovered.

The people responsible had been found.

May you like

But Daniel knew their journey was not only about finding who took his daughter.

It was about helping her understand that she had always been loved.
