Chương 7

“I have done bad things.”
“Yes.”
Camila did not soften it.
“That does not make you a monster.”
She placed the glass down.
“But you spent years believing being a good provider was the same as being a good person.”
Julian looked away.
“I thought I was protecting what mattered.”
“You were protecting yourself from feeling helpless.”
The accuracy bothered him.
He had spent his entire adult life avoiding helplessness.
Money.
Influence.
Planning.
Control.
They were not just tools.
They were walls.
“What happens now?” Camila asked.
Julian was quiet.
“I do not know.”
She studied him.
“That answer is new.”
He gave a small, tired smile.
“It is becoming my most common one.”
For the first time in weeks, Camila laughed.
Not happily.
Not sadly.
Just honestly.
“I never thought I would say this, but maybe that is progress.”
They sat in silence afterward.
The relationship between them did not end with betrayal or anger.
It ended with the uncomfortable understanding that they had both been holding onto something that was never fully real.
Camila had fallen for the version of Julian who seemed untouchable.
Julian had leaned toward Camila because she belonged to the world where he felt powerful.
Neither of them had asked what remained when the image disappeared.
Meanwhile, Elena’s pregnancy continued to make everyday life more difficult.
She tried to hide how tired she was.
She still arrived early.
Still completed her assignments.
Still apologized when she needed to sit down for a few minutes.
That bothered Julian more than he admitted.
He saw how quickly she apologized for existing.
He wondered how many times in the past he had made her feel like an inconvenience without realizing it.
One afternoon, he arrived at the hotel and found her arguing quietly with a manager near the employee entrance.
Not an angry argument.
A tired one.
“I can finish the shift,” Elena said.
The manager shook his head.
“You nearly fainted yesterday.”
“I was standing too long.”
“That is not a normal problem to have at work.”
Julian stopped nearby.
The manager noticed him.
“Mr. Rossi.”
Elena immediately looked uncomfortable.
“Please do not.”
Julian understood.
She did not want him using his position.
Not even for her.
“I am not here as the owner,” he said.
The manager looked uncertain.
“Then why are you here?”
Julian looked at Elena.
“To listen.”
The answer sounded strange.
Even to him.
The manager glanced between them.
Then he sighed.
“Ms. Rossi is one of our hardest workers.”
Elena looked down.
“But she keeps refusing adjustments because she thinks asking for help will create problems.”
Julian looked at Elena.
She did not argue.
That was enough.
The manager nodded and walked away.
Elena waited until he was gone.
“You should not have done that.”
“I did not do anything.”
“You changed the conversation just by being here.”
Julian accepted that.
“You are right.”
She looked surprised.
“I am?”
“Yes.”
He leaned against the wall.
“I keep thinking showing up is enough.”
The honesty caught her attention.
“And?”
“And maybe sometimes showing up creates more pressure.”
Elena looked at him for a long moment.
“That is the first time you have said that.”
“I am trying.”
“I know.”
The words were quiet.
Not forgiveness.
But recognition.
That evening, Julian asked Elena if he could attend the next doctor appointment.
She hesitated.
“The appointment is about the baby.”
“I know.”
“Not about us.”
“I know.”
She studied his face.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I am trying to remember it.”
The honesty made her look away.
Finally, she nodded.
“Okay.”
The appointment was two days later.
Julian arrived ten minutes early.
Elena arrived three minutes late because traffic was worse than expected.
The old Julian would have been irritated.
This Julian stood when he saw her and asked if she was okay.
The doctor spoke calmly.
The baby was healthy.
The pregnancy was progressing normally.
There were still concerns about Elena’s exhaustion and stress levels.
Julian listened carefully.
He did not interrupt.
He did not ask about schedules or work.
He did not try to negotiate with medical advice.
He simply listened.
Afterward, they sat in the parking lot.
Neither moved to start the car.
The silence was different now.
Less like distance.
More like two people trying to understand a language they had forgotten.
“I missed this,” Elena said suddenly.
Julian looked at her.
“What?”
She looked through the windshield.
“Being able to sit with you without fighting.”
His chest tightened.
“I missed it too.”
She nodded.
Then her expression changed.
“But missing something does not mean it can come back.”
Julian looked down.
“I know.”
And this time, he truly did.
Because love was not a memory.
It was not a feeling that could erase damage.
It was something that had to survive choices.
Outside the car, people walked through the parking lot carrying groceries, talking on phones, living ordinary lives.
Nobody knew who they were.
Nobody cared about their past.
For once, that felt like a gift.
Three weeks passed before Elena allowed Julian to enter her apartment without a specific reason.
It was not a dramatic invitation.
There was no apology waiting behind the door.
No conversation prepared in advance.
She simply texted him one afternoon and asked if he could help move a small bookshelf away from the wall because she could no longer lift it safely.
Julian arrived with a toolbox and no expectations.
That was the difference now.
He no longer walked into rooms believing he knew what should happen next.
The apartment was quiet when Elena opened the door.
She wore a loose sweater over her pregnancy clothes, and her hair was still damp from a shower.
For a second, Julian saw the woman he remembered from years earlier.
Not because she looked the same.
She did not.
But because the tired expression on her face briefly disappeared.
“Come in,” she said.
He stepped inside.
May you like
The apartment was warm and simple.
A small lamp glowed beside the couch.
